Cool clip time! It features all-around rocker good guy Chris Slusarenko (and Robert Pollard collaborator ) who, with the help of John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask, the original brains behind Hedwig & the Angry Inch , put out " Wig in a Box ". The clip below features Chris meeting Jonathan Richman and talking about covering The Origin of Love (Jo Jo's version), among songs from the Hedwig & the Angry Inch soundtrack. Good stuff, worth a watch. Lots of love within the frame.

Don't Let Our Youth Go to Waste Ladies and Gentleman... It's Richman's song, and it's a classic. The first time I heard it however, was on vinyl and by the band Galaxie 500. I had no idea it belonged to the mad genius behind "She's Cracked", "Roadrunner", and "Pablo Picasso" and this just barely stubs a toe against the vast wonderful catalog that is Jonathan Richman's. "Don't Let Our Youth Go to Waste" is rock music's greatest expression of the carpe dium credo. It's not just a call to [...]

Early morning Barcelona airport I flew to Spain on Monday, travelling via Barcelona and Santiago de Compostela, and will be here for another 4 to 5 weeks, or at least until spring shows its pretty face. I'm here visiting my brother in the lovely (and small) seaside town of Cambados (Galicia), and can see the Atlantic tide come in just outside my window. I figured a relevant trip-related post was surely in order! Grandaddy - [...]

Every band pays tribute to their favourite artists with cover versions but only a few take hero worship to the level of writing new songs about their idols. These are songs by artists I like about folks they like, plus tracks by the people that inspired them. Tomorrow I'll post some more, all with a Woody Guthrie/Bob Dylan connection. MP3: The Rockingbirds - Jonathan Jonathan MP3: Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers - Roadrunner [...]
Pat used to be my neighbor. Now he's a friend! Also, he's still Nicci's neighbor, so I see him pretty much daily. He's kind of an enigma, because he acts like he hates himself all the time and yet he's one of the most successful people I've ever met. Like, out of everybody I know who has a job or a vocation (ie lawyer, computer technician, teacher) he's probably the most successful at what he does. Still, I am amused to no end by his depression and foul mouthed antics. I couldn't think of anything to write about [...]
I'm giving Obama until Thursday to restore my 401K to where it was a year ago. Otherwise, this "change" thing is bullspit! I want wine to flow from the water faucets, manna to fall from the sky and disease to be eradicated! I'll give him until Friday for that. Clearly, the stakes are high with this regime change. I saw something on CNN stating that his inauguration speech " is one of the most anticipated speeches in decades, with many expecting his words to be chiseled into marble some day." [...]
I could easily link you to a streaming version of this tune, but the irony makes me extremely uncomfortable. (The guy hosting it has noted this irony as well, and suggests, as I heartily do, that yo... Continue reading "On Jonathan Richman's "You Can Have a Cellphone, That's OK, But Not Me"" >

Cantava in italiano . E invitava alla calma. la mia mente così veloce, così veloce la mia [...]

We had the distinct pleasure of seeing Franz Ferdinand at a beachside bar in San Diego last night, and super-hyped local band The Soft Pack (nee The Muslims) had the opening slot. A heady stew of Velvet Underground, Jonathan Richman, The Replacements, and youthful arrogance (Hmm, maybe those last two are the same...), The Soft Pack deliver hooky, loud, articulately messy songs that often go nowhere, which works for them, since right where they started is oftentimes a pretty great place to be. "Nightlife" is a deceptively simple tune, anchored by meaty bass and drums until the chorus [...]

I thought I would share a few tracks that I had not heard until I read about them on the copious year end lists of the blog-o-sphere. They were OFF MY RADAR. So, I present... Downloadables: "You Can Have A Cellphone That's OK But Not Me" by Jonathan Richman "Red Herring" by Harlem "Science Fiction" by French Miami I have been doing [...]
"WHEN WE REFUSE TO SUFFER", JONATHAN RICHMAN (de "Because Her Beauty is Raw and Wild", Vapour) É pena, mas aparentemente não está disponível vídeo ou áudio desta canção nos canais habituais (talvez tenha sorte quem esteja registado no imeem.com). "When We Refuse..." vem servida em nada mais, nada menos, que três versões. Duas encontram-se no álbum, a terceira encontra-se no lado B do single.

