Hey Marseilles celebrate their album release at Easy Street & Showbox this week photo by Christopher Nelson It's the Spring Fundraising Drive on KEXP all this week. ( Make a donation at: 206-903-5397 ) Right after you do that, there are plenty of good shows to pick from this week as we finish a short February and move on to March. We start with some hip-hop on [...]

photo by Jason Bergman While the other side of the country faces a heat wave, the weather in Seattle is looking good this week, which is a great reason to go see some local shows! Tuesday features shows from the Detroit Cobras at Neumo's and a quadruple billing of Love Battery, Chix Pack, Speedwobble, and Lost Puppy at Fun House. If you're looking for a musical way to celebrate independence on Wednesday, spend July 4th by going to see the Family 4th show with Pickwick at Gasworks Park or attend [...]

My fondness for Joy Wants Eternity has been in question since the first time I listened to them. I have often been accused of liking what some call "generic post-rock"; its actually one of the criticisms that I take to heart the most. In all honesty, I'm unsure what keeps pulling me in and listening with every album. Not as innovative as the bands that made it (the Big 4), they play a style of post-rock that's so simple uncomplicated that it may be one of the most genuine sounds I've heard. They're not showy or flashy, they're not in-your-face intense, but rather they [...]

Seattle's Joy Wants Eternity have released a quality album in ' The Fog Is Rising ' (download here or pick up the CD via Etsy ). The post rock five piece have been experimenting with instrumental chaos since forming in 2003, initially with a 15 strong line-up! The new record follows their 2007 debut LP 'You Who Pretend To Sleep' which drew comparisons to Mono, Mogwai and Explosions In the Sky. Take a listen to the new record's ambient post rock opener 'Our Backs Into The Wind'. Download audio file (Joy-Wants-Eternity-Our-Backs- Into-The-Wind.mp3) [...]

The Cumulus Festival is descending upon us fair-skinned fawns in cloud city this weekend. The enveloping experimentation of Seattle's best and dreariest post-rock outfits (with help from a few from PDX) will reverberate with equal parts spherical wash and ominous thunder throughout this meteorological nightmare of a town. The atmospheric conditions look to be flooded with dirge, and hazy intonation will precipitate from the heavens. It will be the sound from under the clouds ; hey, we should be sponsoring this thing! (Check our tag line.) . Both [...]
Post-Rock is Cold Dead Genre? (2004-???) Albums like F#A#(infinity) in 1998 by GY!BE, Young Team in 1997 by Mogwai, and The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place in 2003 by Explosions in the Sky have become the blueprints that many fledgling bands have used to sculpt their own sound. The fact that modern post-rock bands [...]

Written by Fense My love, how I miss thee. Were I capable of poetry, words would stream onto the page like none other. They would cover it front to back, emphasizing how I hate being away from your side each and every week, away from your scent and away from you arms. It is a curse. A travesty! And I am stricken. Love will make you do crazy things, like miss the Cumulus Music Festival, which debuts on the streets of Seattle tomorrow and features Beast, Please Be Still [...]
I have to admit that I was going to do something totally different for this week's mix. Then I found this song from Gang Gang Dance and knew that the mix just needed 9 supporting tracks. Gang Gang Dance - House Jam Junius - At The Age Of Decay pacificUV - Need Joy Wants Eternity - Existances Rust El Ten Eleven - Lorge Underworld - Bigmouth Unkle - Hold My Hand Fields - The Death [...]

Joy Wants Eternity - From Embrace To Embrace pg. lost - Yes I Am Eluvium - Prelude For Time Feelers

As I have been sifting through the site's promo backlog, there are only a few bands that really stand out and are worth writing about. Joy Wants Eternity is one of the best. Their new album and first full-length is entitled You Who Pretend To Sleep and it is one of my favorite albums in quite awhile. If you enjoyed Junius , whom I posted about earlier, then you will really enjoy this band. Taking their key from Explosions In The Sky and a slew of up and coming [...]
Shane Berry of The Divorce, Crocodile Cafe 6/30/07 (final show!) photo by Allison Harger Sadly, after seven years, Seattle must say goodbye to The Divorce , who performed their final shows last Saturday at the Crocodile, one for the kids and one for the boozers. The band, who were voted best pop/rock band for the 2006 Seattle Weekly Music Awards and who played KEXP's 3rd Annual Yule Benefit , promise that you haven't heard the last of them yet, as their members all "have plans [...]

Dimanche, [...]

If there is one thing I am a sucker for it is a big, gnarly post-rock song. Lately it seems that the genre has been getting a teeny bit crowded and it is becoming a little more of a challenge to find artists that are truly striving for their own sound. Joy Wants Eternity is a five-piece from Seattle, Washinton that eschews bass and opts for guitars, Rhodes piano and drums. The song posted here is from their new album due out May 22 entitled You Who Pretend to Sleep . It captures the [...]
