Catherine Market is a truly yummy sounding record. Jonathan Byerley – also of Brooklyn’s Plates of Cake - has a voice so low in pitch and so rounded that it sounds slowed down. It's oddly serene and suitably bass leaden for the psychedelic intro track A Theme for All of Us . Byerley’s voice is the focus of the album. It seems heavy and aged as good whiskey, reminding us of Lou Reed. With a conversational and honest delivery, it’s easy to picture him telling the story on a sunny porch somewhere, especially on the reflective [...]

1. Jonathan Byerley - "I Still Pull The Silver (From The Penny Drawer)" (The frontman for the Brooklyn-based indie rock band Plates Of Cake steps out with a folk-leaning solo album, Catherine Market , out this week on La Société Expéditionnaire . Lyrically, his music is Dylan-inspired and his voice resembles Cohen in timbre and the dusty, shuffling psych-folk shows a new and captivating side to the songwriter on his sophomore release.) http://www.la-soc.com/jbyerley .html Download: http://la-soc.com/singlemp3s/i _still_pull_the_silver. mp3 [...]

Here's another assortment of tracks and videos to consider this Memorial Day. Jonathan Byerley "I Still Pull The Silver (From the Penny Drawer)" The former Plates of Cake frontman channels his inner Knopfler/Dylan on this track. The delivery is priceless, and this is a taste of what's to come on his new solo album, Catherine Market . Look for it on July 10th via La Société Expéditionnaire. - Glaciers [...]

Here is a collection of tracks that have found their way into our in-box or on to our iTunes one way or another recently, and which deserve far more time and effort spent on them than we are currently able to give. Plenty to soundtrack your Friday with. Brooklyn’s indie pop three-piece Violens have just released their second LP, True , on Slumberland Records. The album’s first single, Totally True , has a dreamy stone-washed feel, celebrating bands like Cocteau Twins and The Chameleons . a [...]

A while back we opened the book on the awkwardly-named, but mighty talented Plates Of Cake . Lead singer Jonathan Byerley dropped us a line yesterday to let us know he has packed up his guitar, his uber-literate musings and his noteworthy croon, and set off on his inaugural solo voyage. Catherine Market , available on July 10th from La Société Expéditionnaire, is a bit of a throwback; a singer-songwriter record that eschews many of the cliches that drag the genre into the quagmire of cliche. [...]

Plates Of Cake frontman Jonathan Byerley channels the spirit of a true rock & roll outcast, delivering an oddball classic of literate, rambling gems (think Skip Spence and Gene Clark). Catherine Market , his debut solo LP, is a contemporary twist on sun-scorched country-rock; a golden key to the long-locked bungalows of Laurel Canyon circa 1969. The Brooklyn-based songwriter recorded Catherine Market in Boulder, Colorado with friends at Rockbox Analog Fidelity, a now-defunct basement studio that was once the center of a revolving cast of [...]

Below is a list of quotes I assembled from the past week. Who knows, maybe we'll make this a regular feature? BeHOLD: "I am a waiter on a private yacht / I look at all the faces and I want what they've got" - Plates Of Cake singer/principle songwriter Jonathan Byerley, talkin' it straight. "They're playing like they [...]
