Proud new papa Josh Ritter released a new song this morning, along with word that he's releasing a new record called The Beast In Its Tracks on March 5th. I hear such beautiful regeneration all through this song, and that feels vibrantly good to hear, and to understand. "I wrote and recorded this record in the 18 months after my marriage had fallen apart," Josh writes. "All heartbreak is awful – my broken heart wasn’t unique. But writing these songs was helping me get through the night and [...]

. O EP será lançado oficialmente no dia 13 de [...]

By definition, receiving the MacArthur Fellowship "genius" grant always comes as a surprise: candidates for the five year, no-strings-attached award are nominated through a secretive and anonymous process, and most tend not to know they have even been nominated until that call comes the day of the announcement. The five-year award, for "exceptional creativity, as demonstrated through a track record of significant achievement, and manifest promise for important future advances" is a bit like a Nobel Prize for general awesomeness, socio-culturally speaking, and those who win come from myriad fields: geriatricians, filmmakers, authors, historians, and social services [...]

Somehow I had managed to go all summer without seeing Josh Ritter . Thankfully I was able to fill my quota with a road trip to a trio show in Ithaca before the summer ended. Side note to those thinking about driving between NYC and Ithaca , it is far and there is not much in between. If you are going to see Josh Ritter though, it will be completely worth it. The trio shows, featuring Zack Hickman and Mark Erelli, hold a special place in my heart. They are often in more intimate venues and [...]
For the third installment in our lists about time, I'm taking it down a notch and focusing in on songs about the seconds, minutes, and hours that we could use to be productive if we weren't listening to songs about seconds, minutes, and hours. Time is a topic I've wanted to tackle [...]

Last weekend was spent exploring the south rim of the Grand Canyon. It was an experience . This mixtape came about when on the last night, I hiked about a mile down the canyon with some friends to watch the sun set from a different vantage point. We agreed to take some time to listen to music and enjoy the view. Lissie and I both chose Josh Ritter's "Lark" in a moment of musical perfection. These songs capture the awakening, the astonishment, and the insignificance I felt throughout the trip and I'm just as excited to share them as [...]

Last week, one of my favorite artists came through Colorado for not one but two shows. This rarely happens in these parts- the nearest big city is an eight hour drive from Denver. And that city is Omaha, Albuquerque, or Salt Lake, so I rarely get the chance to double up on shows. But through some rare circumstance, Josh Ritter and the Royal City Band played both Chautauqua and The Mishawaka . It had been close to a year since I’d seen these folks play at all, so I was beyond excited at this prospect [...]

As I tend to do at the last possible moment, I started organizing my calendar for July yesterday. And wow. There are SO. MANY. SHOWS. I want to be at next month, that I will have to clone myself. Possibly twice over. Anyway, I’ve got a seriously impressive list forming here that I wanted to share with you. I know we all won’t be at every gig, but there has to be a couple hear that you can’t miss. July [...]

I woke up the other day thinking we were friends. I wasn’t even thinking of you, but the world looked like it did when we were friends: curvy, elegant, designed by someone who didn’t understand gravity. When I cut open a lemon, it broke in half like it would have those days when I knew you were out there, in a different time zone, probably still sleeping, one foot dropped outside the covers. When I squeezed half a lemon in a glass of water, three seeds fell in even though I was sure I’d carved them out over the sink. [...]
