From the surprise new EP from Josh Ritter of "immediate" and "small" songs that he is excited to share; I am excited to receive. " It's always a fun process, and what you're trying to do is balance the art form of the recording with the excitement of recording it. I think there's a certain spark when something's written and it rolls off the tongue easily, and you can always hear the person's excitement when it's happening ." [ Josh, via ] That's one of [...]

Out of nowhere, singer-songwriter Josh Ritter has announced a new EP, Bringing in the Darlings , as BPM points out. Taken from a writing session for his upcoming LP, and then recorded in Brooklyn in just three days, the six-track effort is described by Ritter as his "version of lullabies." Each track makes use of the word "darling" - hence the title - and it's especially unmissable in the opener "Why". An unusually sparse song from the folk songwriter known for his often grand stylings, the track features a few well-plucked guitars and a fair amount [...]
No matter how adventurous music becomes, there will always be room for a man and his guitar. "Why," the first track off Josh Ritter's forthcoming Bringing in the Darlings EP, is a salute to the permanence of such simplicity. Across a softly-plucked acoustic guitar, Ritter takes on the role of the eternal optimist, raising rhetorical and seemingly obvious questions about why his subject would do anything less than seek out the positive. Known for detail-driven narratives, this compact track functions more as a bedside lullaby. "Why spend your only life waiting to do what you [...]

03 "Louis Collins" is a traditional murder ballad that's been making the rounds in music for almost a hundred years now. There are versions by many artists floating around, but here are my two favorites. First, Tin Horn Prayer screeches their way through the song with shouted vocals and stomping, appropriate of the subject matter. Tin Horn Prayer - Louis Collins Josh Ritter 's version is a bit different. He combined the tale of Louis Collins and that of Stackalee into [...]

Attending the Cabinet of Wonders is one of the smartest things you can do in New York City and definitely one of my favorites. Created by Wesley Stace (aka John Wesley Harding) , the Cabinet features his friends in music, literature, and comedy. And believe me, he has pretty amazing friends. Located at the beautiful City Winery , these shows are my one opportunity to feel like a classy grownup. This weekend's sold out Cabinet was pretty spectacular, featuring music from John Wesley Harding , Spinto Band , Punch Brothers , [...]
This album by Justin Bailey has been a long time coming. I've been lucky enough to hear bits and pieces of the Rust before it came out, but the final product is impressive. Bailey is proud of his Nashville roots, which shows in his smokey voice, alternative country and folk influences. He has lately spent [...]

Last night our Jen rang in the new year with Josh Ritter and the Royal City Band in Northampton, MA. And this happened. Thank you to @goodinthestacks for capturing this moment. Happy new year!
Nikki Lane – Gone, Gone, Gone. Download "Gone, Gone, Gone" (mp3). Nikki Lane has a voice that belts like Loretta Lynn's on this debut album of delectable, honky tonk country. This EP was released as a precursor to her full-length album, Walk of Shame, which was also released this year. This shortplayer includes the two best songs from Walk of Shame, "Gone, Gone, Gone" and "Coming Home to You," but it also includes two great additional tracks – "Western Bound" and "Down to the Wire." Milo Greene – The Hello Sessions. Download "1957" (mp3). The Hello [...]

This year I have seen Josh Ritter play eleven times in five different states. I have traveled over 5000 miles to accomplish this. Now while some might consider this to be crazy, I at least know that my fellow fans at the Ruckus would not. The first show of the year was the Valentine's Day Brawl in NYC with Cheryl and Tiffiny. And it was electrifying. It featured a massive slow dance to "Kathleen," complete with a disco ball. Need I say more? March brought John Wesley Harding/Wesley Stace's "Cabinet of [...]

![Review: Zaac Pick, Whitewater EP [2011]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3932870_lg.jpg)
Zaac Pick is an emerging talent in the Canadian indie-folk scene. Former guitarist of the indie rock group Doubting Paris, Pick first earned critical acclaim as a solo artist for his 2009 debut EP, Fierce Wind , including the top selection in Vancouver's Shore 104FM Song Search, as well as spots in various television shows. Now, after two years of touring (including a double header at SXSW this year), he has released a new four-track EP, Whitewater . Whitewater shows off Pick's knack for melody, pairing his warm, expressive voice with layers [...]
It's hard to believe that 2011 is almost over. It seemed like not really that long ago that we were putting together our Best Songs of 2010 mixtapes (now working on Vol. IV for 2011) - which by the way, are still up and running (a few missing mp3 links, but 90% operational), and well [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Well, Josh Ritter is pretty awesome, probably good live. I am sure that your grandparents would enjoy Rammsteins greatest hits, so there is that. Isn't Amy Winehouse dead? BAM! Bet you were expecting a Best of 2011 list, yeah? Well I don't got time for that (YET)! No...this is where I acknowledge all the great stuff I missed in 2010. 'Cause it doesn't get any more rock n roll than to talk about shit that's over a year old. Write that down in your How to Be Rock N Roll notebooks. Anyway, the last time I wrote this list , I spent quite a while talking about how there isn't enough time in one year to listen to all the potentially great releases and put [...]
