Canadian Julie Doiron 's new album Woke Myself Up streets on January 23 thru Jagjaguwar . Her friend and former bandmate in Eric's Trip, Rick White, produced and played a few instruments on this album. She released one album singing in French, Desormais , and in 2003, she put out a split with Okkervil River . I've loved her since her first solo album, and on the song "untitled", I think she sounds a bit like Cat Power. untitled from Woke Myself Up [...]

We've been fans of Julie Doiron ever since her days fronting the Canadian distorto-pop outfit Eric's Trip, and the acoustic-guitar confessionals that have made up her solo output are at once brutal and beautiful. Doiron's new album, Woke Myself Up comes out later this month, and Eric's Trip devotees will probably be thrilled to hear that the band's lineup has been brought back together for a few of the album's tracks--especially midway through "The Wrong Guy," when the song explodes into an absolutely stunning rave-up. Julie Doiron - [...]
My last post about the lo-fi jet-set introduced Herman Düne; I always associate them with Canadian indie/folk star Julie Doiron, as they're together on one of my favourite concert posters: Artwork by Yayahoni; I missed that show :( Julie was a member of Sub Pop band Eric's Trip in the 90's, and gradually gained a cult following with a series of hushed folk records that pleased all of us who

Just the other day I was wondering when we would be getting another dose of Julie Doiron . It's been a little over two years since her last release and the shakes have defenintly set in. Well the cure is set to be released on January 23, 2007, with Doiron's new record, Woke Myself Up , out on Jagjaguwar . Filled with heartbreaking confessional tales, from what I've heard so far, this is going to be an outstanding album. She sounds rejuvanated, reborn, and ready to take back what was hers [...]

So, I tried to figure out EZArchive's "new & improved" version and I just don't get it. So, like many other bloggers, I'm kicking it to the curb. This means that most of my links will soon be dead. I'll try to get some of them re-posted in the near future, but I won't be putting all of them back up. I'm going to be trying out some different hosting services over the next couple of weeks, so bear with me. And if you have a recommendation, let me know. Another challenge I've been facing is my work [...]

Akron/Family play at the First Baptist Church on Friday This Sunday at Zaphod's, there's yet another indiescene veteran in town(in addition to Yo La Tengo last week), Giant Sand . The 20+ year-old Tucson indie rock band features Howe Gelb , who has an unlikely number of Ottawa connections: his latest solo album, 'Sno Angel Like You , was inspired by a winter-time trip to Ottawa and a Bluesfest set at a church with local singer-songwriter Jim Bryson and gospel choirs. Not only was the album inspired by [...]

As worn out as I've been of late, it didn't take too much effort to find the energy to see Shearwater at Lee's Palace Tuesday night. While it was going to be great to see them on the second night of a short jaunt with The Magnolia Electric Co , I was also a little frustrated that while this would be the third time I'd seen them this year (twice at SxSW ), none of them were proper full-length sets. But hey, I'll take what I can get. [...]

I'll start off by saying that this is the hottest picture of Julie Doiron I could find. Just be grateful I didn't go with this . or this . or this ! The underlying point is that you don't have to be beautiful to make beautiful music, but having a beautiful voice certainly helps. Her voice is rich mahogany, purple velvet, warm vanilla sugar, rabbit-fur lined mittens. It's the perfect temperature in the bathtub. It's waking up on a blanket in the park with a squirrel whispering secrets in your ear. Did I mention that [...]
Herman Dune - "I Wish That I Could See You Soon". Herman Dune's new album is made with major label lucre: horn section, expensive studio, backup singers. But it's also made with familiar stuff: tambourine jangle, sneaker squeak, rhymes like high-fives. "I Wish That I Could See You Soon" hides nothing. It's about wishing that I could see you soon. It's about seeing a photograph and hearing trumpets; it's about talking to yourself; it's about wanting, wanting, wanting; about there being no way to say and nothing you can do. Part of me wants to rerecord it at half-speed, just [...]

[Julie Doiron] ". . . so i'm closing my eyes to this night, sending off all my hopes on this flight . . ." This Canadian native currently resides in New Brunswick with artist husband and their three children. Gentle & soft-spoken, Julie Dorion's music is charming in an understated, heavy-hearted kind of way. Her 2001 release, Désormais , was entirely in French. I didn't understand a word of it, but that no matter to me, the music is so lovely. [You can find [...]

I'm back with your Friday theme post. This week's theme is, well, body parts (obviously). I've kept it clean, so no songs about genitals (though I do have the entire catalogue of Peaches). Goodnight Nobody has been out since 2004, and is as good as anything Julie Doiron has ever recorded. I like this quote from the Cincinati City Beat: "Although she is often compared to Joni Mitchell, Doiron's moody minor key whispers make Mitchell seem almost giddy"Got this from 3hive!Get album for as low as $4.98!
