Guest Post By: Brendan Julia Nunes' voice is soulful, her instrumentation infectious, and her Kickstarter-funded album, Settle Down, is captivating from start to finish. I found her music while searching for ukulele cover songs, many of which are not very good. Which is why Julia Nunes was such a refreshing surprise. Sample her Youtube Covers [...]
Julia Nunes : Binoculars [ purchase ] Last week, I discussed plagiarism, and touched upon the increasingly complicated issues that confront the music industry in the Internet age. The fact that so many contributors to this fine blog have lost their file hosting ability is a result of the tension that exists between copyright and fair use, between the desire of bloggers to expose readers to good music and the right of artists and labels to control distribution [...]
Walk Off the Earth and Julia Nunes cover fun.'s summer hit "Some Nights."
Day 2 of Louisville's tenth Forecastle Music Festival began with heavy rain, and a two hour delay in the day's schedule. But the gates opened wide in no time, and the My Morning Jacket-headlined list of acts went onwards without a hitch. Here is a sample of the sights and sounds you missed from Day [...]

You might know Julia Nunes better by her Youtube username, jaaaaaaa (oh yeah! That ukulele girl!) Born into a musical family in New York, Nunes spent her childhood studying the piano, guitar, and ukulele, and started writing her own songs at age 14, often posting them to Youtube and Myspace, along with covers of her favorite bands (everything from The Beatles to Destiny's Child). Soon, through pure word of mouth, her music had caught on, landing her on Youtube's front page several times and launching a shining example of a do-it-yourself music career. In [...]
As we at TWJ are making our festival schedules for this year's Forecastle Festival, there are some arteests that cross our paths that remain closer to the unknown variety. Fairport, New York acoustic magician Julia Nunes was one of the first to grab our attention with a) her blonde hair (let's hear it for honesty) and b) her [...]
Julia Nunes - 23-year-old Rochester, NY native's head-turning ascent in the highly competitive world of aspiring singer/songwriters has been dramatic. Her witty, self-deprecating, brutally honest and hilarious tunes (and inspired covers) have garnered the ukulele-toting performer 50 million youtube views, a performance on Conan , an EP with fellow tube-sensations Pamplamoose, Lower East Side club dates that sell out with a single tweet and -- most importantly -- nearly $80,000 in funds from fans to record and market her new album // Release : Settle Down (2/28) // Sounds like : beneath [...]

Singer-songwriter Ian Axel delivers some inspiring & charming piano-pop that you might want to check out. Recently named "The next big thing" by Spin and praised by NPR ("possesses the sweetness of youth, the stubbornness of a teenager and the swagger of a rock star"), Axel's debut CD This is the New Year is out now and the title track and current single, “This Is the New Year,” is the theme song for the MTV documentary series "I Used to be Fat." Ian Axel will be performing tonight at Gallery 5 with the beautiful and [...]
Northern Virginia's Filene Center at Wolf Trap With the majority of the Mason-Dixon Line above us, DC can and should be lumped with other large Southern metropolises. We know it’s getting to be summer when the Republicans start breaking out their seersucker. As almost a two year resident of Washington, the heat of summer has become something I both long for and fear. Luckily, artists and concert promoters have put together a stacked summer schedule to get you through these sticky months. As always, after the jump are all the upcoming announced shows in [...]

Well, this one came out of nowhere. Mere weeks ago, I realized that indie singer-songwriter Ben Kweller would be performing at the Camel. Kweller and his awesome songs will be playing on Sunday night - a perfect end to Thanksgiving weekend. Julia Nunes will be opening the show. This is the perfect setting for this guy. It may get crowded but you know it won't be too terrible. Since this show was very underpromoted and it's on a holiday weekend, I'm pretty sure [...]

Julia Nunes has been making music since she was 13 years old, now in her early twenties she already has two full length albums under her belt. On February 2nd the musician releases her new EP, I Think You Know. The ukulele playing Nunes proves she has a pop ear on the opener "August", a track that has a Dar Williams-like elegance in its vocal harmonies. Those vocal harmonies don't last long,
