Hot Tuna: Jorma Kaukonen (left) and Jack Casady (right) I've been lucky enough to have seen the legendary guitarist /songwriter Jorma Kaukonen perform solo on a number of occasions over the years and I last saw Hot Tuna live (with Barry Mitterhoff on mandolin at the time) back in 2006 at Merlefest. All of those live shows which I've seen to this point were presented in an acoustic setting, more in line with Hot Tuna's earliest performances and with Kaukonen's solo [...]

For the last several months, Ruthie Foster, Jorma Kaukonen and Robben Ford have been on the road together, packaged as the Guitar Blues Tour. I was lucky enough to hear them play at the Aladdin Theater on Sunday night, a nice, enjoyable couple hours of music. The showstopper was, uniquely enough, the showstarter: Ruthie Foster. There's no one on the planet with a stronger, more soulful voice than the woman from East Texas that I've been raving about for the past year. With only 6 songs in her set, she made the most of [...]

Try finding a better finger picking acoustic guitar player than Jorma Kaukonen . You might as well give up and pop his new album River of Time in the player instead. Though most people will associate Kaukonen with the Jefferson Airplane his first love was acoustic blues and country. Some of the songs were regulars in the live shows of Hot Tuna , the band he co-founded with Jack Cassady after the duo had left the Airplane. Been So Long and Operator are revisited and have been giving [...]

Jorma Kaukonen's legendary career spans the better part of five decades. While he is probably best known for his role as an electric guitarist in Jefferson Airplane during the late 60's/early 70's and as a founding member of the acoustic blues/rock group Hot Tuna, Kaukonen is also considered by many to be one of the preeminent practitioners of the Piedmont finger-picking style of acoustic blues. Two of the finest examples of his acoustic guitar work can be found on his 1974 solo album Quah (which is a masterpiece) and more recently on 2002's [...]

i finally saw margot at the wedding a couple weeks ago, & i still can't figure out if i enjoyed it or not...you know, most of the characters in noah baumbach's films are abrasive & unlikable, but at least they're funny, nicole kidman was just ruthless in this one & it was kind of uncomfortable to watch...still, i thought it was very well made & superbly written, with some fantastic performances, particularly from jack black who was absolutely hilarious...it's not kicking and screaming or anything, but i'd still say it's worth checking [...]

our fourth mix of the season is admittedly a little weak...probably wouldn't throw this one on at a christmas party, but it's still a good listen for decorating the tree & wrapping presents & baking cookies & shit...a few standouts include songs from feist, william bell, rufus thomas & a young luther vandross...the luther track, in fact, is a straight up jam, & probably would have fit a little better on a more upbeat mix, but whatever...check it out. download: the leather canary xmas mix #4 [...]

The big news around these parts is we will be leaving these parts. For Thanksgiving , The Duchess, Duke Jr. and I are flying back to the Midwest. To stay at my parents house on the Mississippi River . To get me (and you all) in the mood for my time at the river, here are 30 " river " songs, and 3 " Mississippi " songs (1 overlap) and one named after the woman who is named after my hometown. Some you've heard here before, some you haven't. [...]

spent the weekend in michigan for a wedding & on the way home yesterday i was browsing through this weekend's issue of the reader & noticed that i missed a lot more going on in chicago than i thought... i knew aesop rock was playing the metro on thursday & rilo kiley were at the riv on saturday, but there were also some weekend performances that caught me by surprise... erykah badu was at crobar thursday night (crobar?), friday night saw bill callahan at the lakeshore theater, [...]

Jorma Kaukonen is one of the world most gifted acoustic guitar players. His new album Stars In My Crown is a celebration of the less-is-more concept: select a Gibson from his extensive collection and just start playing. Recorded in Nashville with his Hot Tuna Barry Mitterhoff and seasoned veterans like Byron House on upright bass the album is a breathtaking journey through bluegrass, gospel classics and a couple of originals. Just listen to their version of Johnny Cash ' When The Man Comes Around . [...]
