Centuries ago, Academy writers fine-tuned the art of leisure in all its manifestations–opium haze lounging, harem collecting, scrapbooking. Here they pass that knowledge onto you; the result is a highly-polished calendar of events called The Problem of Leisure. Angora Holly Polo: Nintendo Night at Lion's Lair! I don't know about you guys, but I'm going for the "mystery box"! Widowers' Mike Marchant dropped us a line, and he says: "Music will be made [...]

Get It? A "Bender"? And now...a week in lists: If a great life is determined by the sum of a person's accomplishments, then Modern Drunkard Magazine has a list of forty things a man should do before he dies, as related to alcohol and drunkenness. According to the author, if one can attest to having completed every task on this list, they have lived a full, enriched life. The list, by the way, includes spending a night in the drunk tank, opening and closing a bar (first guy in, last guy out), juicing on [...]
How confusing is that title? No, not at all? Ok, I'll explain. Today marks the glorious entrance of a dear college friend's birth unto the world. I haven't seen much of her since moving to NYC (*tear), but at least I have her fantab site to keep the hunger pangs at bay. So in honor of Julie Gong's birthiversary, each song here is going to have little innuendos and tales associated with them that remind me of the mischief and magic times spent [...]
The Good: Ratatat - "Shiller"; It looks like Ratatat are blasting off into the future for their next release LP3 which will feature this song, a song that I can't listen to without dreaming of sci-fi movies. It's an easy link, with high pitched synth sounds being thrust on us in a cinematic fashion, it seems like it's destined to be the soundtrack from some Sc-Fi channel original. I can already

Despite the cold isolation of winter, there is always something more coming...another spin around the sun. We've been counting the days for warmer weather here in Philly and New York. A glimpse of spring showed its face yesterday but was blown away by strong winds and evening rain showers, leaving us with a chilly, yet sunny, Wednesday. In the hopes of less ravaging weather soon to come, we pulled together a mixtape to coax spring back out of hiding. It ranges from Jack Penate's happy, clappy, and jaunty "Second, Minute or Hour" to the light [...]

It just gets worse and worse, doesn't it? I'm sure a third of you are wondering to what level of depravity TVD will sink this week, another third saw this round-house punch coming since Monday when this sick salad began to be tossed--and the rest of you are making that infamous Lee Harvey Oswald face as TVD loads this morning...But fight it, I can't--these songs kill in their 1970's FM radio, AOR way. (That is, permanently downloaded and cached.) Once while taking a late night cab from the airport into downtown San Francisco, "Lights" came on the [...]

We've all been there. You're out with your friends and then, out of the blue Come Sail Away comes on your iPod. Everyone looks at you like "What the hell man?!" All you can really say is "I don't know, my brother must have been messin' with my playlists. I *DON'T* listen to this shit". Of course, they don't believe you. You can blame it on your bro, the wife, even the damn cat and they aren't going to believe you. Now they know what you [...]

It's been a little while since I've done one of these, so here's a couple to catch up for lost time: This song you would have heard if you've turned on a TV recently. Tristan Prettyman has a fantastic cover of it: New Soul (Yael Naïm) - Tristan Prettyman New Soul - Yael Naïm Again, I think that Matt Nathanson is a bit of a prat, [...]

After a three week hiatus, The Sunday Spotlight it back, this time with a MISB favorite from last year, Saint Bernadette ., who released their debut album In the Ballroom in October (read about it here ). Instead of recording in the ballroom this time though, the pair has chose a more traditional studio located in the same town to put together the five tracks on the EP. The first track ( In Between ) feels like it could be a track that was dropped from the album. It's got that smooth jazzy [...]

Not mine, but his What a long, strange trip it has been... I think it was last Sunday evening that it realy hit me, when I had already been in Vegas for four days (or four nights, as it seems more appropriate to measure Vegas time in terms of nights). I was wandering The Strip , on my way to somewhere, when suddenly I came unmoored. The ching-ching-ching-whoop of the slots, the all-permeating stench of stale cigarette smoke mixed with cheap air freshener, the [...]
I love these Virgin Pendolino trains, or is this a Voyager? What's the difference anyways? On the way back from our brief visit to Manchester where we managed to get a bit of gigging in. The Departure of Northampton fame were playing the Oxford Zodiac Academy Carling thing (does anyone mind if I just refer to it as the Cardiac?) a few weeks ago, and rather than do the easy thing of just going round the corner I decided that it would be easier (and much lazier) to rejig our work, social and rail commitments so that we [...]

Its time to thrown down cardboard boxes and click the play button on your boombox, and walk around the streets of (Insert your locality here). Its the sophomore version of The Wednesday Rewind. First on our BASF mixed tape we go "rickrolling" with Rick Astley. When I pop on a Rick Astley song I always ask myself, why does this guy sound like a black man (tell me if I am wrong). I must say though the song is so catchy. Next up, I bring you another Brit by the name of Roderick Stewart, better know at Rod the Bod. This is probably my [...]
Last week it was Bobby Baccaliere and this week it's Bobby Barker. The beloved game show host, who for 35 years looked after "The Price Is Right," and who's been hosting television shows for 50 years (50 years!), broadcast his final episode this week. It wasn't the tearful goodbye it could've been (it did however feature a contestant doing a faceplant which is... Last week it was Bobby Baccaliere and this week it's Bobby Barker. Journey - Don't Stop Believin' A collective "Huh??" could be heard across America on Sunday evening as The Sopranos came to an abrupt but appropriate close. Onion Rings? Journey? Parallel parking? A hard cut to black? What was David Chase thinking? Well, I have to say ... I absolutely loved the ending. The Sopranos was quite possibly my favorite television program of all time, and this was definitely one of my favorite final scenes of any program ever. I think most who would disagree with me never really watched the series. Or [...]

This is one series finale that requires a good night's sleep (or two poor ones like I just had.) The ambiguous ending which has Sopranos fans everywhere tied in knots , needs a tiny bit of distance to be appreciated, and in the rear-view mirror, looking at all the conspiracy theory wreckage from viewers, it's hard not to appreciate just what creator David Chase has done. He's essentially given everyone the ending they want, provided they're willing to look. Everyone's beat me to recapping , and dissecting the use of Journey's "Don't Stop [...]
