Writer/Photographer: Brooks Hays The Rock 'n' Roll Hotel is located in the dare I say "hip" up and coming neighborhood often referred to as "H Street" and formerly known as the "Atlas District." The venue is a more rough and tumble version of the Black Cat, with a rowdier clientele, limited standing room, and less bar space to track down a drink. When you do manage to lure a bartender over to your smidgen of claimed wood, he only charges you four dollars when you [...]

The Junior League Band, fronted by the sultry songstress Lissy Rosemont, is set to release Jelly Roll, the third full-length album on their label Beaver Records, July 16th at the Rock and Roll Hotel . AON had a couple questions for Lissy, and she was more than happy to share some background on the album, her chance meeting with Sarah Siskand and the fact that her wedding planner is terrible at booking shows. Be sure to listen to her new single below, "So I Want Out". AON: Festival season is upon [...]
Photos by: Kingpinphoto & Raul Zahir De Leon This past Friday, we descended up on the Hotel to catch this folk-pop showcase. Three bands with a common musical foundation, combining for a line-up that makes perfect sense on paper but which could run the danger of blurring together as the night progresses. Yet the night was quite successful, with each band heading off in a distinct enough direction highlighting some of the sonic hidiversity contained within a fairly broad label. The night kicked off with an opening set by Lightfoot , [...]
Junior League fans out there have another band to follow now that Elias Cohn, former JL bassist, has joined forces with Stripmall Ballads , the latest "musical manifestation" of Phillips Saylor. "I joined Stripmall Ballads because I believe in the artistic vision of the band," said Cohn when asked about his departure. "I think the music and the attitude of the project is more in line with what I want to express as a musician." Stripmall Ballads has performed with the likes of Sarah Harmer, The Be Good Tanya's, and Jolie Holland and recently played [...]
Over the course of the last 3 years, Junior League Band has been spreading the gospel of bluegrass-inspired folk rock all over the country. But not to be pigeon-holed, their sound manages to incorporate a wider range of styles, taking into account each of the band members backgrounds and influences. Started by Lissy Rosemont in 2006 here in the District, the Georgia-bred vocalist and finger picker has led her rotating cast of intrumentalists to headlining sets at this city's best venues and across the nation. The band has garnered comparisons to the likes of Alison Krauss and [...]

After a few days off due to holidays, day trips and other things that have popped up, I am finally back on track and will give you some ideas for what to spend your time and money on Thursday and the coming weekend for auditory and visual entertainment. By the looks of the DC/Baltimore and Pennsylvania calendars, it is going to be another busy one. Travis (photo from bands myspace) A couple of bands are hitting the area [...]

Yeah, it is about that time for bands to migrate southward towards Austin and the music festival know as SXSW. Philly and Baltimore are very sparse, DC has a bit more. Guess we will see a surge in the coming weeks as bands come home or continue their tours. Still, some great shows to see this weekend. Here is what's happening: Bell X1 (via bands myspace) With their new album Blue Lights on the Runway just released [...]

I wasn't sure what I was going to write about today. I've got a couple half finished posts I could have completed or I could have just taken the day off. Then I rechecked my email inbox and discovered that something in there would fit perfectly on Songs:Illinois. The Washington, DC based roots band the Junior League Band have a new record out on September 30. Lissy Rosemont is the front woman and the driving force in the band (the press release states that it's her banjo in the new song by Missy Elliott). [...]
