Jonatha Brooke: Linger [ Purchase ] It's funny the things you remember. I was only ever in Missouri for a few hours, when I flew into the St. Louis airport to visit a friend living in Southern Illinois, and yet in my few hours there, I purchased this album. This song became my favorite from the album, I loved the lyrics. A few years later when I was attending grad school I used a quote from this song as an away message on my [...]

It's been a long, busy weekend, and it'll be a long night, too, with end-of-term grading due in the morning and a thick stack of final exams to go through first. I've got a great Covered in Kidfolk post half-drafted, complete with a contest give-away for Putumayo Kids' new acoustic lullaby CD, but it will have to wait; for now, here's a taste of Valentine's past, originally posted in 2008, to remind you to start making plans for next Monday. I spent all [...]

The Story: The Angel In The House [ purchase ] Long before Jonatha Brooke was a folkpop star, and Jennifer Kimball a lesser-known but no less talented interpreter and craftsperson in the Boston singer-songwriter scene, the two whet their teeth on the folkscene as The Story, a duo which came together when the two discovered each other finding beautiful, oft-dissonant harmonies among the more mainstream triads while in a chorus at Amherst College in 1981. Local buskers at first, and then struggling artists with day [...]

Jonatha Brooke had a new album come out in 2008, The Works - I was out of the country which is probably why I am only hearing about it now. Here's what she has to say about it over on her website: I don't think I've ever had such a creative high working on a record. I was inspired from the first trip to the Woody Guthrie Archives. Something magical happened and the melodies and the combinations of lyrics and prose just came together. I loved researching and [...]

There's so many bands from California, it would be an exercise in futility to try to pay tribute to all of them in a single post. But with two major native singer-songwriters and the entire Punk genre out of the way, we're left much closer to the mainstream, providing an opportunity to narrow our focus down. Here's a few major sixties and seventies pop and rock acts that are or were forever associated with the state which gave them their birth. Though Jerry Garcia's bluegrass and old [...]

Back to maudlin self-indulgence... You have been warned. One of these days, I'll get around to writing about playlists. I have a lot of them, and have been known to spend whole days under my headphones, fine-tuning them and making new ones. Among my many playlists are a number devoted to ex-girlfriends, and also a "depression" playlist. That's music that will bring me down hard if I'm in a good mood, but which is deeply comforting when I am already down there in the foul rag and bone shop of the heart . Like now. [...]

This past weekend, my wife and I took a mini vacation to Nashville. My wife is five months pregnant with our first child, and we decided to take a weekend for ourselves before the new arrival arrives this summer. We stayed at a lovely Bed & Breakfast in East Nashville, ate some BBQ and home cooking , toured the Ryman , and generally just tried to relax. The main reason for our trip, however, was that Jonatha Brooke was playing a Sunday night show at 3rd and [...]
Taking my wife to Nashville this weekend to see Jonatha Brooke at 3rd and Lindsley. I've never seen Jonatha live, but I'm becoming more familiar with her work. She's one of my wife's favorite songwriters, and we're both looking forward to the trip. Here are a couple of live performances of songs from her classic album Steady Pull .

Jonatha Brooke feat. Michael Franti: Steady Pull [ purchase ] 2001's Steady Pull represented new directions for Jonatha Brooke. She had just completed a cross country move prior to recording the album and was feeling refreshed and reinvigorated in the studio. The album itself contained many artistic leaps and experiments for Brooke. She co-produced the album, played several instruments (guitars, wurlitzer, finger bells, ukulele, piano, bass), and even arranged strings for the first time in her career. The feeling of experimentation was carried over on the [...]

Jonatha Brooke: Genius or a Fool [ Purchase ] I respect comedians immensely. I think it's such a talent to be able to understand what is funny and what is not, what crosses the line between funny and inappropriate and the timing to pull it all off and get the best result. Someone might make an ass of themselves and look ridiculous, but it's when they know exactly what they're doing and to what affect (specifically, I enjoy it when they can make everyone in a room laugh without hurting [...]
Y esterday I had to make a trip to the local mall. When I was younger, growing up in a rural area, the mall was an amazing place. It was over 50 miles away and was a place to go get pretty much anything you needed. Nowadays, malls have been reduced to specialty chains selling wares for an exorbitant amount, really bad fast food and loads of teens cruising for...well, something or someone. I was lucky enough to miss out on the teenagers, since I went during the day. (The teens come out at night.) [...]

New York is my favorite city in the whole world. I love that I can do anything I want at just about any given time, and if I can't do it quite at that moment, I know it's only hours away until I can do it. I'm elated to be living back in my birthplace, although I enjoyed the California weather for 5+ years, I am not California material at this point in my life. It's a gorgeous place to visit but I am a New Yorker at heart and I will always have a yearning in my soul if [...]