This year seemed to be the year in which the 73 single returned to prominence. It's not like it ever really went away, but this year bands and labels were putting them out left a right. Vinyl in general, is making a resurgence with the prevalence of file downloading a cd is just a lousy digital copy that takes up too much space, whereas a slab of vinyl is more like a work of art with it being big enough to actually appreciate the cover art. It also comes in many shades, with colored vinyl showing up almost as much [...]
I'm kind of picky about what I'll be attending this week. It looks as though Subtle at the Independent has my attention so far. However seeing Audrye Sessions and Cold War Kids would be nice. Too bad I have this full time job I have to keep up with. Anyway, if you're going to the KITS LIVE 105's NSSN 08 or the Pre-Party show (click the picture for tickets), try to make the local band showcase and check out Picture Atlantic and Dizzy Balloon at the ol' Cafe du Nord. [...]
I'm excited to have added a Jonathan Richman music mix in my right column, courtesy of Imeem . I love that service, a great way to hear and spread music around the web-o-sphere. And I love Jonathan Richman. Always have, ever since my old college pal (and frequent espresso drinker) Randy turned me onto the Modern Lovers live LP way back when. You can listen to it here or over at my Dfactor Imeem page .

You might know Jonathan Richman as the lyrical powerhouse and front-man of The Modern Lovers . Most people haven't heard his solo work, or better yet, his instrumentals. Photo: waltzcore I've wrangled up three of his finest tracks without lyrics, for your listening pleasure. We also threw in a Basement Jaxx bit that samples Richman's "Egyptian Reggae," turning his acoustic guitar riffs into a quirky dance track. Download: Jonathan Richman - Egyptian Reggae | [...]

Phil and the Osophers Genre: Lyrical / Lyrical / Lyrical From: Brooklyn, New York United States Brooklyn two piece bikini Phil and the Osophers (apparently planning to become a three piece suit at some point in the near future) may have a crap name but they have an interesting and intriguing sound. Imagine if [...]

Ezra Furman & The Harpoons Genre: Acoustic / Indie / Folk From: Boston/Chicago, United States Every decade since the 60s some young singer-songwriter with an acoustic guitar and a nasal vocal is hailed as the new Bob Dylan only to disappear under the weight of expectation. The finger picking folk and witty, confessional tracks on [...]

Crystal Stilts, Alight Of Night (Slumberland, 2008) MP3 : "SinKing" In 08, "crystal" has become the new "wolf," and we have proof: First we had electro-zombies Crystal Castles exploding all over the Internets, getting in all sorts of trouble on tour across the nation, and even accusing Timbaland of stealing one of their beats. Then PFork introduced us to Crystal Antlers, a rough and tumble rock outfit who deliver aggressive sounds akin to Shellac, Les Savy Fav, and the Jesus Lizard - and [...]
Via Kevin Bronson's BuzzBands: Safari Sam's, the east Hollywood nightclub that opened in April 2006 with grand plans and big dreams, closed quietly last week. Rumors of owner Sam Lanni's mounting debts had circulated around the L.A. scene for a year, and the club never found its niche in booking acts that would consistently fill the [...]

The home stretch. Less than three weeks before we get to vote for regime change . I can't wait. How will the Repugnikkans steal this one? Voter fraud ? Pre-programmed voting machines ? Armed guards preventing voters from getting in ? The possibilities are endless! Whatever. Nevermind. As long as we still have rock n roll, how bad can things be? Oh yeah. Bad. Real bad! But today was one of those days when the right batch of tunes came over the mp3 player [...]
