I found this old demo over at The World Forgot a few weeks back, and have been playing it pretty heavily recently, especially given my recent obsession with all things Julian Casablancas . I absolutely adore Phrazes for the Young , but still prefer my Julian in Strokes form, especially on this absolutely stunning demo the band released on their myspace way way back. This stripped down demo, which mimics "You Only Live Once", reveals the band in their simplest and most vulnerable form. I long for another Strokes album, but until then Julian's new work, [...]

[It's Bjork's birthday on Saturday, celebrate appropriately. Here's my late-arriving weekend rundown:] Tonight: Alan Palomo's Neon Indian [pictured; download below] brings its multimedia synthscapes to the Echoplex for a night of cool electro that includes Keenhouse , Tigercity and Little Red Radio . ... I was going to post this show last week but found a much better quality bootleg. It's Julian Casablancas' show at Spaceland in Los Angeles. It served as a warm-up show for his short residency at the Downtown Palace Theatre. He plays only seven songs but it kind of leaves... Click the link to read more

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , New Music , Exclusive Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas is currently "camping out" in Los Angeles. As part of his excursion, he's doing a month-long residency of shows, playing every Friday at the Broadway Palace Theater. It turns out there's a lot of history at the venue. "I don't think there's ever been a rock show in that place," Casablancas tells Spinner. "It's where 'Thriller' was filmed and it's just a rad place, to be honest. It feels [...]
(photo: myspace.com) I avoided reading any review or talk of Strokes front man Julian Casablancas 's solo debut album, Phrazes For the Young, before actually listening to the thing myself. It was a semi-conscious decision, but one guided by premonition nonetheless. Something in my gut told me I wasn't going to be impressed, and looking at reviews wasn't going to help matters any. Almost 10 years after the Strokes ushered in the first musical revolution of the new millennium, all the hype and intrigue Casablancas and co. [...]

The Libertines' 2002 debut Up the Bracket was voted second in the list of the top 50 albums, with Primal Scream's XTRMNTR coming in third. Bands such as Radiohead and Arctic Monkeys, plus record producers and label bosses were among those who cast their votes. Guitar-led rock acts dominated the list with nine out of the top 10 places. Is This It, with its lo-fi scratchy guitars and hits like Last Nite and Someday, was one of the most acclaimed albums of the year when it was released in 2001. Its infamous cover shows a hand [...]
(A brief introduction: Hi, I'm Noah. You probably don't remember me from such productions as "32feet gets impressively drunk on SPIN's dime" and "Good god, that's the Futurehead's music," but I was there. Now I'm writing here. We're taking this thing bicoastal. From San Francisco, with love.)The Messiah -- happy, sober, and dressed entirely in black -- is bathed in white light at the front of The

It's annoying, I'm sure, but I find it really hard not to compare this to this year's other solo release by the front man of an early-nineties arch indie hipster band, Julian Plenti. Alternatively, I suppose, you could compare it to the Strokes' last and best album, First Impressions of Earth. In either comparison Phrazes For the Young fares really rather badly, in my opinion. It comes across as a light, eighties synth-pop facsimile of the best Strokes stuff with all the bite removed. And it certainly lacks the invention of Plenti's inconsistent, but often very good, solo [...]
2009 debut solo album from the Strokes vocalist. The primary inspiration for the album and it's title came from the Oscar Wilde essay 'Phrases And Philosophies For The Use Of The Young'. Julian explains; ''The Oscar Wilde thing makes fun of how superficial humans are - I was writing more about arrogance and shortsightedness'' Helping Casablancas achieve his vision was veteran engineer Jason Lader
While I can firmly say that I hope this isn't the direction the Strokes go, Phrazes for the Young is a strong statement by an artist who clearly isn't afraid to take chances.
Part 1 By: Joshua Rampage There are a candid few who can welcome an inconvenient and uncomfortable interruption into their lives so readily, but I was getting a little bored with feeling healthy every day anyway. So I did some smooching and before anyone could start snorting, I was sick. Self-diagnosing led me to believe I was suffering from the early stages of Pig Flu. I began to obsessively check my nose for an upward-tilt and my butt for a burgeoning corkscrew tail, but found evidence of neither. Instead, I was forced [...]
I've been slacking for a couple of weeks so today I give you a killer selection of the beats to move yer feets. Included are some killer grooves from Tirk & Nang Records - a couple of killer Greg Wilson edits (Roxy Music!) from the forthcoming compilation Credit To The Edit 2 and a remix of a classic tune from Space. Also tasty are a gem from Little Dragon, Buffetlibre's remix of Dragonette, a

[Birthday wishes to Butch Walker on Saturday. ... Here's what's on my weekend radar, for one reason or another — for a more comprehensive list, please visit Duke at You Set the Scene :] Tonight: It's Week 2 of Julian Casablancas' flashy residency at the Downtown Palace Theatre, and when I saw the opener last week the Strokes frontman-turned-synth-rocker promised to tweak things every week. One change is that a second opening band has been added, the Growlers joining [...]

With Phrazes For The Young , Julian Casablancas not only joins the cadre of Strokes who have released solo records, but also brings the band within one member of having all released solo albums, which is quite a feat unto itself. The band that was hailed as the great white hope of rock and roll in the fall of 2001 is clearly searching for itself, both as individuals and as a collective, and the great outpouring of solo work is no doubt a considerable part of the puzzle. With a studio album in [...]
