This past week has been exceptionally bonkers. First, there was the gigantic shitstorm kicked up by the Crocodiles' appearance at the Firebird on Wednesday night. Riding in on a wave of moderately not-negative buzz, the San Diego two-piece coifed their carefully crafted Lou Reed circa 1967 look, flicked on their drum machine for approximately 13 [...]

I was at the Biltmore last night covering Julie Doiron for Discorder . I got there in time to catch the last half of Dog Day 's set. They hail from Halifax, but they have that sort of big pop sound (see: BSS, etc) that usually brings Central Canada to mind. Pretty good stuff. To tell the truth, if I hadn't committed to reviewing it a month ago, I probably would've passed on this show. It's not that I don't love Julie, but after five straight nights of Music Waste, I was [...]

Canadian songstress Julie Doiron (ex Eric's Trip) returns to Seattle tonight for what I'm sure will be a wonderful performance at the Tractor tonight! Her newest album, I Can Wonder What You Did With Your Day, has been kicking my ass lately, especially the fabulous song "Consolation Prize" (thanks, Stereogum for the MP3!), featuring members of Eric's Trip playing on a song about how weird it is when someone who broke up with you tells you what a great couple you had been. There's something kind of chilling about this pop song (plus the weird noise/glass breaking/oh no! screaming bridge). [...]

In case you haven't noticed, I have been touting just about everything that Julie Doiron puts her hands on lately. Therefore, I could not be more excited that she is coming to town. I think it would be safe to say that she is just about my favorite. Not only am I totally in love with her, but I think she is a grittier, more tangible version of Feist. Her songwriting is superb, and her voice is always just perfect. She is a fan of spontaneous recording and her records somehow bridge the fine [...]

Here's a look at the cream of the crop of the exciting stuff happening in the T-Dot this week:City and Colour w. Julie Doiron, Massey Hall, May 26thDallas Green may be the headliners, but it's really the former Eric's Tripper that's the attraction here.City and Colour's websiteJulie Doiron's websiteGomez, The Phoenix, May 29thThe UK indie band is back promoting their new album (review here).
Julie Doiron's I Can Wonder What You Did With Your Day pretty much came out of nowhere to become one of my most-listened to albums so far in 2009. And most times, it's the simple beauty of penultimate track "Blue" that keeps me coming back for more. Here's a live version of the song shot by FADER that finds Doiron and her man Fred Squire sitting at the bar at Heather's doing a stripped-down take on an already stripped-down classic. Enjoy. Sometimes it doesn't suck to be growing up and getting older and it seems that Canadian songstress Julie Doiron knows it too. On her sixth solo album since her days in Eric's Trip, I Can Wonder What You Did With Your Day , her songs range from simple vocal with acoustic guitar arrangements (that sound as if she picked up a guitar and recorded a song, her surroundings be damned) to fuzzed-out noisy full-band indie-rock jams that are great but (as always) I enjoy and appreciate Doiron's lyrics more than I do most. [...]

This week on the show, the latest LP from Stephen McBean's pinker side: Pink Mountaintops. It's a weirdo pop record worth taking out for special occasions and sudden cravings for drum machine pop. We've also got some psychotic organ music from Finland, and a righteous garage rock from 7'' the Jacuzzi Boys and Woven Bones. If you're craving indie pop with a world music rhythm, Harlem Shakes are here to save the day, too. It's a worldly podcast. The Needle Drop Podcast: 05-09-09 [...]

Julie Doiron at Cake Shop (Photos courtesy Nikki Ross) Julie Doiron - Borrowed Minivans All of this town seems drunk tonight, and I'm looking for your hand. -Julie Doiron "Borrowed Minivans" Let's face it - we love, love, love women who sound like Julie Doiron. From Moon Pix -era Chan Marshall, to PJ Harvey circa 2004's Uh Huh Her , to Wye Oak's feedback-fondling Jenn Wassner. And, in case [...]
If you were struck by the modest beauty of Julie Doiron's new LP a few months ago, or if the last Mount Eerie album made you swoon, let's talk about a band called Calm Down It's Monday. They're a duo made up of Julie Doiron and Dick Morello, and they're putting out a new split with a couple of Julie's solo tracks. Not really a split since Julie seems to be taking up 3/4ths of the record. But anyway, Calm Down It's Monday (CDIM?) is Dick's time to shine and bring out some of [...]

Julie Doiron I Can Wonder What You Did With Your Day We didn't know much about Doiron's past except from her bio. She started playing guitar back at eighteen with a band called Eric's Trip in 1996. Since then she's been in various bands and on her own. She's now married with [...]

Does Julie Doiron have a Twitter account? Her willingness to share anything - and everything - as it comes to mind suggests that she'd be good for generating entertaining content at least every five minutes. After all, that was about the regular duration between onstage monologues at Union Hall on Saturday night, her hilarious, introspective, observational and bizarrely meandering ramblings only interrupted and upstaged by - gasp - the actual songs themselves. This is because, well, the songs are pretty great. Stacking the set early with selections from her latest album, the outstanding [...]

Hope you enjoyed your Friday. Saturday and Sunday are no let down either. A few bands decided to come through the area starting Saturday and finish off elsewhere in the region Sunday, plus plenty of one-nighters to chose from. So I guess I'll get right to it. Spoon from bands myspace Not much hasn't been said about Austin-based Spoon . Probably THE indie band of all indie bands is the best way I can describe them. Chopped vocals, great instrumentation and [...]

Julie Doiron has one of the best resumes in indie rock, as well as one of the most versatile sounds and expressive voices. Listening to a dozen of her songs feels like working through a record label sampler. From rocking out to laying herself bare, Doiron does it all well. The first of the new tracks here, "Consolation Prize," is from her most recent release, I Can Wonder What You Did With Your Day, which came out about a month ago. The other two below it are from two different 2004 albums, and are tracks [...]

There has been a lot of talk recently about vinyl. Nick even gave you all a pretty solid vinyl buying guide . Recently the sales figures of vinyl have gone through the roof while CD sales continue to plummet as the market shifts toward the duality of embracing digital media and vinyl. As a child with a father who was a former DJ, we were fed nothing but the vinyl sounds of Motown, The Beach Boys, and The Beatles with a little bit of Neil Diamond's "Cracklin' Rosie" 45 thrown in for good measure. Since high school, I've been [...]
