Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers: Born To Lose [ purchase ] Johnny Thunders: You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory [ purchase ] Johnny Thunders may have had a junkie's appetite for self-destruction and few figures in rock history have certainly done less with more. Hell, in terms of pure work ethic, Gram Parsons looks good by comparison. But, make no mistake, Thunders was a monster talent and is absolutely essential in the "godfather of punk [...]

Johnny Thunders Hurtin (from the You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory single) (Real Records) Let's see what we got in the b-side bag today. Ooh look. It's something old. Not just old, no, this is oldskool . Yeah, that's right. Oldskool punk Johnny Thunders rompstomps down his New Yorkan sidewalk with this b-side Hurtin . This one comes off the more iconic punk ballad single, if you can ever call anything a punk ballad, called You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory . [...]
No no no, not that cancer. The astrological sign. Today's my birthday so we're going to celebrate all the bitchin' musicians who share it with me. Firstly, my personal favorite: Johnny Thunders. And while part of me feels like I should post "You Can't Put Your Arms Around a Memory" , you're getting "Personality Crisis" by The New York Dolls 'cause it fuckin' rules. Next up is Johnny's fellow punk pioneer Marky Ramone. I know "Blitzkreig Bop" is another uninspired choice, [...]
the Ronettes - "Be My Baby" ( Shindig! , 1965) I'm definitely not here to trash Ronnie Spector. It would take some kind of simpleton to deny her music's lasting impact and appeal. But I left Sunday's free concert feeling a bit muddled. My unease had nothing to do with the performance really. She's assembled an exceptional backing ensemble whose worship of her original material was obvious. No wanking guitar solos here, thanks. And [...]

Though it came and went in the blink of an eye, of all the musical movements, punk tends to live on in the imaginations of people. Just look at the number of documentaries, books, academic studies, magazine cover stories, compilation albums, and fashion aesthetics that still draw on punk. Whether it really was as revolutionary as it seemed, punk has definitely become iconic and continues to influence new bands with its sneering nihilism and DIY-learn-three-chords-and-for m-a-band approach. My personal connection to punk is one that actually started relatively later in life than for most. I was about [...]

I was listening to the radio the other day when a Johnny Thunders song came on. (Sirius Satellite Radio, of course – like government radio would play Johnny Thunders.) Hearing that song made me think I ought to post some of his music. There's not enough junkie business in the blogosphere these days. Then while checking Wikipedia for some bio info to sort of fill in the gaps of my post, I saw something interesting that I had not known before: The circumstances surrounding Johnny's death. I had always assumed [...]

While I generally think that the bulk of Thunders' solo work is pretty unimpressive, this 7" is the exception to the rule. In 1978 Thunders put out his first solo LP "So Alone" but this single with one edited song from the LP ("Can't..") and one non-album cut ("Hurtin") came out in the UK on Real Records prior to it's release and pontificates the sound that made Thunders a legend. Some Trivia: Thin Lizzy frontman Phil Lynott plays bass on the flip side. This post has: 2 MP3's

Since I'll have several days without any real responsibility around here I decided to finally condense my 25+ years of pack-ratting down to smaller, more portable containers. I had been storing everything in enormous, 60-gallon tubs that were so packed they couldn't be moved by a single person. Anyway, while going through everything I found stuff I didn't even remember I owned but, strangely, have become reattached to. Prime examples of what I consider to be treasures: -Original PYLON fan club membership package (circa 1989) -A hoard of early [...]

heading to london on sunday for a creative presentation. haven't been there since the london international awards a couple of years back. so i thought i'd share these pre-blog pics. at least i don't have to hang with bob garfield this time. what a twat. Johnny Thunders "London Boys"

Johnny Thunders would of been the rip ol' age of 55 today had he not passed away in 1991. I found the following birthday greeting from fellow New York Doll Sylvain Sylvain in a Myspace Bulletin: "although they don't show your scars are so old." Johnny was so right-on when he came up with that line. Although he is not here is with us, his beautiful guitar cadenzas he left behind will effect us everyday. We can hear and feel a different [...]
Wow. Last night's dinner party was pretty incredible. Good people, excellent food, an overall great experience. I sampled dishes I'd ordinarily shy away from, and tried my best to liven up the gathering with my particular brand of humor and gregariousness. On a scale of one-to-ten, I'd say my performance was a twenty-two billion, three-hundred eighty-four million, seventy-six thousand, one-hundred and forty two. Thanks, alcohol! Sorry. In all honesty, it was the most fun I've had here yet. Also, in accordance with the laws of full-disclosure, I'm obligated to inform you that I had to choke back a [...]

Johnny Thunders: You Can't Put Your Arms Around a Memory [1978] Ronnie Spector: You Can't Put Your Arms Around a Memory [1999] Memory is Johnny Thunders often-covered reworking of the New York Doll's Lonely Planet Boy . I guess it's appropriate that his song about heroin addiction became the standard Johnny Thunders' tribute. I didn't know the circustances of his death until reading the wiki entry this morning. Pretty lame. Ronnie Spector's fantastic version was produced by Joey Ramone (who also [...]
One band that still seems as fresh today as when they first rose up from the gutters of Manhattan's lower east side is the NY Dolls. That's not to say their junkie shtick wasn't a bit tiresome, and their odoferousness challenging even back in their heyday, but I just mean that the band seemed so far ahead of themselves, that their influence is still being felt all over the world today. The sheer youthful jerk off jubilation and utter societal disregard that is felt in their music makes it almost impossible to recreate, yet many have tried and [...]
