Julian Koster spreads holiday cheer and offends his audience at once Business idea! Flight cases for " singing saws ". Worst case scenario: you will probably have at least one customer in Julian Koster (The Music Tapes), who will need a way to protect his instruments from the elements while on the road as part of his annual Holiday Caroling Tour. Koster's festive tour centers around caroling and spreading the holiday cheer, and you can join in at one of a few select cities. [...]

The Olivia Tremor Control, with The Music Tapes / New Hazlett Theater / Thursday 09.15.2011 / 8:00 / $12-$15 Words by Brendan This is by far the coolest giveaway we have done here at Draw Us Lines. First off, we are incredibly psyched that The Olivia Tremor Control are back on the scene, making their first new music since 1999, playing their first live shows in nearly as long, and choosing to swing through Pittsburgh on this tour. I fell into the inviting musical lap of [...]

There's a certain magic to be felt any time a band can bring a group of people together in song, whether it's from an album playing or a live performance. Neutral Milk Hotel provides prime source material for group song, especially from their record, In An Aeroplane Over the Sea . I've seen people bust out in unison to their songs in hotel rooms, at dinner parties, and at punk shows; there really seems to be no bound to their audience. Perhaps you may be sad at the reality of no future NMH shows; the group [...]

It was just after 10 p.m. last Tuesday night when I got word that The Music Tapes were playing in Hyde Park. Actually, it was the last of three thirty-minute sets in three Chicago homes as part of the band's Lullaby Tour, and it would begin in less than 30 minutes. There was no way I could make the ten mile bike ride in that time, so instead I comforted myself by listening to The Music Tapes' discography, enjoying a few beers in my warm apartment, and re-sparking an old obsession. The [...]

Julian Koster and The Music Tapes , will be singing their fans to sleep this summer. The one-time member of Neutral Milk Hotel and the Elephant 6 collective and his band will be gently performing new and old songs at specially selected homes in the Boston, New York City and Philadelphia areas next month. To throw your sleeping cap in the ring, e-mail LullabyDeliveries@gmail.com. The first and "warmest" invitations will be chosen. The locations of these somnolent performances will not be made public, however, winners are encouraged to host sleepovers. It is unclear whether or not Koster [...]

I wanna start a band. I don't care that I can barely play guitar, can't sing, and have no other discernible musical talents. F#ck that! I love music. I wanna start a band. So I will. I wanna start a noise pop band. I want to make music that's slightly experimental, uber-poppy and catchy but also slathered in a layer of fuzz and satisfying lo-fi goodness. I wanna make music you can get passionate about and fall in love with. I want to make music you can sing along with at the top of your lungs [...]

Its that time of year again, when musicians either try their hand at covering the winter classics or go even further and attempt to pen the next holiday standard. Julian Koster is a member of the Music Tapes and another little band you may have heard of called Neutral Milk Hotel. What's more, the man just loves Christmas and his singing saw does too. We came across this news late , and for that we're sorry. It seems Julian was in Louisville this past Sunday (12/6). Similar to last year's caroling tour through fans' homes Julian came to town playing the tunes of last year's Merge release The [...]

Not a lot to say this week. Having had the worst ten days imaginable, thanks to an abscess and subsequent tooth pain I've been out of it. But here we are a few days later, fresh from a root canal and in much much better shape. Thank the lord. Aside from that, by Friday of last week, there quite simply were not ten tracks that you needed. Thankfully, while I was in a haze and agony, several tracks showed up and they made the cut. So here they are in all their glory... [...]

Because I couldn't give a fiddlers for those who say it comes earlier every year (2000+, given that logic it should be all year round at this stage) but mostly because along with the Doucaine (all will be revealed on Monday week) the Singing Saw is my favourite new (old) instrument. You will know Julian Koster from the Music Tapes and Neutral Milk Hotel but he has a particular affection for the wood slicer come vibrating instrument come where did that index finger disappear to. KD Julian Koster - Jingle Bells [...]

Have yourself an ethereal Christmas The singing saw (or as it's commonly known, the musical saw) is thought to date back to the late 1800s, though it really came into its own in the first few decades of the twentieth century. Early saw players used standard issue hand saws, but over the years specialized compounds, thinner steel and varying lengths were used to produce a saw that excelled at producing music in lieu of cutting wood. The saw is played with its handle between the player's legs and the blade bent into [...]
Sooooo, I took about a month off from posting on this site. I think Shawn hates me now. Oh well, I probably deserve it. Anyways, in an effort to win back his love and affection, here are five great songs that deserve some hypin' love! Awesome songs from Yellow Ostrich, The Big Pink, The Music Tapes, The Beets, and The Drums after the proverbial jump... [mp3] Yellow Ostrich - "Barefooted Coal" (demo) One of my favorite finds while writing for [...]
