Last night we heard the news that the father of modern anthropology and noted figure of structuralism Claude Lévi-Strauss passed away, aged 101. An important thinker of 21th century and one of the greats who did much to celebrate different cultures of the world. A proper way to thank him would be with a diverse selection around the world, that's when our friend Ozgur Uckan gave the keyword "Tristesse Tropiques". This selection is a collab between him and me, features music from Brasil, Angola, Hawaii, Egypt & Cuba, more or less around the tropics, and almost exclusively sad. [...]

What better way to celebrate St. Patty's Day than to listen to ten different versions of Brazil's "all-time best" song. Easily, this is one of my all-time favorite standards. This was the first version of this song I can remember hearing. It was around 1994. I was struck by how out of place the song sounded when heard with the other tracks on Breakaway. The seductive sounds of João Gilberto, age 77, performing with just his guitar at Carnegie Hall (June 2008) Today's special post requires some explanation. Earlier this summer, as part of my Sunday Spotlight feature, I (we) had the chance to get to know singer/songwriter Alyssa Graham a little better ( back here ) . One of the juicy bits Alyssa shared was her admiration for the Father of Bossa Nova, legendary Brazilian singer and guitar player João Gilberto . Always [...]

JORGE BEN Jorge Ben - Take It Easy My Brother Charlie "Of all the musicians who came to prominence in the 1960's, Jorge Ben has always seemed to be the one to whom music-making came easiest. Feted by the Bossa crowd, the Tropicalia crowd and even the rock musicians of the Jovem Guarda, Ben has always stood outside all those movements while being able to move freely between all of them." Joao Gilberto - Aguas de Marco

João Gilberto is the godfather and master deliver of bossa nova . His 1959 debut album Chega de Saudade is considered the launch point for the Brazilian percussion-melodic samba genre. Gilberto does not use his guitar for bringing Zeus like power. He uses it in an angelic soft bop to the already beautiful vacation music. This music should be going through Hugh Hefner and James Bond's minds at all time. If you want to sit back and relax and 'wait til the time is right' flip the switch with this must have. [...]
