So, I've made two friends fight (see comments of my big contest-post), I've made people go berserk from the waiting, but now we're there. The following ten albums are the best of this year, in my humble, but very advising opinion. If you haven't heard any of them, you should keep on listening Britney Spears. 10. Chad Vangaalen - Soft Airplane ( Sub Pop Records ) Sounds like: someone at a concert told me Neil Young, [...]

I recently had a chance to talk to Lost Highway recording artist Johnny Flynn when he came through Seattle on his tour (which also featured ingenue Laura Marling ) . Listen to what this Shakespearian scholar, poet, and songwriter had to say about his 2008 release, A Larum , Superman outfits, and Levon Helm . --Renata Sadunas [...]

Gig Of The Week 1: Underage Club @ Scala Oh, to be young again! Under 18 special featuring some of 2008's best artists, and some great picks for the coming year. Headlining are the excellent White Lies, who have to be the favourite in the recent BBC Sound of 2009 longlist. Backing them are the immense Metronomy, currently riding high in the cumulative Best of 2008 charts. Also on the bill are the great live act Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, whilst the eclectic mix is topped off with Rolo Tomassi. Head down to Scala [...]

Ten to go; here are the next five; this section of the list probably contain some of my most unique picks: Johnny Flynn - A Larum A Shakespearean actor and poet, Johnny Flynn brings an "olde fashioned" folk style to his debut album, A Larum . He and his band, The Sussex Wit, show remarkable maturity throughout the eclectic set of 14 songs, using guitars, strings, horns, and keys to help give life to Flynn's witty yarns. Sometimes lighthearted, other times wistful [...]

It's the end of the year, and sure as eggs is eggs there are music lists, polls and debates galore. I'm a sucker for a good end-of-year list, so I'm sure as hell gonna contribute my own. So without further ado, here are my top ten albums of the year: 10. Does It Offend You, Yeah? - You Have No Idea What You're Getting Yourself Into A triumph of genre crossovers, from [...]

40. Department Of Eagles - Teenagers (from In Ear Park ) 39. The Acorn - Crooked Legs (from Glory Hope Mountain ) 38. The Black Keys - Lies (from Attack & Release ) 37. Colour Revolt - Naked & Red (from Plunder, Beg And Curse ) 36. Wolf Parade - Language City (from [...]

I know this is almost a whole month early, but there's all sorts of reasons for getting my list out early. December is the time when everyone begins to take stock of the year's achievements and gets all nostalgic about the blue remembered hills of the past twelve months, so there's a more receptive audience for this kind of post. Plus, when January comes around it'll be time to look forward to the bright and promising future, so nostalgia is officially banned. It's also nearly Christmas, and lists like this one are an easy way to decide on presents for [...]

British singer/songwriter Johnny Flynn has turned in what has to be one of the best Americana albums of 2008 with his record 'A Larum.' Here is the song that I am currently playing into oblivion. Johnny Flynn -'The Wrote & The Writ' MP3

Johnny Flynn and the Sussex Wit : Leftovers [ purchase ] A taste, ironically, of what is to come... Leftovers is what I want Don't need no fine cuisine Give me a dime for bacon rind Or slip me some of that old sardine... I was introduced to London-based Johnny Flynn via two geographically disparate music blogs: the ever-excellent UK-based Song, By Toad , which covers the best of the new and burgeoning britfolk movement, and [...]
Filter just released their Top Ten Albums of 2008 List, so I thought I'd pass it on to see what everyone thinks. As for myself, I don't really get why everyone's getting all excited about MGMT (they're not bad, they're just not THAT good), but Fleet Foxes, TV On The Radio, and Bon Iver will make my top 10 this year. Thoughts? Filter Top 10 Albums of The Year : 1. MGMT , Oracular Spectacular (Columbia) 2. [...]

Since this monthly post tends to turn into a run on sentence of sorts, I'll try not to be too overtly blabby but get right to the point as much as I can. No promises (a leopard can't change his spots after all) but my concert going activities can be lumped into two categories: the shows that I probably will see and the shows that I probably won't see. Nothing is ever definite either way, but here goes: I've decided that I'm going to be making The Sadies my one regular yearly go-to. The reasons for [...]

From Sam Amidon's All Is Well and Fleet Foxes' Ragged Wood , so far, 2008 has been an amazing year for folk music! And it continues to shine as I discovered yet another wonderful folk record— A Larum by Johnny Flynn. The record is fantastic right from the get-go: "The Box", a song about Rob the homeless man sets up Flynn's entertaining narratives and characters evident throughout A Larum . The up tempo melodies and gorgeous fiddlings are more than pleasing to the ears. Flynn's grave voice, brass sections, shouting of "I'm alright!/I'm alright!", tipping, [...]

Preface: I walk into the climbing gym at 6am yesterday morning and Betsy immediately tells me of an artist I MUST look up. "Somebody Finn or Flynn that played at the bowling alley venue in Denver a bit ago." Hmmm. I get into work and Catherine emails a link to Johnny Flynn , who is her "new obsession" and a "worthy" artist for The Mountain Tempo . (She must have no standards.) I'm no detective, but each lass shares a common denominator...a certain Sara [...]
Johnny Flynn hails from South London, and has just released his debut album, A Larum , which I'd highly suggest you check out. The record is a good mix of some foot-stomping, arm-swinging acoustic chanties and some more traditional folk-balladry, all adding up to what I think is a rather sing-along-able folk album. He draws heavily on traditional instruments and arrangements - making good use of fiddles, banjos, and all other stringed folk staples. But his real draw for me is his hardy singing voice - the kind you'd expect to hear in an old [...]
