The folks behind the legendary Solid Steel radio show have made a point of pushing the envelope in more ways than most DJs, whether that's through championing typically eclectic selections or by delving into the world of audio visual wizardry. This week, Solid Steel veteran DK is kindly offering up a little of both, giving you what the folks at Ninja Tune describe as "a treat for eyes as well as your ears with his full on audio visual mix Cymatic Frequencies ." According to Team Ninja, Cymatic Frequencies is "packed [...]

First there was Aphex Twin . Then there was Magnetic Man . The likes of Jamie xx , Four Tet and Vitalic followed. As everything turns 'doo-lally in a rather pleasant and unpredictable way' down on Bloc Weekend HQ, the final, predictably startling headliner has been revealed as Laurent Garnier , closing the weekend's hedonistic proceedings alongside Matthew Dear . The (practically) full, stage-by-stage, or curator-by-curator line up now looks something like: Union: Magnetic Man * Beardyman * Claude Von Stroke * [...]

In a lot of ways it's strange that dubstep is still around and even stranger that it's getting better. Fans of dance music are notoriously fickle in their listening habits which means a scene can be born and forgotten about in the space of a few months. The fact that people are still paying attention to dubstep five years down the road is significant. One reason for the genre's longevity and current good health is the drive producers have to bring something new to the table with their creations. Someone who knows all about the importance of developing [...]

An End to 2010 Mix (Mixed by Etch) So this is my first post on the new site and I am using it as a sort of introduction as well as a my fav's of 2010 sort of thing, as well as giving people an idea of what to expect from me in the future (in terms of the sort of music I'll be reviewing and writing about). A long time ago, when I was first reading music blogs, I became a fan of a circle of friends in Scotland. They are in their mid-thirties or so, grew up in the Brit-pop era and have "met" over the internet and sometimes even in person (!) due to their common love for groups like The Smiths and My Bloody Valentine and James. JC (a.k.a., The Vinyl Villain), is for me, someone who's blog I go back to again and again for music and personal reminiscences. And it is there that I learnt of ctel (a.k.a., Acid Ted) who's writing [...]

Joy Orbison's new single "BB" is already sold out. It was released on Doldrums and sold through Honest Jon's which only had a limited number of vinyls of the single. Now that its sold out the single and b-side 'Ladywell' are floating around online. You can listen to both...

Joy Orbison's been keeping us waiting for some new material and this second release on his own Doldrums imprint sees him deliver two of his finest moments to date. Both tracks follow a more straightforward house path than previous material but are awash with his trademark atmospherics and melodies. "BB" opens the 12 and a pitched down spoken sample leads us willingly into jackin' 4/4 territory with a hint of a chicago house vibe. "Ladywell" on the flip takes a slightly more laid back approach with squelchy funk synths wandering over a classic house style [...]

Joy Orbison DLDRMS 002 "BB" / "Ladywell" [Doldrums; 2010] Posted by Jason Cook on 29 November 2010 Released second on his co-run Doldrums label, Joy Orbison's latest record exhibits more of his thus far uninterrupted farsightedness in two six-minute tech-house tunes: "BB" and "Ladywell." The former is quite good, a simple crystalline 4/4 piece built of a dicey rhythm, a legato bass line that recalls, and advances beyond, AFX's less [...]
