Outside Lands Festival, 8.22.08, 10:26pm Thursday evening, The Wordless Music series came to San Francisco's Herbst Theatre in the form of the Magik Magik Orchestra conducted by Benjamin Shwartz to play pieces by John Adams, Fred Firth , Arvo Part, Mason Bates and Jonny Greenwood. Greenwood's Popcorn Superhet Receiver was making it's West Coast premiere, but all of the pieces from the evening made for a powerful night of twisting your mind around the conventions of music. The evening's most abstract piece, Save As from Fred Frith had [...]

well what should have been a gushing jizztorrent of filmmaking has in fact turned out to be a bit of a prostate damaged weak stream. it opens promisingly enough with no dialogue, just pure physical acting for the first fifteen minutes from daniel day lewis (one of two exceptional things about the film), as we see plainview [...]

Here's a track taken from the frankly awful Bowie biopic 'Velvet Goldmine'. Thought this was kinda relevant as two of the people involved are now producing the biggest albums around. Brian Eno (who wrote it) has just done the new Coldplay record and Bernard Butler (who plays on it) is riding high in the charts with Duffys record. The Venus in Furs were a band made up for the film and consisted of Radiohead's Thom York and Jonny Greenwood, Suede's Bernard Butler, Roxy Music's Andy Mackay and David Gray. Pretty stellar cast (apart from David Gray). [...]

There Will Be Blood was my favorite movie of 2007 without a doubt. The movie came out on DVD last week, and it is a masterpiece that deserves to be viewed by your eyes. Here's why. 1. Daniel Day-Lewis gives one of the best acting performances I have ever seen as Daniel Plainview, a self-proclaimed "oil man" who is a perfect example of what greed and ambition can do to a human being. 2. Paul Dano is phenomenal as well with the soon-to-be-classic character of Eli Sunday. Sunday is a loud, bombastic preacher who develops [...]

Yesterday, as I was watching the Oscars I was shocked to not see Jonny Greenwood's There Will Be Blood soundtrack nominated. I could have sworn he was nominated but after digging around I found that the soundtrack had been disqualified in January because not enough of the music included in the film had been written exclusively for the film. So much for me being an unquestioned Radiohead expert. I posted two tracks from the album here and here are two more... Jonny [...]
You could say this week's mix is brought to you by pedal steel and the number 8. (All but one song is the 8th track on their albums) Or you could just call this a well rounded and country influenced Friday Mix. Whichever you choose. I've sworn off the "blogging about blogging" post so I'll just end with this, there are changes a comin'. Jonny Greenwood – Proven Lands [...]

December hasn't produced many albums this year, but there are a few worth noting. On the big name front, Wu Tang Clan finally released 8 Diagrams and members of Weezer and Radiohead released solo albums. On the more underground side of things, there were some good releases from The Dimes , Wakey ! Wakey ! , and DC's Meredith Bragg . Meredith Bragg Silver Sonya - " [...]
It's not very often that I recommend a movie soundtrack, but then again it's not every day that a movie soundtrack composed by Jonny Greenwood is released. So today I'm celebrating the soundtrack to the upcoming Paul Thomas Anderson film There Will Be Blood, and obviously most of you Radiohead fans will be out listening to this today too. Obviously There Will Be Blood is not a Radiohead album.

I saw There Will Be Blood last night at the cast and crew screening at The Ziegfeld, and I'm calling out Jonny Greenwood for the best score of 2007. From the opening minutes until the bitter end some 160 minutes later, I was leaning forward in my seat, amazed and delighted that such audacious dissonance could be possible in a big budget American film - and a Western, no less. The music is what Ligeti might have composed for a John Ford epic, the unholy spawn of a union between Clint Eastwood and Krzysztof Penderecki. [...]
The front runners for the 2008 acting Oscars are a sociopathic oil baron, a psychotic hitman, a transgender Bob Dylan and a wiseass pregnant teenager. Amazing. It's just like Christmas at our house.

Karlheniz Stockhausen dead at 79 - NY Times Stockhausen was a huge contributor to European Avant-Garde music and has had some lasting impact on todays musical landscape. Jonny Greenwood is a huge fan. Jonny Greenwood - Future Markets (There Will Be Blood Soundtrack)

Hey, did you hear about the new Radiohead album? What? Oh. OK.
Ill get the initial stuff out of the way and say that Im one of those Radiohead geeks that sees anything remotely related to the band and goes ga ga over it. I wasnt much of an electronic music fan until Jonny Greenwood tossed his solo album my way. I didnt care for live releases until I got my hands on my first Radiohead bootleg. And when it comes to my all time best albums list, The Bends and OK Computer are represented well. I say all that to say that The Eraser is [...]
