I really can't stay (baby it's cold outside). It's time for the holiday mix, with frost-bitten edges and full of wintery cheer and other odds and ends. Hope you enjoy it. -drew Snow Angles 1. It's the end of another week, and not much has really grabbed me except the Frontier Ruckus stuff I posted on earlier. A few discs I've been waiting for are being shipped so heopfully they are waiting in my mailbox after work. Anyway. Two nice things to jump start the weekend: Video :: Julie Doiron Me and My Friend Julie was really close to making my Top Ten Canadian LP list. This video is great and [...]

Almost 6 months ago we planned and held a sort of blogger mix cd exchange. Chris over at PoL set it up, and it was a great success. We're soon to have another, so I thought I'd look back on the wonderfulness that was the first exchange, and share my contribution with all you great people. The cover is fantastic, I know. If you'd like a larger version for printing purposes, just click here . A zip file with all the tracks is included after the tracklist. 1. Benjamin Gibbard - [...]
The Wintermitts Genre: Indie / Experimental From: Vancouver, BC Canada Taking their name from a Julie Doiron song the Wintermitts are a bunch of off the wall, self confessed A.D.D. suffering, Canadians. F ronted by multi-lingual chanteuse Lise Monique the enigmatic Wintermitts strive to create thoughtful, unpredictable and unpretentious music which they proceed to smother in the plaintive droning of a squeezebox, an [...]
With the end of the year approaching, it's time once again for the 2007 edition of the Hottest Bands in Canada survey. And in the end, it was close. Even with over 30 panelists and 150 bands receiving votes, it was close. And I'm talking insanely, nail-bitingly, one-point-separating-#1-from-# 2, "it could've gone either way if one person had even reversed the order in their ballot" close, with the difference being a ballot submitted about 30 seconds before I went to hit "Publish". But [...]

As you know, I listen to music quite more than humanly possible, and it's hard to find something different and interesting to say about each track I like. So posts like these, at times, come in handy. The following five ladies obviously are talented, and they do have great songs up their sleeves, but I wasn't quite sure of how to put it down to words, so instead of conjuring up 5 separate posts, I'm just gonna merge them all into one neat entry. If you're into indie ladies with sweet voices, accompanied by a guitar/piano, singing lo-fi acoustic folk [...]

Though you're reading this on Tuesday, it's actually Monday night as I write this, and I have to tell you--Monday has been a shitty day. I'm standing in my house looking at the not-quite-yet finished renovations that were started back in June, wondering when I'm going to get around to putting up the blinds I custom ordered in the wrong size in the living room windows, and when I'm going to finish painting the trim work around the doors and baseboards, and where the hell is my debit card which I seem to have misplaced, and how am I [...]

There is a certain kind of song that I love and do not quite know how to explain them other than calling them "wake up songs." Songs that build, but build very gradually and never explode they just sort of become realized, if that makes sense. I have spent a good amount of time compiling a definitive mix of these songs, which are all part of a 50 song playlist that is played on shuffle each morning to wake me up. I think you will enjoy these a lot. The Voxtrot song I featured in this mix really [...]

Covers are a fine thing, especially if well executed as a tribute to the original. For me covers shouldn’t be about making a perfect replica of the original, although Placebo would argue otherwise. Covers should be about your appreciation of a song and how you would convey the message the song sings. It doesn’t have to be vastly different it just has to be stylised to the covering bands persona otherwise its just the original sang by someone else, like a teenager with a hairbrush! We Are Scientists have absolutely no grasp of Icelandic (I [...]

This is doing my heart good. Listening to Whiskey Go Go's debut album "Proud Tales To Them Of Us" is putting a smile on my face. It is good time music with heart and soul and passion. They are probably sick of the comparison but the similarities to Kings Of Leon are striking. But I think that is a good thing. Some of these songs growl and rumble, some delight and many flat out rock. “It’s life,” Matt says. “I sing about what I know and feel. People wear so many masks today. But I don’t want anything [...]
In honor of today being my two year anniversary with my wonderful girlfriend Savannah, I have compiled a small anniversary mixtape and it's fantastic. Some of these are obvious, some are not: but that's the way it should be, a mix full of sappy power ballads gets old fast. Also, there is a youtube of the worst lovesong moment ever at the bottom: John Stamos (As Jesse Catsopolis of Full House with his fake band The Rippers) in all his mulleted glory singing a shirtless Beach Boys cover with candles, a power ballad facemelter, white linen, gratuitous black [...]
While I haven't gotten around to listening to very much new music lately, Julie Doiron, a Canadian singer-songwriter and the former bassist of the psychedelic group Eric's Trip, has definitely stood out to me as of late. Her music tends to stray from her roots in Eric's Trip, and takes ...

The little bean sprout and I are home alone this weekend while Amy is off at an out-of-town wedding shower. So far Hailey has tried to put sunglasses on the cat, she has hit him with a plastic baseball bat, and fetched plastic practice golf balls for me. We've been having a good time. Anyhow, here are a few songs that remind me of her or remind her of me. Some of them go back to the first mixtapes we made each other almost ten years ago. Enjoy. MP3 | The [...]

Sorry my updates seem to be less regular as of late. Exam periods are notoriously busy and, this being my last undergraduate exam period, it's extra busy. I haven't forgotten about you though! I have two great artists/songs to share and I'm thinking you're definitely gonna dig these tracks. Julie Doiron is a drastically under-appreciated, Canadian singer-songwriter. Well, we appreciate her here in Canada (she won a Juno!) but the rest of the world hasn't really caught on yet. Hopefully a few of you will get into her music. It's no real [...]

Canadian chanteuse Julie Doiron recently released her fifth full-length album under her own name. This one is called Woke My self Up and it represents the most rockin' she has sounded since her days with Canadian indie-pop darlings Eric's Trip back in the mid 90's. In fact, former Eric's Trip bandmates Rick White, Mark Gaudet, and Chris Thompson all play on Woke Myself Up with Rick White producing and contributing to every song. Woke Myself Up finds Julie Doiron breaking out (a little) of the sound I have grown [...]
