Back in October I wrote that Sacramento's Far was planning to play a handful of UK dates after 10 years apart. I was excited. The band came back under the moniker Hot Little Pony , knocked out a cover of Ginuwine's "Pony" and played a homecoming show in Sacto Jan. 15. Sounds like things are going well. The boys in Far have grown up. They're getting along. Rocking out. Bassist John Gutenberger looks like a bearded Jim Carrey . And they're steadily adding more dates, including one in San Francisco [...]

Picture by Rubén Navarro There is no real easy way to describe this entity that is Jonah Matranga . He is not, how you say...following the rules of the music world. You can't position him with your singer songwriters or your indie rock bands. While there are plenty of artists and bands that wear the label of "uncharacterized" like a badge of honor, Jonah just is. He's focused purely on following his vision of living the rock-life without compromise of his art. But what may seem as the average solo artist [...]

I've got company coming by this week so hopefully I can drag them to the God is an Astronaut show over at the Bottom of the Hill this week. If not, I won't be too upset. I'm already going to see Jonah Matranga and Kevin Seconds rock out on Tuesday and then catch the Jets vs 49ers game on Sunday. I have no shortage of things to do, so neither should you. Here are some reasons to leave the house this week. Sunday (Today): The [...]
As much as I wanna play along, I can't contain myself... FAR IS BACK ! Under the unique moniker, Hot Little Pony , Far has lined up two LA shows and a handful of UK shows to boot. Today the highly influential rock group released a video contest and a steamy new single that covers mid-90s R&B sensation, Ginuwine. Not only that but a they snagged a nice little indie snob article in Filter Magazine's website . Oct 15 2008 7:00P Glass House Pomona, [...]
Its looks as though one of my favorite bands of all time have been brewing up something behind the scenes. If you are unfamiliar with the band Far , you need to educate yourself my going here and buying Water & Solutions . Water & Solutions is a record that smacks you around while caressing you at the same time. Not many rock records bring on such an emotional punch like this record. After asking lead vocalist Jonah Matranga if a reunion was in the works, he responded with, " [...]
Johnny Cash - I Still Miss Someone At my door the leaves are falling A cold wild wind has come Sweethearts walk by together And I still miss someone I go out on a party And look for a little fun But I find a darkened corner because I still miss someone Oh, no I never got over those blues eyes I see them every where I miss those arms that held me When all the love was there [...]

Like I said earlier this month; this will be a concert year to remember. Here's 5 – 1 of the best concerts I've been to this year. 5 - TIE . Woven / Finn Riggins at Milly's Tavern, Manchester , NH – This show was really something special. I have been searching for records of this band for years and I eventually found their full length and older E.P. this past year. When I found out they were playing up here [...]
That's right. So all you hipster shits out there better keep your skinny jeans and aviator sunglasses out of his sight or else he'll take a freakin' axe to your neck. No seriously, in Jonah Matranga's recent video for " Not About A Place or A Girl ," he goes around singing what sounds like a Gin Blossoms cover and kills scenster zombies without mercy. It's a wonderful video despite the sugarcoated song. In fact, don't judge that song alone [...]
I really should pay better attention to Tuesday release lists because albums like Jonah Matranga's And just slip right by me. Dumb, dumb. I've yet to listen to the full album, but the lead single, So Long , is available via Limekiln Records and Jonah's MySpace page (and below). If there's anything I've learned listening to Matranga, especially his post- Far solo work, it's that he unapologetically wears his heart on his sleeve, a trait that even an armchair cynic like myself can appreciate. (Witness [...]
Great week of shows. We often don't say much about shows we take part in but when you get The Monolators, Mezzanine Owls, Amateurs, and Summer Darling in one room it's hard not to say something. Well, let's just say that we love these bands more than ever. Special thanks to our five readers for coming, KXLU, Rock Insider (who joined The Monolators for some triple-bass action on "We Fell Dead")

DOWNLOAD: Jonah Matranga - How Does Life Go? (MP3) ( info ) FUN FACT: Jonah Matranga is they guy singing "And he never lies" on "Instrumental" --> Track 7 on Lupe Fiasco 's Food & Liquor (one of my favorite albums of 2006 ). Jonah is playing two solo shows at SXSW, touring, and will be in the NYC area at the beginning of April. Tickets are on sale for [...]

If ever there was proof of Jonah Matranga's prolific output, it's all here in one nice package on The Three Sketchys , a collection of three homemade EPs that were self-released and distributed in various ways. This release combines all three (19 tracks) and includes a bonus remix of The Big Parade by Ian Sefchick, formerly of Creeper Lagoon . For some reason, the eMusic version includes a 20th track 14-41 (Prom-style)+Thoughts that doesn't appear to be on version at Jonah's store . And if [...]

Jonah Matranga is a veteran of a diverse set of rock bands (Far, New End Original, Gratitude) going back about 15 years. Jonah has now taken to the punk ethic (if not sound) of roaming the globe with a guitar and an amp and a book of intimate songs—both originals and interpretations of personal favorites. Jonah recently stepped out from behind the Onelinedrawing moniker he'd been using for his singerly/songwriterly work. Which makes sense: with music this approachable, we ought to be able to call him by name. "How Does Life Go?" is a heartbreaking yet catchy tune [...]
