Blogging at the crossroads of coverage and folk music makes for a venn diagram audience: some folks come for the ethnography, others come because they see what we do here at Cover Lay Down as somewhere between a reclamation and repudiation of the popular. And though both blogwatching indie hipsters and purist folkfans claim to represent outsider's canons, the mere singularity of our existence suggests there's not a strong overlap in experience or taste between these groups outside of our little node. Recognizing this allows us to predict a relatively large familiarity gap [...]

It's been a long, busy weekend, and it'll be a long night, too, with end-of-term grading due in the morning and a thick stack of final exams to go through first. I've got a great Covered in Kidfolk post half-drafted, complete with a contest give-away for Putumayo Kids' new acoustic lullaby CD, but it will have to wait; for now, here's a taste of Valentine's past, originally posted in 2008, to remind you to start making plans for next Monday. I spent all [...]

Recently voted as having Australia's finest festival atmosphere and crowd , you are guaranteed (at least) a great time without the douche bags over a weekend at Playground Weekender . Held at the Del Rio Riverside Resort, Wiseman's Ferry, over the 6-8th of February it is your chance to experience music immersed in landscape. It would probably be a whole lotta fun. I'm pretty excited myself. The lineup includes the following: Primal Scream It's been nine years since their last visit down under. Fingers crossed its worth the wait. [...]

When I started this blog well over 18 months ago I was buzzing. Summer was on the way and I was in an amazing new city that I felt ready to get to know. The posts have been few and far between as has the creative input... however. It's what goes on behind the scenes that count; it's the desire, drive and sheer passion for music that keeps the dream alive. Groovenuts has announcements coming up and a big cup of makeover. So much great local talent in Perth at the moment, so much great talent the world over! We [...]

It's a lazy Saturday in Chicago. The skies are blue and the winds are still. The first day of the year when you can go outside in shorts and a t-shirt and feel the sun spilling warmth on your face; a slight chill in the air and the ground swollen with melted snow to remind you that it's not quite summer yet. I live for days like this. Good days to lay around or head out into the sun. Better yet, with someone else. I heard this song and thought, yah, I'd like to do that. What are [...]

Ask and you shall receive, here is a mix of sad sack songs. Although it is the day AFTER valentines day now, as all emo kids know, heartbreak can be a 365 days a year affair. Fiona Apple - Paper Bag John Lennon - I'm Losing You Kate Nash - Dickhead Jose Gonzalez - Love Will Tear Us Apart The Wrens - Happy LEVY - So Hard [...]

I spent all morning trying to script a post about songs which struggle with the infinite and indescribably complex mysteries of love. The idea was to celebrate this complexity, and acknowledge as valid the stuff that often holds us back from putting a name to what we feel, lest we call it wrong and mess everything up. But every time I try to put words to love, things fall apart. Love's like that, I think. I guess that was the point, after all. Instead, in anticipation [...]

The following created a pretty entertaining comment thread on a Joy Division Myspace bulletin. I figured I'd share stupidity and a few of the comments it yielded... Shortlist magazine has revealed that distributors in the US, working the new Anton Corbijn film Control , asked if Joy Division could perform live at the US premiere. Says Joy Division and New Order bassist Peter Hook (pictured): "Someone from the film's US distributor's office phoned up saying that the New York premiere was on 25 [...]

Stars - credit This week was hell at school for me, but I still wanted to write about some of the great new releases that came out. This week featured a fair amount of folk/indie rock, but it really had a large amount of good music in general. Probably the biggest release of the week was from Iron & Wine , with a CD titled The Shepard's Dog . For Sam Beam's newest CD, he went with a full band and a full sound. Getting more popular as the days go [...]
Try it on for size! Sample new releases this week! photo of Devendra Banhart by me It's another wallet-buster of week for new releases, particularly if you're a fan of the indie folk and roots based music. There are reissues out from legendary folkers Pentangle and Karen Dalton and a whole bunch of new releases from artists either considered "new indie folk" or at least influenced by them, like Devendra Banhart, Iron & Wine, Cave Singers, Sir Richard Bishop, Jose Gonzalez, Loney, Dear, Tuung, and Two Gallants. [...]

In celebration of his new album, Jose Gonzalez is gracing North American shores for an extensive tour that stretches from the end of September all the way through December. Gonzalez is also set to make appearances on Late Night With Conan O'Brien (September, 28th), and Jimmy Kimmel Live (October, 11th). I'm always amazed at Jimmy Kimmel's ability to get good musical guests despite his somewhat questionable hosting skills. Oh well, I can always wait till 10 minutes before the show is over to tune in. Ha! Jose's new album is titled In Our Nature , [...]
So all I have been listening to for the last week or so is the new Beirut and the new Jose Gonzales (with a little bit of White Rabbits and the new Kanye thrown in there for good measure).. So as most of you know, ever since my Thom Yorke catastrophe I don't really leak music at all. So below are two harder to find songs from both Jose and Beirut. Please buy both new records when they come out cause they are both really great. Beirut - Interior of a Dutch [...]

One of my favorite singer-songwriters of all time, José Gonzales is about to begin touring in the United States. It is my duty to make sure you catch one of his shows, because this is one artist that you don't want to miss. He is an amazing guitar player, and he is very reminiscent of Nick Drake. Veneer is one of my favorite albums of 2005, and the EP's that he has put out are just as
