The Monroe Transfer are offering up two free downloads. Nick Gill, guitarist of the Monroe Transfer explains the tracks "We were asked to record something for one side of a split 103 EP; sadly, that's now not going to happen due to financial horrors. Maybe it sounds like it's a benefit for Knitting Factory because of how we worded it, but whatever. That's not what it is. The ex-Unicorn/now- Islands lead Nick Diamonds is curating a benefit concert for New York Cares and it just so happens to be going on at Knitting Factory. As part of the organization's Winter Wishes program (now in its 20th year), Diamonds has put together a line-up that includes David Cross, Fred Armisen, Marnie Stern , Conrad from Trail of Dead , Leona Naess , Despot and a few others. It's [...]
When Bowie sang that line on his 1972 album The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars , he was echoing the fantasy of many a teenage boy or girl. The children wanted to grow up to be garbagemen or astronauts or superheros, but at a certain age that changed and most teens would have given anything to make that wild mutation as a rock 'n roll star. However, only a precious few ever get to live out that dream. While Bono , and Sting and Chris Martin [...]
Inca Ore - Joy There's a little bit of a buzz around internet chat boards (you know, the ones that have been listening to an album six months before a mention surfaces elsewhere) about Inca Ore (aka Californian Eva Saelens of the group Jackie O-Motherfucker). After a dozen or so self-released CD-Rs, Birthday of Bless You has been released on Not Not Fun and it may just be one of the better 'weird' releases of the year. More an atmosphere than an album, its songs (just piano and vocals) have been cloaked in [...]
OK, so how about we just scratch the whole 'post-a-day' idea and pretend that I never said that. I've just been so wicked tired lately and honestly, the brain just couldn't muster up enough worthwhile vocabulary to write anything beyond "this CD is great" and "this CD is not so great." And my readers are worth so much more than that, aren't they? You're all like family to me. All three of you. And I think two of you literally are family. But I digress... Actually, part of the reason why I [...]
I was pretty excited to receive my copy of The Joys ' long awaited sophomore release Unfold . Their fun and playful Demolition Sessions CD came out in physical form only a couple of years ago, but the songs were actually a little bit older, back when the band was still called Popjoy, and a lot has happened in the space between those songs and these ones. A detailed summary of the last few tumultuous years are documented well in the band's bio , but let's just say that they've taken all of their experiences, [...]
March proves to be a busy month for artists on the Fanatic Promotion roster. Five forthcoming March releases were delivered via a disgruntled postal worker (I've met my mailman, he's a nice chap...please play along) this week. I might as well get a post up to plug each of them before the cat starts chewing on the jewel cases and dragging them off to strange places only to find them resurface months after the release date. Earlier this week , Sean made [...]

Listen: Joy - Lost In Hong Kong Download: Joy - Lost In Hong Kong Austrian threesome Joy recorded some incredible eighties fluff, the kind of songs that can rightfully be called guilty pleasures. They had some "hits," though I prefer this album track from their debut. Lyrically (and musically, actually) it's pretty lame, but the melody, especially in the verses, is far too catchy to be dismissed. And just look at their tough poses!
It all depends on the day. When I'm happy, I can't imagine how anyone can be upset. Life is so ephemeral, I think, and we should spend every moment celebrating and cherishing how much we have. I want to go to the park and run the gravel trails and breathe in the zen of all the peripheral beauty. But when I'm upset, happiness seems impossible. People are still being persecuted for ridiculous prejudices around the world and history keeps replaying its grisly themes like a skipping CD. Feeling good feels almost naive. "Don't you read the paper, you [...]
(photo by Tub Gurnard ) This week's forthcoming HappyHappyJoyJoy-themed Contrast Podcast is very appropriate, in many ways. I am happy, right now (in a turn-up for the books), for a number of reasons. 1) I have tomorrow off work, the first day I've been allowed to take since July. 2) I get to go to Ikea and possibly imbibe many meatballs 3) We've finally sorted out getting a new flatmate in, just a week after the fairly gross Australian departed. Just as we were starting to get [...]
Well, my first review for sctas.com is up and ready for your thoughtful perusing. I'm excited for several reasons. Firstly, Devil's Blues made for a great first review. I got to spend about a week to actually properly process the album before writing up the review which is not a luxury normally allowed in this sites obvious format. I was able to get in contact with the lead singer of Joy to ask some questions about the album. Lastly, I had an opportunity to design the page layout for the review. I'm not sure how much intentional thought [...]

New video: Mile of Sunshine Boulevard
I made this video for a church service at Forest Park Community Church using another song. Later I switched the song out for Mile of Sunshine Boulevard from my Trust CD (2006) . The ideas and creativeness came from a gifted lady named Tatum Hart. It is a song of the joy of living the Christian life. Mile of Sunshine Boulevard Travelling down the Mile of Sunshine [...]
Missy Higgins
Apologies for the lack of posts recently. The main reason is that I have not been struck by any new music that I felt compelled to share lately and it is only when I am genuinely excited about a song or artist that gives me the urge to post music on this blog. So instead of waiting for something to hit me, I thought I'd share some tracks from an artist that struck me some time ago when listening to Hitz Radio during my uni years. Whilst I probably wouldn't recommend you listen to the station now [...]

On The Eve Of My Departure
One year ago this week I left the East Coast for Los Angeles. It is weird to think that I have not returned home since then, not in a homesick way, but in a "Huh. I wonder what changes I would find in the city or my hometown" way. For as long as I can recall, I have been prone to daydreaming. During these past twelve months, I have often caught myself trying to picture the drives to various places I used to frequent when I was living at home. I ponder landmarks that were used to use to calculate [...]
MP3s | Ayo @ NPR's World Cafe & @ Taratata
I discovered Ayo thanks to Lapapaya's podcast , immediately listened her album and I was hooked by it, what a nice sensation. Simple, effective, easy listening music that in the end you'll be with a dumb smile all day. Please, check her album Joyful, produced by Jay Newland (Norah Jones) and enjoy the exquisite performance @ NPR's World Cafe and her presentation @ french show Taratata. The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul
Moved. In little over nine months I've changed jobs, home and become a parent. I don't think there is much else I can do this year to top that other than possible space exploration and I doubt that will happen any time soon after the chance was cruelly stolen from me by a newsagent. Anyway, continuing on the theme of stuff that I've just found in a box of CDs and the parallel theme of overly long tracks, a track from The Joy featuring vocals from Denise Johnson, and a track from Denise Johnson featuring The Joy [...]

Picking up the broken pieces
Awhile back I wrote some good things about the Boston-based twang-folk band Joy . Well, they are at it again and have a new 7 song EP called Sailing Days that is out now on the always excellent and always lo-fi Shrimper Records label. It is full of sprawling twangy lo-fi alt-folk that is recommended listening for fans of Iron & Wine, Sufjan Stevens, and even Sentridoh. Have yourself a listen.
