Former Red Bull Music Academy inductee Juan Son and Blonde Redhead's Simone Pace were documented during their performance as Aeiou at this year's Sónar. We rarely highlight this kind of video unless it's pretty special, and this is pretty darn special. After not knowing how to categorize their music, the New York-based duo grabbed the most exotic pieces out of their wardrobe and enchanted the festival's overwhelmed audience. As Panamérika highlights, they also performed a piece of "Cucurrucucú Paloma." This is a big step forward for Juan Son as a performer after that memorable, disastrous performance at 2008's [...]

Juan Son's follow up to his sublime (yet divisive) 2008 album Mermaid Sashimi will be out very soon, and it's brings a couple surprises. Space Hymn is the name of the new album, but as opposed to his sci-fi waterland solo debut, he is not making his journey alone. Initially, Blonde Redhead's Simone Pace carried the co-producer credits of the album, but the chemistry appears to have been so strong, they'll be presenting the album as a 2-piece band named 'Aeiou.' One of the greatest things about music leisure is to develop personal & wild illusions, [...]

After hitting the snooze button about five times Friday morning, I finally made it out of bed, out the door, and back to the Roosevelt Hotel for what would turn out to be my favorite day of the conference for one reason, and one reason only, which I will get to soon. I started the day with an interview with Los Punsetes, who were hilariously self-deprecating. Also, Ariadna's blue eyeshadow (not pictured here, sorry) was mesmerizing, and I made a mental note to try that look for myself soon. Photo [...]

Our awesome friends at 8106 , fellow nominees for Best Digital Media Publication at this year's Indie-O Music Awards, just released their second compilation titled Riesgo. The splendid and trendy blog teamed up with Reactor 105.7 to freeload six pieces that are not to be missed. We apparently know about compilations, we can say this is one worth to have on your hard drive. The compilation opens the show with Toy Selectah's terrific remix of "Lo Comandas" from the wonderfully bright kids of Banda de Turistas. Toy's unmeasured practices prove to be qualities once again, delivering a near perfect [...]

Hello everybody. Andrew Casillas here again, with the second part of my 3-part "Best of 2009" piece. The last part, my top 10 singles of the year, will be posted next week as soon as its published in it's alt-weekly counterpart. But don't worry, Carlos and the guys will be back before then with some new stuff. Saludos! [I've also included an SOT ("stand-out track") that you should seek out if you think you might be interested in the album being blurbed. And this time, I'd added [...]

Juan Son recently confessed he never liked Porter and that he doesn't like Mermaid Sashimi anymore, whatever he's planning to do next will be interesting to hear. I see him going back to rock edges; although it's clear he loves pop music (I guess he can be more exuberant in it). His solo album is aging quickly, I still find it remarkable but it's nowhere near the transcendence of Porter's Atemahawke . But no matter what, the guy is creative and has one of the most striking voices in music (it never stops surprising me), it's so [...]

Monday edition! Okay yeah I'm late on the Bay Area post but if you saw how my weekend went you'd understand. Anyway, if you made it out to the Laura Stevenson show last night, consider yourself lucky, she's a special gal. Keep an eye on her. Okay, lets get started! Tonight Coldplay heads over to the Shoreline Amphitheatre to entertain the white people, post rock heroes Tortoise and Pit Er Pat are leaving the The Great American Music Hall in awe, folk metal band Wolves in the Throne Room hit [...]

I wasn't going to post about this since I'm not going to this year's Vive Latino, but now I feel obligated to do so. Why? There is an open slot for a band to perform and they're having a contest to determine who is taking it, there are six bands up for it. In first place so far is Los Caligaris , I can't believe this guys are even considered, they're actually like a big turnoff and simply a mistake. In second place is Jumbo , who as I've stated before, I don't really dig [...]

HU HU HU, NATALIA LAFOURCADE Sony/BMG, Mexico ***** Rating: 95 by Andrew Casillas Masterpiece . As a music writer, you have to be very careful when using this term. It's supposed to be saved for those rare works that change your perception of a style of art, or that serve as the culmination of an artist's creative gestation. Masterpieces aren't supposed to be entirely subjective—they must be illuminating to even the most casual of all audiences. That's not to say [...]

- Posted by Oscar M - Have you ever had Mermaid Sashimi? Well this week, although late, I bring to you Juan Son from Guadalajara, Mexico with his debut solo album "Mermaid Sashimi". Juan Son who has been the lead vocals and charismatic face of the band Porter has now brought an even more experimental and bizarre sound and look to his fans. Mermaid Sashimi touches on elements of pop, experimental-rock, and electronica with a fantasy lyrical content. [...]

While Andrew, Carlos and I fight over who gets to review Los Amigos Invisibles' latest album Commercial (out May 26 in the states through Nacional), we're going all gaga-gaga for their collaboration with Natalia Lafourcade in the song "Vivire Para Ti". The track itself is a very traditional collaboration, but nonetheless it's juicy and delicious moment in the already spicy career of Venezuela's most representative act. As far as Natalia's new album goes, we haven't heard the finish product, but everything seems lined up for a masterwork of some kind, plus having Juan Son and Julieta Venegas in [...]

______________________________ ______________________________ _______ KATY. Mr. Racoon (Delhotel, Mexico) " Katy brings the very best of alternative pop, if that musical field exists at all. The album moves on fluently, in a revelatory phase that unfolds itself with much sympathy, one of the first high quality albums of the year." MP3: "Ferry 3" Review [...]

Notes for the Indie-O Music Awards Jury Who should win, according to us. Band of the Year NORTEC COLLECTIVE PRESENTS BOSTICH + FUSSIBLE. I really want to give it to Los Fancy Free, but I'm still drooling over Tijuana Sound Machine . Zoe's Reptilectric is not aging really well, and I've never really liked Yokozuna. You can never go wrong with Plastilina Mosh, but let's not forget their All U [...]
