The Twilight Singers gave a taut, powerful performance on Wednesday night at the Music Box, with Greg Dulli and crew pounding through a set that featured a cameo by Mark Lanegan and included material from their latest album "Dynamite Steps." Margot & the Nuclear So and So's opened, and L.A.'s Jonneine Zapata , fronting a trio, kicked off the night with a short but riveting set. Photographer Laurie Scavo sends along this gallery.

Jonneine Zapata gives us a taste of her debut release, Cast the Demons Out with the single "Good Looking." Her sound it reminescent of PJ Harvey and Patti Smith. A polished performer, she has previously toured with Jack White's The Raconteurs and Soulsavers (with Mark Lanegan). This past spring, she played a three-day stint at South By Southwest Music Festival in Austin, TX where she shared the bill with acts such as V.V. Brown, Fitz and the Tantrums, Banjo or Freak Out, Yacht, Fool's Gold, and Bear Hands. Before the end of the year, she plans to debut new music, [...]

He might be irritating beyond belief, but you can't really fault Jack White's ears. He got Jonneine Zapata along to warm up audiences for The Raconteurs a short while back, and you can see why. She's heading off to the studio with Steve Albini next, which is another good sign. Meanwhile, she's got an album to promote, Cast The Demons Out, and this is, in part, what it sounds like: Good Looking . There's something about being crunchy and ethereal at the same time that can be very different to pull off without turning into [...]

I'm on assignment for SPIN.com this week at SXSW — as well as trying to squeeze in some coverage for the mothership Buzz Bands LA. I filed several bits Wednesday for SPIN, so fans of the Happy Hollows , the Morning Benders and Everybody Was in the French Resistance ... Now [that's Eddie Argos, above], should follow this link right here . ◊ ◊ ◊ Jonneine Zapata had dazzling red boots. Red Cortez had some sizzling new [...]
[Off to SXSW soon — I'm warmed up, and some local bands are getting there too ...] Their sophomore album "Volume Two" comes out March 23, and She & Him — that's Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward, if you don't remember them from the Paste magazine cover, and that's their video for their rather saccharine pop ditty "In the Sun," above — get ready to take on Austin by playing a show at Largo. ... L.A.'s Andy Clockwise is SXSW-bound too, and he prepares with a headlining date [...]

Colorado's Monolith Festival is in trouble. Organizers of the three-year-old event, plagued the past two years by fractious Rocky Mountain weather, told fans in an e-mail "the future of the festival is very grim," and that they have "been unable to secure any options" that dig the fest out of its financial hole. Included was a plea for potential buyers/investors. [Full text of the letter after the jump.] Meanwhile, Bonnaroo announced its ninth annual event will be held June 10-13, 2010, near Manchester, Tenn. Tickets go on sale at noon Nov. 27. Meanwhile, only 148 days [...]

Snow Patrol plays the Wiltern in advance of the Nov. 10 release of their best of compilation "Up to Now" and the Nov. 3 release of their (wait for it) DJ mix CD, "Late Night Tales". There are several new recordings between these two releases, which means there may just be a few surprises tonight. … Until the Pavement reunion kicks off next year, satiate your addiction with guitarist Scott Kannberg's solo project Spiral Stairs (his moniker on the early Pavement records), playing with Hüsker Dü and Sugar frontman/guitarist Bob Mould tonight at the Troubadour. [...]
Jonneine Zapata has a stare that makes grown men cower and weep. She is the closest thing to Jim Morrison in the Silverlake scene and her live show is mesmerizing. She speaks to Scott Schultz about Nick Cave , the importance of eye contact and how macrobiotics go with an Italian meal in Brooklyn.

[It's Colin Meloy's birthday, so we send best wishes to him as we dive headlong into a new week ...] Three excellent residencies start in Silver Lake/Echo Park environs, all featuring artists whose albums I have touted in this space. Jonneine Zapata [ album , tour diary ], fresh off the road with Soulsavers, does Mondays this month at the Silverlake Lounge, and tonight the support includes the Faraway Places and newbies International Tennis Champions , who just finished recording their new material at [...]

[Nothing like a little quality time with Steve Albini to end your tour. Following is the final installment of the journal Jonneine Zapata kept while she and her band were on tour with Soulsavers . Miss any? They're all here .] Sept. 25 Could not have been happier to get on our way to Toronto (also, I've never been), but this was gonna be a little bit of a journey, starting with: We can't take the van into [...]

To listen to Jonneine Zapata's new record, 'Cast The Demons Out' is to listen to a record with an intensity I haven't heard since Springsteen's Nebraska. To see her live is to feel you heart and lungs filled with the smoky intensity of a performer who's passion knows no boundaries. Having just completed a tour with Mark Lanegan's Soulsavers, she drew rave reviews in cities across the country who compared her with everyone from PJ Harvey to Jim Morrison. We were able to sit down with her after an intense show in Dallas, earlier in the [...]

[The next-to-last installment of Jonneine Zapata's journal ...] Sept. 22, New York City Lord have mercy on our poor little souls — there's just no parking the van in the city! We're in a speculative spot right in front of the club (Bowery Ballroom), but technically you can't park there until 7 p.m. It's 5 p.m. Draw straws? And that person can wait on the curb (in beautiful New York City where everyone has 3,000 friends apiece) and watch so we don't get a ticket (which [...]

[Chapter 3 of Jonneine Zapata's tour diary. The singer and her quintet are on a national tour supporting Soulsavers: ] Sept. 12 Underestimated San Diego. At 8:30 p.m., kids lined up on the street outside the Casbah, and they're dead interested in the openers. Is this a trip to you? Because it's a trip to me. The room is exactly our speed — tight stage, low lit and close to the ground. The mic is spasming on every song (cutting in and out on [...]

[L.A. songstress Jonneine Zapata and her quintet are on their first big tour, supporting the Mark Lanegan-fronted Soulsavers. Here's Chapter 2 of her tour diary:] Sept. 9 Cold, windy night in San Francisco. Sort of crept up on us. The Independent is a great space, the house crew are comical, and if you can still use the word friendly without being ridiculed, well then, they are the friendliest crew you're gonna come across. As far as the show [...]

Jonneine Zapata flew onto L.A.'s radar early this year with the self-released album "Cast the Demons Out," and ever since she's been winning fans wherever her five-piece band performs. Zapata recently scored a slot opening for the Mark Lanegan-fronted band Soulsavers, her first major tour (including a stop tonight at the Troubadour). With guitarists Jeff Mendel and Johnny Badway, bassist Steve Tegel and drummer Jeff Cohlman in tow, Zapata will do 13 shows with Soulsavers before heading back to L.A. for an October residency at the Silverlake Lounge. She's agreed to author a tour [...]
