This month's Remixtape begins with a wistful twist (Clams Casino, a Gold Panda redo of Lykke Li, Phone Tag tagging up Small Black's "New Chain," Creep working on Planning To Rock) and ends on a pop note (that Star Slinger remix of Alex Winston), with the middle dedicated to stranger and more beat-oriented musics. As for meta-trends: Appearing twice are Laurel Halo (via Physical Therapy's take on her "Supersymmetry" and her spin of Sleep ∞ Over's "Casual Diamond") and Pictureplane (on Becoming Real's "Closer" and with Brenmar's take on his "Goth Star"). Also appearing twice [...]

Warner Bros. Or at least we are the first batch of acts officially announced on Tuesday for this year's NXNE festival, running June 16 through 19 around Toronto. It's certainly not all of them, but there's some moderate to big names in there and perhaps most key, the headliners for the free shows at Yonge-Dundas Square that have become the centrepiece of the fest have been revealed. While there's no one quite of the stature of last year's Saturday night marquee of Iggy & The Stooges , New [...]
With most multi-day passes hovering around $200, festival going definitely isn't cheap. Add in airfare, gear, hotel/camping costs, plus the price of 4-days worth of chicken pita, and attending more than one summer extravaganza seems daunting if not impossible. So North By Northeast 's (NXNE) $50 5-day 'Music' wristbands and $150 early bird 'Priority Pass' seem like a steal, considering the festival boasts 600 international bands performing across 50 venues in beautiful Toronto. Pattered after Austin's South By Southwest, NXNE is comprised of an interactive, film, and music segment, with various workshops, panels, and activities taking place over [...]

Kryptic Minds Can't Sleep // Much like Desolate's The Invisible Insurrection , Kryptic Minds' thoughtful Can't Sleep borrows just enough from William Bevan that Burial becomes a touchstone rather than a robbing spree. That some point soon, I will have had my fill of this kind of ghosted dub about grimy life in the concrete jungle, but for the moment I welcome the Desolates and Kryptic Minds of the world. The album as a whole is an exercise in superhuman restraint. Whereas most dubstep artists are reaching deep into our reptile brains with their [...]
For hipsters everywhere, July in Chicago is only getting hotter. Rounding out its lineup for 2011, the Pitchfork Music Festival , set to take place July 15-17, has just bolstered an already impressive under card, adding indie all-stars like Thurston Moore, Superchunk, and OFF! to its three-day midsection. Also coming along for the ride: Battles, tUnE-yArDs, Gatekeeper, EMA, DJ Shadow, Zola Jesus, Twin Shadow, Toro Y Moi, Cold Cave, Julianna Barwick, Wild Nothing, and Darkstar. These additions complete a solid bill that sees Animal Collective, Fleet Foxes, and TV on the Radio as headliners, Guided by Voices, [...]

It's not too often you get a chance to see fantastic bands above 14th street, or really above Houston for that matter, but this Friday WBAR at Barnard College is putting on their annual WBAR-B-Q . I went last year- it was cold and rainy and so inside their somewhat gloomy gym, but it was still worth the trek to see Blues Control and observe real stressed-out college scenester wannabes in their natural environment. A good show AND a good anthropological experiment. This year, the weather is supposed to be nice and the lineup is even better. What wouldn't I [...]

I have been ranting and raving about Julianna Barwick's full-length debut, The Magic Place , for a few months now, and I don't think any one is going to hate on me much for that. Laying down absolutely gorgeous soundscapes time after time, Barwick put together quite the flowing album. The title track off the LP, which is beautiful in so many ways, now has a slow-paced, enlightening video to go along with it. Hit the skip to peep the video for "The Magic Place". [...]

New West Blue Rodeo's annual Summer shows at the Molson Amphitheatre are pretty much a Toronto tradition and they never have a problem getting people to come down to the lake's edge and lounge about listening to old favourites, whether there's a new record to support or not (their last release was 20092s The Things We Left Behind ). But this year's edition is notable for offering the extra incentive of having Steve Earle & The Dukes and Duchesses on board as support. [...]

Of the six artists playing Pitchfork's official SXSW showcase, Julianna Barwick 's opening set felt most attuned to the setting - stained glass windows aglow and audience seated in pews within Austin's Central Presbyterian Church . Barwick's songs are multi-layered tapestries of sound, all sharing for a foundation her extraordinary, crystalline soprano. I saw many different acts this SXSW doing fascinating things with the solo-vocalist-and-loop-station conceit, but none as delicate or precise as Barwick's. Each song felt like as certain as a tide flowing and ebbing, not just continuing from one second to the next, but [...]
I have been listening to a fair share of old music lately and when I say old I mean blog years because most of this stuff isn't going to be playing on chum fm any time soon. I know I complain about being busy with a school a lot but its almost over so I figured I might as well do it here one more time while I have the chance so here it goes. Well, it has been tough staying up to date with all the new music pouring in with the latest round of buzz bands [...]
