The best way to get a feel for a band is to hear them live. It's a great way to start a review, too; the presentation is a vivid description of the group's power onstage, a retelling of the moment you realized that driving all the way out to see the show was worth it. [...]
If your in the mood for very happy synths , and huge, playful guitar riffs, you have found your new favorite band in Be Like Pablo. The Scottish group have definitely been inspired by the likes of Weezer, as they know how to create a ridiculously catchy sing along hook. It's nice sometimes to run into a band, that has this merriness in their music and enjoy the hell out of what they do. (Complete with some lovely hand claps) Come on, try getting the chorus out of your head. The band is currently finishing up [...]

Julian Nation - Lost Swedish Penpals Change happens by listening and then starting a dialogue with the people who are doing something you don't believe is right. The most important thing is to actually think about what you do. To become aware and actually think about the effect of what you do on the environment and on society. That's key, and that underlies everything else. - Jane Goodall

A polaroid for Christmas 2008 - bonus track!

A friend asked if I was going to do a "Best of '08" list and I told him that I don't usually do these things. For one thing, I tend to post a lot of music that is either pop, mainstream or more than a year old. So rather than calling it a best of '08, I'm calling this the accurately and glamourously named "Rodeo Round-up of Favorite Songs Posted This Year Period." (What's that? Why the "period"? Ummm, it's called an 'Element of Style.' Duh , Vance. Look it up. ) I'd [...]

So the Dragonette cover of ZZ Top's Sharp Dressed Man from the other day wasn't half bad was it? It reminded me that BuffetLibre sent over more samples of songs (just like the Dragonette one) a week or so back and I just didn't get around to putting them up. The poster U see here shows some of the artists involved in the project: bands covering popular (and a few obscure 80s) songs. The Buffet Libre website is kind of a trip. Its busy to the extreme and feels like a music [...]

You'd have to be on another planet not to at least have heard of Buffet Libre's 80's cover project. The Spanish website has embarked on the auspicious mission of covering all the great songs from the 80's. They've signed up a ton of great bands and are giving all the music away for free. I'd been staying away until now, but with this Billy Idol cover by Friday Bridge I can remain quiet no longer. After listening to this sterling cover I now want to go though the entire site and listen to all [...]
As I was compiling this week's mix, I noticed that I was using a number of Melbourne artists. Seeing it as a good excuse to look for more, I decided to do an all Melbourne feature. In no way is this list exhaustive or comprehensive. If anything, it represents my need (and desire) to get to know Australia's 'other' music scene a lot better. The Laughter Across The Street – Ned Collette Once upon a time, my underage self stumbled into a seemingly uninhabited building, climbed a few sets of dodgy staircases [...]

* Julian Nation-Press Gang Kids * Julian Nation-1992

Oh Snap! It's Valentine's Day and surely I will do one of two things today... Share some music for lovers? Select something discordant and raw for those who are candy-and-rose averse? Neither actually. Aussie Julian Nation has been playing music since he was a youngin and he's all about songs created in the short form -- the album is 18 minutes long! Melbourne Pop Haiku anyone? While there are elements of romanticism, wistfulness and charm to all of his songs, its all in an ambient way, not in a v-day emotional beat down way. Unfortunately, of late the word [...]
Click Click Sat 4 Feb 07 Muscles - Iced cream from Hyperpop! One Julian Nation - Press Gang Kids from We are all writers Do you know where all the cool Melbourne indie Kids hang out, well I just found out, it's Click Click. After having a afternoon nap, decided to check out a couple of bands. I think the price was $14, which was a bit steep, maybe if you stay [...]
What I love about doing this part, is taking the time to recognise amazing records that have in some way made my year. I had no trouble compiling my list together but I did have trouble placing them in positions; which I still don't believe in because I'd like to think each of them are in top position in their own different ways; genre wise and what else have you not. It's also the time where I can give considerable mentions to new discoveries I have found but never found the time to make a post about because I was [...]
Mike of Obscure Sound can't vote yet, but he's already honed some of the best musical taste in the tri-state area. That's especially impressive to me, when you consider I still have to blackmail my friends to keep my teenage-era purchases a secret. (Here's one freebie: Jewel's Pieces of You .) And Mike ably lives up to his blog's name, showcasing interesting under-the-radar acts from all over the stylistic map. Everyday, his page delivers the prospect of another thoughful departure, another promising sound. He's introduced me to a whole lot of great stuff, so I was [...]

I'm usually one for quality over quantity. If you are as well, I strongly recommend Julian Nation , a young artist from Melbourne, Australia. All the songs recorded on his debut, We Are All Writers , were done when Nation was 19 on a four-track recorder. The album is ten tracks long reaching eighteen minutes, with the longest being 2:18. Remember though, quality over quantity is something Nation emphasizes as well. Upon first listen, a comparison to the sparkling pop of The Lucksmiths is almost immediate. Ironically, Nation claims that the first time he started writing music was [...]
When I first heard Julian Nation, I thought this was actually some Belle And Sebastian or The Robot Ate Me song I've never heard before. Julian is from Melbourne, Australia and started making music at the age of 16 after seeing The Lucksmiths. Using all he had, a guitar, a glockenspiel, a borrowed microphone, a Casiotone and a friend's bass guitar making songs of pure pop. By the time he was 19 he

Julian Nation describes his music oh so much better than I ever could. Notice the Jens Lekman, Lucksmith and Pipas references, man if I was on the ball this would have been all Belle and Sebastian inspired music all week long! "Miranda sings and is coming around to take photos for the record cover. intermittently Tim hits things with unrivalled radness, he draws things equally as well and when he was a kid capital cat (R.I.P) was his legal guardian. Audrey has a job as a catastrophe waitress and visibly swoons whenever [...]
