Thursday's things: ► Chuck Ragan and Hot Water Music are back with their first album since 2004. "Exister" came out last week to a warm embrace from longtime fans. The quartet celebrates its release with a sold-out show tonight at the Satellite. ► U.K. rock 'n' soul trio Little Barrie — fronted by Primal Scream/Paul Weller/Edwyn Collins collaborator Barrie Cadogan (and including Virgil Howe, son of Yes's Steve, on drums) — visits the Bootleg Bar behind last summer's release "King of the Waves." Jon McLaughlin - Hoosier piano-man says he knew his major label time was up when "I heard myself say fourth quarter budgets" in the middle of some leather-chaired executive meeting...new project is a rework of last year's independently-issued Forever If Ever with three new songs, a new mix and fresh artwork...the unfortunately-timed "Summer Is Over" featuring Sara Bareilles leads the way...self-producing and utilizing his touring band instead of label-directed session players, McLaughlin says of his new project, "It's the first time that I've listened to something at the end of each [...]

You know that excited anticipation you get when you know something good is coming? Like standing on the ledge of a pool on a hot day, about to jump in. Well, I was looking forward to talking with Jon McLaughlin like catching up with a good friend after a long vacation. I was thinking a sort of "bromance" that could easily find it's way to the bottom of a bottle of Maker's! My respect for Jon's heartfelt music began with his first album, Beautiful Disaster, released in 2007. That album was an easy staple of my year, [...]

Jon McLaughlin has released several solo records, independently that is, over the past few years. He is also responsible for songwriting many hits you may know of, some from Beyonce , some from Demi Lovato , and many many other pop artists. Today he released a delicious duet with none other than the most incredible of incredibles, Sara Bareilles . Its perfect love song and they can do no wrong. Does this mean a long one is forthcoming Please say yes. Buy it HERE (iTunes) after listening below. LOVE [...]
Jon McLaughlin - Hoosier-based piano-man says he knew his major label time was up when "I heard myself say fourth quarter budgets" in the middle of some leather-chaired executive meeting. Now happily suit-free and independent, McLaughlin returns with a dozen new songs...self-producing and utilizing his touring band instead of label-directed session players, McLaughlin says of his new project, "It's the first time that I've listened to something at the end of each day in the studio and I loved it, every single day..." // Release : Forever If Ever [...]
I have been married almost a full year now (almost) and yet I'm only half way through the reception portion of my wedding music. In lieu of that, and an impending anniversary, I thought it would be best to dump a lot more on you in one batch instead of doling out four measly tracks at a time. For those just joining these fair proceedings this is the list of songs that I played at my wedding. If you'd like to see all the posts with all of the songs posted so far simply follow the link [...]

Here are some of the singles/songs I liked from 2008 Anberlin - Feel Good Drag (Tiger Cover) A remake from Never Take Friendship Personal, this version is already a top ten modern rock hit. Jon McLaughlin - Beating My Heart The follow up album featured this song with a decidedly dance/pop direction not seen in his previous work. Switchfoot - This Is Home From The Prince Caspian Soundtrack and the new song on their greatest hit [...]
This set will probably stand as the poppiest and peppiest on Selective Service all year. Ladies and gentleman, I present to you my 20 favorite songs of 2008! "NINE IN THE AFTERNOON" by Panic at the Disco from Pretty. Odd Panic at the Disco dropped the exclamation mark and the dandy makeup from "A Fever You Can't Sweat" and gained a little bit of Beatlemania with their 2008 album "Pretty.Odd." While the album was a noble effort to infuse a 60s sound into [...]
Sorry for the bit of gloating , but "Smash Into You" from Beyoncé's new album is so totally Jon McLaughlin's "Smack Into You" (not that he helped write it--I've read nothing that supports that idea) with a little bit of lyrical alteration.
This could be completely 100% wrong, but does anyone else think there's a chance "Smash Into You" from Beyoncé's upcoming album might be a slightly reworked version of Jon McLaughlin's "Smack Into You"? Both have Tricky and The-Dream as writers and Beyoncé could have just altered, say, "smack" to "smash," few other things and got a writing credit. And it is a ballad that you could imagine fitting in on the I Am Beyonce part of the double album. Would also explain the song not making it onto Jon's album... Once again, I could be [...]

I can't remember whether I've ever mentioned this on the blog or only in comments elsewhere, but I don't like John Mayer's music (no, this isn't going to be about his rising-up-the-charts cover of "Free Fallin'")--blame "Your Body's A Wonderland" and "Daughters" (I'm sure I'm just setting myself up for the day he releases something brilliant and I have to take that back, but those songs really do drive me crazy). In fact, I usually, despite all evidence to the contrary presented here on the blog, think of myself as being pretty leery of male singer-songwriter types (note [...]

Jon McLaughlin's hits "Beautiful Disaster" and "So Close" (from the movie Enchanted) did not prepare me for his new single "Beating My Heart". I had been hearing the song on WayFM (89.9) for several weeks but was unaware that it was him. It is slick and catchy and has hit written all over it. You can vote for the video on VH-1's Top 20 Video Countdown . Go there and vote for it. The single is from the upcoming album OK Now due out October 7, 2008. Get the album [...]
another new jon mclaughlin track called, " smack into you ," just leaked and i love it. it's a slow song that should be off of his upcoming album, " ok now ." jon's vocals (light and occasionally in falsetto) soar over a clean and warm instrumental arrangement. when i first listened to the track, i sat back and let the song engulf me. cheesy, i know. but i'm a sucker for slow tracks like this one. jon mclaughlin - smack into you

There's a sun coming over the horizon. I wanna know where its coming from, but doesnt everyone? Its like who am I, and why am I here. Beating of My Heart by Jon Mclaughlin watcha think? [ lyrics ] [ music video ] [ download mp3 ]
There are times when I search my own blog and come away amazed that I've never posted about a certain artist. Jon McLaughlin is one of those artists and it's odd because I've seen him play live sets countless times. And I'm not talking about the live sets for which he {or his publicist} posts pictures on his myspace. I remember Jon as he is in this photograph. The non air brushed, slightly unpolished, boisterous kid from Anderson who played countless little shows around East Central Indiana all through my days of being an undergrad. [...]

Alrighty- I've been feeling a bit refreshed this week after an extended weekend beach getaway to the Gulf Coast last week (except for yesterday, and I've only got myself to blame for that). But the shortened week also left me a little bit behind in my musical quest for new schtuff. Thanks to Aubriane and 5andman for your comments, I only hope I can stand up to such high standards- which is why I chose not to include any Alanis Morissette on this week's mixtape. What I do have is a blend of new, slighty less [...]
I'm having a small Oscar party tonight, so in honor of my favorite awards show, I am posting the music nominated for both Original Song & Original Score (top song from the score). Root for Juno ! P.S. I think the songs from Enchanted are like two IQ points above special needs and I can't actually make myself listen to them. Also, Why the fuck did Enchanted get three muthafukin songs nominated when Once could have taken all five slots?! I demand justice. Grrrrrr. [...]
I hope I can be forgiven for grouping "Enchanted"'s three nominated songs together. As much as I enjoyed the film, I just don't think I could possibly write three days' worth of material on its music, and I'd rather have a couple extra days free to blog about other movie music. Just like "Dreamgirls" last year, "Enchanted" is up for three Oscars in the Best Original Song category, all by Disney's proven writing team of Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz. Menken is a ten-time Oscar nominee and an eight-time winner, having written the music for films [...]
