Filed under: Concerts and Tours , Exclusive Singer and songwriter Julie Peel is as charming as her music, which invigorates more traditional folk with a contemporary pop sound. Peel, originally from Cannes, France, and having lived in Paris for the past ten years, relocated to Brooklyn about two months ago and is now preparing to perform at SXSW for the first time. Known to her friends as "Jules," she prefers not to reveal her full given name. "Peel" is the beginning of [...]

French indie rocker and self-taught multi-instrumentalist Julie Peel writes smart, well-crafted folk rock with a pop sensibility reminiscent of Aimee Mann, Neil Young, Beth Orton and Feist. Julie's debut album "Near The Sun" is a rare and unexpected gem of a release. Featuring catchy dynamic tracks such as "Living in a Movie" and "Once More With Feeling" to quieter introspective songs such as "Unfold" and "Near The Sun", the album has a lot to offer and compels repeat listens. Julie recently received an unusually early invitation to showcase at SXSW in 2010, and has been touring in [...]

DOWNLOAD: Julie Peel - "Unfold" MP3 Canada-to-Brooklyn transplant Julie Peel has announced a last minute full-band show tonight at Cameo Gallery opening for Uninhabitable Mansions (which is a new band that features members of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Au Revoir Simone, Radical Dad, and Dirty On Purpose). Julie takes the stage at 8PM tonight - cover TBD. Julie released her well-received debut CD Near The Sun (American Laundromat Records) a few months ago which I thought sounded like a [...]

I was never a real fan of goth-rock, though as I've written about before, pretty much anything that made the Top 40 in the 80s seems to linger in the minds and hearts of both my own generation and the artists it has since spawned. And The Cure was undeniably the most prevalent band of its type in mainstream mall culture when I was growing up: in my early adolescence, I dated several girls with somber black-and-white Robert Smith posters on their bedroom walls, and - looking back - can only suppose that the band's [...]

DOWNLOAD: Julie Peel - "Unfold" MP3 Julie Peel is a Canadian singer/songwriter who just released her debut CD, Near The Sun , on American Laundromat Records. With lyrics that sound like semi-confessional stories and a layered, atmospheric production, some immediate points of comparison are artists like Beth Orton and Lisa Germano. Julie first came to my attention with a stripped down cover of The Cure's "A Night Like This" which was included on the Just Like Heaven: A Tribute to The Cure compilation. [...]

Having survived the flooding in Atlanta earlier this week, I've buried my nose in a book- well, figuratively at least. Truthfully, I've been listening to the new Dan Brown book while running or working out this week. It's like multitasking at its finest- I'm reading while getting a work out, with no danger of running into anybody. Brilliant! Of course, listening to 16 hours of narration does take away from music time, but I've still managed to find a few tracks to put in the mix this week. Rains are supposed to return this weekend, so if [...]

Julie Peel is a Canadian folk artist I have enjoyed on several tribute compilations for some old favourites of mine. She has done a wonderful version of "A night like this" by the Cure , The Pixies' "The Happening", The Breeders ' "Fortunately gone" and "Divine Hammer" and "I believe in you" by Neil Young . Now, she is here again with her own songs, and they are good! Her music must not be compared by the bands she has covered, – they are from another musical universe. If you [...]
Julie Peel is releasing her debut full-length album, Near the Sun, today September 22, on American Laundromat Records. Previously featured on ALR compilations including Just Like Heaven (a tribute to the Cure), Gigantic (a tribute to Kim Deal), Dig for Fire (a tribute to the Pixies), and Cinnamon Girl (a tribute to Neil Young), [...]

I get a lot of e-mails now that I write for a music blog. Like, a lot. I don't always get through them in a timely manner, but I try and sift through it all at least once a week. It's generally a bunch of stuff I don't care about, but sometimes I come up with something that makes me glad I took the time to sort through the junk. Something like Julie Peel . Peel's debut album Near the Sun is filled with wonderful, mostly-acoustic pop songs. I shouldn't be surprised that someone from [...]
