Before I dig into the actual music, can we just acknowledge that collaboration is awesome? 3 labels across two continents ( La Station Radar , Antelier Ciseaux and Hands in the Dark ) are joining forces to release a split tape between Johnny Hawaii and Cough Cool. The tape is the first release for France's Johnny Hawaii, and a victory lap for Cough Cool after his full length debut last year. The two are an easy fit together as both artists play a similar brand of shoegaze influenced lo-fi. Cough Cool is louder, tighter and more distorted, [...]

We're starting the new year off nicely with a very intriguing new co-release from Atelier Ciseaux, La Station Radar, and Hands In The Dark Records. A split joint between Philly based lo-fi shoegazers Cough Cool, and the surf psych sounds of Marseille's Johnny Hawaii. It is available, as of today, in a very limited edition of 100 tapes. You can pick it up HERE . For its part, Cough Cool is an apple that hasn't fallen too far from the JAMC/MBV/Spacemen 3 family tree. Equal parts white [...]
Today Hands In The Dark (Records) hit me up with their first tape release, a split between Philadelphia's Cough Cool and Marseille's Johnny Hawaii . It's also a co-release with Atelier Ciseaux and La Station Radar, available tomorrow January 3. Limited edition of 100 tapes. Dan Svizeny aka Cough Cool is a two-sided sheet. On one hand he makes (super) soft shoegaze and on the other he builds extreme heavy sound collages. In his own words "downercore bedroom-pop nuggets pulled from the ether of teenage memories and adult disappointments. Slow moving song mantras. Itchy frustration and [...]

With Lately , Cough Cool 's Dan Svizeny only recently delivered a perfect example of post-internet slacker shoegaze, but the dude just won't stop, casually dropping another collection of mellow, fuzzed-out sound collages with his new split with Marseille's own distorted surf exponent Johnny Hawaii . Below, take an exclusive look at the appropriately drugged, psych-leaning visualization of "Disney Again", yet another perfectly unwinding piece of hazy pop melancholia. The split tape will be released tomorrow, January 3, jointly via French quality imprints La Station Radar , Atelier Ciseaux [...]
The most information we can glean about the enigmatic Johnny Hawaii is that he doesn't hail from the Aloha State, but from Marseilles, in the south of France. His music ploughs a vaguely similar furrow to his fellow otherworldly Gallic exoticists, High Wolf and Cankun . Coincidentally, both of these artists have put out material on the excellent (and also French) Hands In The Dark label, who are co-releasing this track as part of a split tape with Philadelphia's Cough Cool . "Jesus words on a surimi stick" conjures up a sultry [...]

Who: Johnny Hawaii What: Laid back surfer pop, brought to us by Bad Panda Records Where: From Marseille, France, not often the origin of Hawaii-infused surfer tunes. Why: Because Johnny Hawaii knows exactly how to bring the sounds of the beach, somehow. With the first few notes of "The Lonely Smurfer", I can close my eyes and seriously feel like I'm on a sandy beach, sun shining, a warm breeze on the air, nothing but the sounds of [...]

The Stallcast you ask? Yes indeed the Stallcast, because my brain is still stuck in neutral after the Christmas break and seems annoyingly resistant to being asked to function properly at the moment. I've had half a week back 'at work', if I can really call it that, and I still feel like the the old grey custard is still spluttering a bit, rather than firing on all cylinders. The playlist reflects this in many way too, because it's a bit all over the place. Good tunes though, although I suspect those amongst you with Haircuts might not [...]

Johnny Hawaii - The Lonely Smurfer I find this to be right up my alley. Off an EP called "Smurf's Up" released just 3 days ago. Full of looped textured ooo's and ahhs with a tropical backing beet with a slow surf influenced verbed out guitar. Also, the cover art below really is making a play to be my favorite. Still holding on to summer as a chill in the air develops here in the DC Metro Area. "Get at bandcamp and hit the beach." via unholyrhythms : [...]
