The first recording of Joshua Redman's 1994 quartet, featuring pianist Brad Mehldau, reissued. In 1994, Joshua Redman was the "It Musician" in jazz - a young guy getting a ton of press because he was a biracial guy who had gone to Harvard and decided to pass up Yale Law School for the life of a jazz musician. Plus, he was the son of the great tenor saxophonist Dewey Redman and took the top prize in the Thelonious Monk Saxophone Competition in 1991. Oh, and the guy could...

What a bomb week came and went. It's worth streaming the new Bon Iver, new Fucked Up, and some twisty remixes from masters The Orb and Krusha. And, what the hell, respect to Easy Star All Star. Calgary - Bon Iver Polynomial C (The Orb remix) - Aphex Twin Morning Thought - Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. Belonging - Joshua Redman World Looking In - Morcheeba We Used To Wait (Krusha Remix) - Arcade Fire A Little Death - Fucked [...]

James Farm is the collaborative effort of four incredible jazz musicians— saxophonist Joshua Redman, pianist Aaron Parks, bassist Matt Penman and drummer Eric Harland. "Coax" opens with a steady piano from Aaron Parks, Matt Penman's heavy-handed bass line - also heard throughout - and a tinge of a militaristic sound on Eric Harland's drums. All of this paves the way for Redman's quite melodic saxophone to enter the piece. It's the perfect way to start off this collaboration for all of musicians are at the forefront giving them ample opportunity to [...]
Everybody Wants to Be a Cat: Disney Jazz, Vol. 1 is enjoyable for kids and adults alike.

Well you asked for it. Last week we announced on Twitter - and also right here on HT - that we were taking suggestions for this weeks Cover Wars and we are men and women of our words. We went with ChefRobD's suggestion to take a look at covers of The Crunge by Led Zeppelin. The Crunge was released in 1973 on Houses Of The Holy and combines odd-time signatures with a James Brown-esque funk riff, a pairing that as it turns out is a match made in heaven. [...]

Joshua Redman : I Had A King [ purchase ] Here's another example of the fruit not falling far at all from the tree. Joshua Redman, the brilliant free-form saxophonist, learned his craft at his father Dewey Redman's knee. Dewey was known for his solo free-form/bebop recordings as well as collaborations with Ornette Coleman and Keith Jarrett, especially, as well as with Pat Metheny, Paul Motian, and Charlie Haden. I treated you to a song by Joshua Redman ( St. Thomas ) during Saints week. [...]
An excellent contemporary collection of Disney songs done in the jazz format.

Joshua Redman : St. Thomas [ purchase ] Poor St. Thomas. (To be more specific, poor St. Thomas the Apostle, not to be confused with St. Thomas Aquinas, or St. Thomas More, or St. Thomas of Becket, or any of the other dozen or so Thomases who are also Roman Catholic saints.) Thomas had a long and productive saintly career. He is said to have travelled to India and introduced Christianity there (er, well, maybe not so productive there). But we know him best from one [...]
Herbie Hancock, ft. Wayne Shorter : Both Sides Now [ purchase ] Paul Desmond : Song to a Seagull [ purchase ] Joshua Redman : I Had a King [ purchase ] Let's check out some jazzy Joni covers, yeah? Here are three that focus on the saxophone. I used to play this amazing instrument, but sadly, none of the songs I ever [...]

"Stately" is an adjective I rarely use to describe an album, but it fits Allen Toussaint's new album, The Bright Mississippi , like a glove. The Bright Mississippi is a special album, demanding multiple listens to truly get the tapestry of American music – Ellington inspired jazz, r&b, Creole, ragtime – that it weaves with such effortless cool. It's an album that contains the full experience that is life – its joys, sorrows, delights and hardships. That is to say, it's an album with soul. Toussaint, [...]
Joshua Redman : Tenor and soprano saxophones Reuben Rogers : Acoustic bass Gregory Hutchinson : Drums Heard Joshua Redman playing trio in Stockholm a couple of summers ago and loved it and his new CD "Compass" is about my favourite album right now so it's great to have this show to share thanks to the good offices of the BBC. Poised, elegant and passionate playing from all three of the guys and an especially good reading of that wonderful ballad, "Autumn in New York" make this a real tr e [...]

You wouldn't expect a jazz show at the Highline Ballroom to be packed on a Wednesday night with people fighting over tables, but that was exactly what happened at Joshua Redman's Double Trio performance last week. The concert featured little more than a horn player backed by a monster rhythm section, and that was enough. In fact, he was brave just to stand on that stage, framed by a pair of young, in-demand bassists; Larry Grenadier, with his broad movements and low end, on his right, [...]
Tonight, tenor saxophonist extraordinaire Joshua Redman takes the stage with two of the best drummers I've ever had the pleasure of seeing: Gregory Hutchinson and Brian Blade . Also joining Redman for the second of two nights at the Highline are bassists Reuben Rogers and Larry Grenadine. Here's a taste of Redman with Blade on Drums and Sam Yahel on Keys: Redman blogged, with a heavy dose of humility, about the upcoming gigs on his website: On the plane to New [...]

Joshua Redman : Tenor saxophone Pat Metheny : Electric guitars Christian McBride : Acoustic bass Billy Higgins : Drums This is really quite something...a truly great show, beautifully recorded and a wonderful snap shot of a classic jazz line up. Feel free to leave your usual observations on mis-spellings and general complaints and grips in the comments section but any thanks you wish to offer should go to the extremely wonderful Jay Serafin, for [...]

Joshua Redman : Tenor and soprano saxophones, Hammond B3 Sam Yahel : Hammond B3 and keyboards Jeff Ballard : Drums This tremendous session just arrived from our pal Stephen over in Canada and it's another grab from the wonderful CBC radio. Recorded at the excellent Vancouver Jazz Festival this is a great sounding recording of a great band. 01-news-from-the-front1 [...]

Kurt Rosenwinkel : Electric guitar Brad Mehldau : Acoustic piano Joshua Redman : Tenor saxophone Larry Grenadier : Acoustic bass Ali Jackson : Drums Only two tracks of this show but very much worth grabbing in my opinion. Everyone sounds fantastic and you can never have too much Kurt anyway. 01-kurt-rosenwinkel-use-of-lig ht [...]

Joshua Redman : Tenor and soprano saxophones Peter Martin : Acoustic piano Christopher Thomas : Acoustic bass Brian Blade : Drums Found this great session lurking at the back of my hard drive over the week end. I'd forgotten how good it is so I had to share it with you. "Georgia" is a peach! 01-blues-on-sunday 02-switch-blade 03-bands-introduction [...]

Joshua Redman : Tenor and soprano saxophones Reuben Rogers : Acoustic bass Ali Jackson jnr : Drums I heard this very trio last summer at the Fashing Jaz Club in Stockholm during their fantastic jazz festival and I loved them, so relaxed but still burning away. You can hear this concert over at NPR if you prefer but be warned...there's some seriously lame chat between tunes to contend with. The radio presenter takes a fairly odd line with Joshua and I find [...]
Springtime in north Texas means outdoor music festivals. One of the most exciting is the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival , that just closed last weekend. It's music food and art, all wrapped up in a two-and-a-half-day weekend in Denton , Texas. I kinda think of Denton as a little Austin. The University of North Texas music programs draw thousands of talented artists every year. So the large population of students from UNT and other notably [...]
