And here we are at the end of 2011. If you had told us a year ago that the things which transpired this year were coming, we would not have believed you. While for much of the year, and much to our frustration, music had to take a back seat to real life, that only increased its importance to this writer. Cross-country flights soundtracked by Broken Shoulder . Getting up to speed mornings listening to Rival Schools . Quiet weekends with J Mascis , summer vacation with Algernon Cadwallader and The War On Drugs [...]

Well, rock fans, it was a really strange year, one in which we personally and professionally -- and, yes, even to a certain extent here on the blog -- accomplished a great many big things. And all the ups and downs -- transcendent live sets on local stages, solitary post-midnight walks across frozen parking lots in the midwest -- had their soundtrack. Below are our picks for the 10 best songs of the year. These, as usual, are largely determined by our raw ITunes playcounts, although we also gave a little more weight to recent releases that would have been [...]

[* We accidentally deleted this post from late December; here it is in all of its glory once more. -- Ed.] Well, rock fans, it was a really strange year, one in which we personally and professionally -- and, yes, even to a certain extent here on the blog -- accomplished a great many big things. And all the ups and downs -- transcendent live sets on local stages, solitary post-midnight walks across frozen parking lots in the midwest -- had their soundtrack. Here are a few MP3s of songs from some of the better albums released this week. Johnny Foreigner – "200x" from Johnny Foreigner vs Everything. Norse Horse – "Moonbeams" from Grids [EP]. The Roots – "Make My" feat. Big K.R.I.T. from Undun. Continue reading…

With the launch of 'Johnny Foreigner Vs Everything' (review here ), Johnny Foreigner decided to put on two parties. Billed as VsLondon and VsBirmingham, their label Alcopop! put together a showcase like no other with a billing which could make most other indie labels a little jealous. For one night only, VsLondon comes to the upstairs venue of The Garage in London and it promises to be a good one. Arriving just in time to catch Screaming Maldini , I'm promised that [...]
Johnny Foreigner – Johnny Foreigner vs Everything. Download "200x" (mp3). Download "(Don't) Show Us Your Fangs" (mp3). This punk trio from Birmingham, England, has released their latest album, a 17-song set of diverse punk. Johnny Foreigner can sound like Los Campesinos!, Lemuria, or something completely different. Some songs are bashing punk. On other tracks, they bring it down a bit and offer an affectionate sentiment. Throughout the whole album – with songs barely over a minute in length or exceeding six minutes – the music is distinct, varied, and damn good.

Johnny Foreigner vs. Birmingham vs. The Dismemberment Plan. Live at The Flapper. Nov. 13, 2011. Epic.
When I first listened to Sunbears!, I thought I somehow managed to get lost on my drive home and ended up in the '70s - as you do when it's raining and the visibility is low. I can't say I've been lucky enough to experience the '70s before, but I think these guys wish they
In their own words, 'Johnny Foreigner Vs Everything' is "exactly as perfect/imperfect as we are" and "if it fails IRL, then it does so as proof we just aren't good enough". Safe to say there's a lot riding on this. For all intensive purposes, Johnny Foreigner have been a nearly band. Recognition surrounding their first album 'Waited Up Til It was Light' never gained them the recognition it deserved, and their weaker second album 'Grace and the Bigger Picture' would have threatened them with obscurity had it not been for the commitment of their [...]

Spoiler Alert: The chorus of "You vs. Everything" comes back, and when it does it's the greatest moment of the greatest song of the greatest album of the year. In a just world, the song would roll under the credits of dozens of feature-length teen dramedies by the middle of the decade. Or soundtrack montages of the young and the jilted, ditching soul-killing jobs, driving too fast in cars, smashing mailboxes, dreaming big dreams and proceeding with the business of Getting Over It And Getting On With It. In fact, the entirety of Johnny Foreigner 's captivating third LP [...]
