I like how it's not such a shock anymore to find good country music nowadays, speaking in this case about Andrew Combs ' new 7," Big Bad Love (physical release May 8, 2012). "Take It From Me" is lulling and warm, brightening with organ and steel, and softening with Combs' vocals, which don't have the sunny, almost sour, twang of lots of country artists. Rather, his just have a grey southern lilt, and the song is reminiscent of one of Ryan Adams' lovely, defeated let-down tunes. The title track bites harder with blues groove dug out with [...]

photos by Chris La Putt Corndawg & Ellis @ Mercury Lounge Of all the unique characters at the South by Southwest Music Conference last week, few stood out like Jonny Corndawg. A twangy song picker from rural Virginia -- "I never really quite fit in there, which explains a lot," he says -- the real-life Jonny Fritz made a striking figure physically in Austin, with his rail-thin frame under a wide-brimmed cowboy hat. He was conspicuous musically, too, with [...]

Robert Ellis - What's In It For Me Shovels & Rope - Boxcar Jonny Corndawg - Shut Up To be completely honest, when last nights show was announced a few months ago, and I saw what day the show was on (4/1) I thought it was either a very early April Fools joke, or a show that was booked entirely just for me. Three of my absolute favorite acts all on one stage, in a small venue one that I really enjoy. Excitedly, I scooped up tickets and [...]

Jonny Corndawg poses with fans @ SXSW 2012 ( photo by zavertnik ) Alt-country, singer-songwriter associates Jonny Corndawg and Robert Ellis are out on the road with "sloppy tonk" band Shovels + Rope . That tour brings the party to Mercury Lounge in NYC tonight (4/2) for a show that begins with with a set by Colin Langenus (USAISAMONSTER). Tickets are still on sale (for those who didn't win tix in our [...]

What kind of sick April Fool's joke is it to have two killer concerts in that same city on the same night? While I am at the Revival Tour tonight at the Middle East, which I believe is sold out, I want you to check out Jonny Corndawg with Shovels & Rope and Robert Ellis at the Great Scott. Here's our main man Jonny Corndawg with his Couch by Couchwest performance (more on Couch by Couchwest later). He may be [...]
App loading... Please enable javascript. I'm putting another quick sweepstakes offer to win 2 tickets to see Jonny Corndawg this Sunday night at Great Scott in Boston. Its practically the show of the decade for me here, he'll be backed up by Shovels and Rope and Robert Ellis , two acts that I never shut up about. I'll pick the winner randomly on Saturday and see you there on Sunday night. Enter and win.

@KRBronson on Saturday's final fling at SXSW: [...]

Jonny Corndawg - Shut Up I've been meaning to post this, as a treat Newport Folk Fest and Jonny Corndawg released a Dad Country B-side titled "Shut Up." Though if you've seen Jonny live I'm quite certain you've heard the track, because it appeared on his album, I'm Not Ready to be a Daddy . But this is a new more full sound, a completely different feel, it includes a solo from one of my favorites, Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes). Corndawg will be touring relentlessly, and will make a couple of stops [...]

It is nearly time for SxSW again, a time when my envy-meter overheats and I hate everyone who is going... However, that aside, American Songwriter have put together this tasty little free digital mix that includes Brendan Benson, Shelly Colvin, Wild Cub and Delta Spirit's brilliant new track California amongst others. One of our picks from the the indomitable Johnny Corndawg is below, but you can simply grab the whole thing for an e-mail sign-up from Bandcamp here . Download Johnny Corndawg - [...]
Friday, March 2, 2012 Today's Quick Mention: It's time. I must make a SXSW schedule this weekend. Like every year, I'm dreading it, but hopefully I'll come up with something that's doable and fun. Wish me luck. Music for your mom. Enjoy. : Amanda Mair - Sense : I still have a rather hard time believing this girl is 17. She's really good, and I don't just mean good for someone who [...]

wowza! i havent seen too many of the other lineups out there, but me thinks, and of course i am biased, you'd be hard pressed to find a better couple shows to check out while y'all are galavanting around sxsw. so with out further adieu here are the lineups to the two shows. also thanks to the sponsors, listed below, who helped make this possible. most of the bands can be found via this american music , if not their respective websites have been linked to. wednesday's party, btw, has free torchy's tacos! Thanks in part to her ubiquitous 1991 hit single Something To Talk About , Bonnie Raitt became one of the biggest selling female artists of the late '80s/early '90s , but it took the blues singer-songwriter nearly 20 years and 10 albums to finally get the attention and big break that she deserved. On April 10, the Rock & Roll Hall Of Famer will release her 16th studio album, Slipstream , her first in seven years and the debut album for her own label, Redwing Records. The 12-track record, which Raitt self-produced with [...]
Thursday, February 9, 2012 Jonny Corndawg To be honest, I'm super picky about my folk/country acts when it comes to SXSW. That's an exhausting week, and watching someone lightly pluck on a guitar while softly singing is the best way to get me to totally fall asleep while standing up. Mr. Corndawg, who will be using SXSW as a kick off for a two month tour, is not capable of this. The man oozes charm, he's hilarious on stage, [...]

We all love lists, and we all love sarcasm. Though, I think its important to reflect upon the last year of music, I'm going to do so through the use of a list. It was a fantastic year full of awesome albums, and I'm going to count down a bunch of my favorites, and give you something to listen to while reading. 30. White Denim - D White Denim - Anvil Everything The bluesy, garage-rock trio White Denim created a psych-rock abstract album that was a bit avant-garde and [...]
Jonny Corndawg - Chevy Beretta Tonight at the Paradise comes to town a huge favorite of mine Mr. Jonathan Fritz, aka Jonny Corndawg. He's bringing wild leather goods, quick witted country songs that will make you laugh ( Exercise ) and ones that might make you cry ( Undercover Dad ). Jonny truly is a one of a kind artist, and I'm happy to get the chance to have a sit down with him tonight. Jonny has been on tour for what seems to be forever and we're lucky to have him here in town. He [...]

Jonny Corndawg is easily one of my favorite artists I've discovered this year. He is an earnst singer/songwritter and a cornicopia of hidden talents. His newest album, Down on the Bikini Line , came out at the tail end of August and after living with it for a couple of months I'm comin' at you today to reccomend it. Your ears will thank me once they've been inflitrated by his quarky sense of humor wrapped up in a healthy dose of country lovin' and smoothered in that [...]
Friday, October 21, 2011 Today's Quick Mention: There's so much to do this weekend. The Austin Film Festival continues, the Austin Record Convention is going down at the North Lamar Events Center, and there's plenty of good shows. Tonight you'll find Battles at Emo's East, Talib Kweli at the Mohawk, and Sleeping In The Aviary at Hole In The Wall. As for Saturday, Boats are at Beauty Bar and White Denim is playing Stubb's. You could stay in Sunday ... unless you like the Drums, who will be occupying the [...]
