As a tangential follow-up to the last post about a music video staring Ray Wise, here's my favorite recent discovery: Twin Peaks. They are a bunch of young guys making hazy rock like a humid blast of summer...something perfect for the dwindling days of winter. There are touches of Supergrass, Wavves and lot of noisy Chicago classics. "Stand In The Sand" definitely gives reason to keep an eye on these guys for more releases. Hell, they've already got an appearance under their belt on Chicago's venerable public access, indie kids dance party Chic-a-go-go. That's a [...]

In nine days the music, tech (or interactive), and film worlds will begin to congregate in Austin, Texas for the most important ‘conference’ on Earth these days, South By Southwest (SXSW). All of them will be traveling to Austin with the hope of shaking, rattling, and stirring up their industry by making their phantasms reality. And The Hideout, who annually throws a benefit concert to help artists pay their way, will once again be sending off some of Chicago's best talent with a SXSW - Send Off Party on Saturday, March 9th. [...]

Blonde Redhead at Millennium Park | Photo by Audrey Leon The Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events has now released the full lineup for the Downtown Sound: New Music Mondays summer concert series held annually inside Millennium Park. The department previously announced that the concert returns this May 28 through July 30. Rounding out this year's lineup are folk rockers Scott Lucas and the Married Men (May 28), Dub-punks The Eternals (June 11), experimental rockers Cloud Cult (June 18) and indie rockers Joan of [...]

Judson Claiborne - Song For Dreaming (Good Ol' Wobbly Version) Buy US: Buy UK:

( Sad Songs & Waltzes is a recurring feature on Muzzle of Bees, where artists share their favorite sad songs. Previous contributors include Megafaun , Delta Spirit , Damien Jurado , Conrad Plymouth , Frontier Ruckus , Ben Weaver , and Roadside Graves .) I first heard Judson Clairborne when they opened one of our shows at the Cactus Club last year. Since then, I've taken to their 2010 release, Time And Temperature . I've always thought you could learn a lot about artists by [...]

Illustration by Johnnie Cluney While Loud Loop Press staffers hungrily gorged themselves on Tofurky this past holiday season, several Chicago artists decided to rock the hell out of Daytrotter . Roots rocker Judson Claiborne , indie poppers Unicycle Loves You , new wavers California Wives and folk poppers Seafarer all recently recorded a live set for the Rock Island-based website. Pop rocking trio Unicycle Loves You unveiled a groovy, previously unreleased jam titled "Golden Girls" along with [...]
In the five years or so I've been doing this, I can't remember a better year for songs. I actually spent most of Saturday ordering a top 100, went a little crazy and decided nobody needed me to rank seven hours of tracks. So here's a top 50. Every single one of these tracks is incredible, and yes, even Ke$ha. For the record, I allowed two songs per band in a few special cases because not including both Sally Seltmann jams would be a lie (though I did cut two Best Coast songs). Also, No. 51 is Lady Gaga ("Telephone") [...]
Seen and Heard: Music Video Showcase Friday at 8pm at Chicago Filmmakers is Seen and Heard: Music Video Showcase. Among the bands with video showing are Aluminum Group, Animate Objects, Bin Laden Blowin Up, Boduf Songs, Canasta, Judson Claiborne, Double...

Does anything go to better than great live music and a boatload of short films? I think not. Well for those of you who think like me, you're in luck as the Backyard Film and Music Festival goes down at the Pullman State Historic Site , located at 11057 S. Cottage Grove, on Saturday, July 24. The festival will mix the best up-and-coming visual talent with Chicago's best up-and-coming audio talent as it will feature 20 short films, 10 bands and two DJs. The band lineup features soon-to-be-huge local indie psych act [...]

Photo by David Greenwald This is usually about the time of year I post my favorite albums (coming soon!) and songs of the first six months. In the spirit of having more fun than usual, Peter of TwentyFourBit and I have teamed up for a 20-track mixtape of 2010's finest tracks thus far - half are my picks, half are his. (Guess who picked Bon Iver.) All the glory in MP3 and streams (click through, RSSers) after the jump. Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - [...]
Moonraker / Judson Claiborne from Japeth Mennes on Vimeo . "Moonraker" comes off of Judson Claiborne 's latest release, Time and Temperature . Additional Listening: " Song for Dreaming " (mp3) Performance Date: 06/18: Brooklyn, NY @ Union Hall

Judson Claiborne's Time And Temperature is a ten track work that stylistically intermingles folk and indie with the result being more savory than my description. A well constructed and reserved stroke permeates the album with standouts like "Oh Cyril" having the stricken feel of a Palace work, only with less faux Appalachia in the voice and a little more color in the tone. I've played this several times and haven't tired of yet. There's also a cover of "The Woman Inside of Me" by Chris Knox. Song For Dreaming mp3 [...]

If the music of Judson Claiborne were a temperature, it’d be a dreamy 47 degrees and partly sunny. The Chicago-based songwriter’s newest album was released in the waning days of winter and, while it could easily pass for a spring record, has all the pent-up frustration and weightiness that accompanies that dark Chicago season. If the music of Judson Claiborne were a time, it’d be 6:59 in the morning. It’s when you’re technically supposed to wake up – for work, for class, to escape wherever you accidentally ended up last night, whatever – but it takes [...]

Having a friend that plays in band makes you obligated to see them play no matter how bad their band stinks. Multiply that by quite a few friends and you end up seeing a lot of shitty shows over a lifetime. So as you can imagine, when a friend plays in a band that's actually good, it's a real treat. That was the case with my friend who played in Low Skies . I was lucky to get advance copies of Low Skies recordings as well as catch them play a half dozen times before they split [...]

Judson Claiborne are actually friends of Jill from Sparrow & the Workshop, and it was during their Toad Session that I first heard of the band. Now, a couple of years on, they have a shiny new release, with spooky artwork and a proper PR company to send it me. There's a lot of Midlake in this - more than I remember in fact - but that's no bad thing if your tunes are solid, which in this case they very much are. There's a fair bit of Luna to some of the guitar work as well at [...]

The CHIRP Record Fair is back for a second year at Plumbers Hall, located at 1340 West Washington, on Saturday, April 10, and Sunday, April 11. There's honestly no better spot to hit up if you need some new vinyl, DVDs, cassettes or even CDs (remember those?) than the CHIRP Record Fair. There are going to be a great deal of local vendors at the event including Groove Distribution LLC , Mr. Peabody Records and even Chicago imprint Bloodshot Records . For a complete list of fair vendors, [...]

Given the volume of music available for consideration on One Track Mind, we invariably have to pass on a lot of tasty morsels. [tweetmeme] In a desire to share even more great, free music with you, the Sunday Sampler will offer a handful of tracks without the usual critical and biographical write-up. Less talk, more tunes: Parenthetical Girls "Evelyn McHale" from Privilege, Pt. 1: On Death & Endearments EP (released 2/23) [ download ] [...]
