It may be that I'm just not looking in the right places, but it's not often that I see the genres of folk and EDM merged together, nor did I ever really have the desire to. But Mojo Filter has changed that with his edit of/tribute to Swedish folk group Junip's "I'm Alright" . If the name Junip sounds only vaguely familiar, you may be more familiar with their lead singer, Jose Gonzalez, known for his solo covers of "Heartbeat" and "Teardrop" , among others. On this track, Mojo Filter takes the airy sweetness of Gonzalez's voice [...]
![[Introducing] – Philippe Nash](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3905368_lg.jpg)
Tweet From the very beginning of "Singing Saints Darling" , a flashback of the 1970s came rushing over me. Having been compared to Bon Iver , José González and Bob Dylan , you can hear how Philippe Nash 's vintage sound incorporates influences of today. From Brighton in the UK, Nash describes his music as "folk/gospel". His vocals have that airy quality that sounds almost choir-like and ethereal. While I've never been one to listen to gospel music [...]

Artwork by: Sougwen Chung [RSS Readers: See post to listen to audio] "Play Pencil Pimp !!" is what I kept yelling at the recent Sepalcure show in NYC, today they got Pitchfork's Best New Music on their debut Self Titled album, we've supported their sound from the beginning, I couldn't be happier for them, you can buy their LP here . HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Usually when you say Jose Gonzalez a girl in the room will scream and say "OMG I love him!" I do [...]

You may feel as though there's already enough love in your heart for all things Scandinavian, but if you can clear the clutter from an atrium here or a ventricle there, you'd be wise to usher in Ane Brun or perhaps more precisely, It All Starts With One. Produced by the inconceivably gifted Tobias Fröberg (responsible for the lavish orchestration that gushes throughout) and backed by a slew of influential artists from that ethereal land that hangs over central Europe, Brun's latest work is a painstakingly crafted, achingly heartbreaking affair, and one [...]

Our close friends at Radio Magnetic have announced they are moving all of their content onto the excellent Mixcloud platform for streaming. Over the last 10 years The Magnetic collective have established themselves as one of the most forward thinking musical stations responsible for the first plays for acts such as Mylo , FOUND , Hudson Mohawke , Dimlite , Fat Freddy's Drop , Alex Smoke , Vector Lovers and many others. By moving the content to Mixcloud they will now open up their content [...]

valentines day is bullshit and so i am protesting it. this short mix is for the heartbroken, angry and/or lonely, cause you deserve some love today even more than the rest of 'em. i am sure i stand in stupendous company and someday it will all feel better! and anyway...i'd rather get a mixtape from a stranger that speaks to my soul than a dozen stereotypical red roses from any 'ol whatsohis/hersoface any day (although, a handful of tulips can be quite enticing. just saying). ...somebody out there *must* be listening... i *am* listening. [...]

My favorite album from last week, good experimental electronica to write to from Gold Panda's mixmaster Derwin : Gold Panda Gold Panda: "You" [ Buy ] The experimental : New York outfit Mice Parade plays around with various genres on their well-titled album What It Means to Be Left-Handed , an interesting, although perhaps not start-to-finish compelling, release. The first track plays with African instrumentation and [...]

I can't help but profile a more familiar name this week. Junip is the non-solo project of folk voice José González. González is joined by Elias Araya and Tobias Winterkorn, and their soon-to-be released, five years in the making album, Fields , is a wonderful breath of floating folk breeze. I've spent some time with the album this afternoon and between González's characteristic light-toned words and a rich instrumentation scope that includes acoustic guitar, organ and Moog, Fields is an exemplary work of "modern folk". [...]

Music gets everywhere these days, the next step after synchronisation into adverts, films is probably subliminal. Beauty of this is that it his the power to hit you where you least fucking expect it. The emotional heft of these moments is paydirt I'm sure. Moment in question links to the recent video game experience, Red Dead Redemption. One of the cutscenes unfurls like the heavens into a previously unreleased song by Jose Gonzales. Okay, I didn't actually play it, I can't play videogames anymore due to addiction problems, would get more [...]

Junip , for those who aren't aware, is the side project of Swedish folk star José González. Aliyas Araya (drums) & Tobias Winterkorn (synth) make up the rest of the group. After a five year absence and with José making a commercial name for himself the trio are back together once again. After two previous EP's their debut full length offering - 'Fields' - is set for a September 13th release. Until then you can listen to the album below. Enjoy.

Day three. It's sunny. The mud has baked nicely dry and its firm enough to sit on, as many folk do as Jose Gonzales's band Junip take the main stage for a spot of Spanish guitar laden electro from Sweden. Indoors it's instrumental band Errors , a pounding mix of synths, guitar and drums. We've seen a few like this recently. They are excellent but instrumental just doesn't do it for me... they need a vocalist. Wonder if Mark E Smith is still in the [...]
The debut seven song EP from mysterious lo-fi band Guards dropped in its mastered form on July 21st via Bandcamp . Other than a series of tweets from fellow 60s revivalists CULTS (who feature on one of the tracks), very little is known about the band. Perhaps the trend of having an unsearchable one word band name and making surfer garage punk is an increasing trend, which sees Guards join Tennis as the latest bands to sprout up out of nowhere to possess an immeasurable internet following. The music is screeching garage punk (with sound not far [...]
Lovely mix of tunes from The Holy Roman Army taking in Kanye, Boxcutter, Jose Gonzales, James Blake, Bonobo, Janelle Monae, Stereolab and more. Full track listing here .
Jose Gonzales' long-time band Junip is going to release their first ever full-length album in September. The album is called Fields , and is being preceded by an EP, called Rope & Summit . The EP is free (see link below), and it's pretty darn good. If you already know and like Gonzales, then you'll know exactly what to expect - lots of gorgeous nylon-stringed guitar and shadowy vocals, wrapped up in complex and beautiful compositions. The main difference here is that his normally spare production gets turned up a notch with a full band [...]
