Winnipeg based act Oldfolks Home is releasing one free Christmas song every week in December. Each song will include artwork by artists such as Julie Fader, Howie Tsui, Garland Lam, and Kerri-Lynn Reeves. Some background on the idea behind the program is below On one sunny summer afternoon, Oldfolks Home began recording a cover of "White Christmas" for an upcoming compilation. Starting with a drum beat, the song quickly took shape as an up-beat, less traditional incarnation of the holiday standard. The process of [...]

On October 30th I finally went to a "LiVE Lounge" show. Playing at the show were: Julie Fader Here is a quick interview I did with her. The Love Machine Here is a interview with Jordan and Sean of Love Machine Library Voices [...]
(photo: James Mejia) At a show in Toronto (more like a gala, really) on Monday night, a lot of talk centered on a certain young woman who was playing with two different acts on the 10-artist bill: Julie Fader is a musician's musician, a multi-instrumentalist whose skills go beyond mere interpretation of others music to making her own. As a member of both Great Lake Swimmers and appearing with Chad VanGaalen on his soft Airplane LP, she's had a pretty hectic and busy year. Before that, Fader featured [...]

In much the same way Afie Jurvanen stepped out from behind the shadows to record a fantastic record , Julie Fader and her angelic voice has moved from supporting role to center stage with her new record, Outside In . Even if you don't know it, you know Julie. She's part of the Great Lake Swimmers. She sings with Chad VanGaalen . She plays with Sarah Harmer . She's helped out Attack in Black . Basically, her unique talents – a voice as pure as fresh snow, top notch flute and [...]

Lollapalooza emailed the complete festival schedule to its mailing list subscribers today, and although Perry has once again put together what looks like it will be a great festival, I want to bring your attention to another festival happening the same weekend, August 7th-9th. Now in it's eleventh year the Wolfe Island Music Festival will once again feature festival favourites and big names like Holy Fuck, and the usual smattering of the local Kingston scene with acts like P.S. I Love You, The Rural Alberta Advantage who we've talked about before and a personal favourite of mine Ohbijou. [...]

Frank Yang There's a scene in the Danny Boyle film Sunshine (a fantastic movie, by the way) wherein the spaceship's psych officer is in the observation deck and asks the ship's computer to open up the shades blocking out most of the Sun's intensity, even though he knows that doing so would be almost instantly fatal (the computer refuses and he settles for the minimum safe amount, don't worry, no spoiler - it's the opening scene). The point being that same urge, the one that compels you to do what is [...]

If you don't know where you came from ... who cares where you're going. In a recent interview with Pitchfork, speaking about the inclusion of a group of elementary school kids on his and band-mate Zach Sheilds' new music project ( Dead Man's Bones ) beefcake and apple-of-the-Canadian-eye, Ryan Gosling , said the following: You know when you're a kid and you get crayons and papers and just draw whatever you want and it's just a bunch of messy lines, but to you it makes sense, and then they put it [...]

photo by Stewart Jones . Well folks, tomorrow the Wolfe Island Music Fest kicks off! Huzzah! Starting the weekend off is the Hootenanny, featuring Jim Bryson, Luther Wright, Jenny Whiteley, semi-not-really-secret special guests (*cough* Handsome Furs! *cough*) and the lovely Julie Fader . Last year's was a ton o' fun - you may recall that I talked about last year's instalment here - and I have no reason to doubt that this year's will be too. Julie Fader first came to my attention as she provides backup vocals, keyboards, and [...]
