Narcoleptic soul brew - Junior Parker's psychedelic molasses rendition of the Beatles "Tomorrow Never Knows." One of three Beatles covers found on his 1971 LP, Love ain't Nothin' But A Business Goin'On, Parker died of a brain tumor the year of its release. MP3: Junior Parker :: Tomorrow Never Knows

If you were born in the south in the eighties or later, this week's classic feature is probably your grandfather's music. I'm 64 and grew up as a young teen hearing this music. I don't mean I actively sought out these sounds on the radio or bought these records, or even attended performances by people like Little Junior Parker, which was an early stage name for Herman Parker Jr. Most of the times these guys performed in night clubs, taverns and bars (is here a difference between the two?), labor halls, rental halls, plus miscellaneous [...]

In the 6 th volume of soul covers, we have the great Grady Tate's interpretation of the Theme of M*A*S*H and versions of songs previously recorded by Gil Scott-Heron, Bob Dylan, Big Brother & the Holding Company, Elvis Presley, James Taylor, Righteous Brothers, Tammy Wynette, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Joe South, Rolling Stones, Credence Clearwater Revival, James Brown, Cream , Peggy Lee, The Beatles, The Flamingos, Julie Andrews, Nat 'King' Cole, Billy Joel and Cat Stevens. Quite a mixed bag. This mix features a fair number of country songs remade as soul songs, showing how close the two [...]

Filed under: The Hit List As a member of the Beatles, George Harrison was lucky to get a couple of songs on each album. Yet, despite being overshadowed by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, Harrison wrote some of the band's most endearing tunes. Once the Beatles split, Harrison's explosion of solo hits -- many written while with the Beatles -- suggested that the two-song limit [...]

Stand by Me Well sometimes I feel that all a my tryin' was all in vain I don't think I can last much longer, 'till I see your face again, whoa whoa If I could just hold your hand and I know that you would a- understand whoa I need you darlin' to stand by me, stand by me [...]

This year I won't be doing a Halloween mix. For those who m issed last year's mixes, take a look at Any Major Halloween Vol. 1 (creepy stuff) and Any Major Halloween Vol. 2 (less creepy stuff) . Meanwhile, fortify yourself wth some soul music. Of all the mixes that I compile for this blog, I think doing the soul covers is my favourite. For one thing, as I go through my collection of music, I get to listen to some gorgeous soul albums I [...]

Check out I'm Gonna Murder my Baby by Pat Hare. Even the guitar licks are nasty. Pat Hare played with a bunch of different guys in Memphis in the 50s. Here he is with Junior Parker, Feelin so Bad... Here's Sonny Boy Williamson - I'm a Lonely Man I eat my breakfast in the mornin, my teeth and tongue begin to fight... Here's Guy Clark's Dublin Blues

I'll always remember as a child waking in the middle of the night to the sound of trains in the distance. There seemed to be an endless stretch of cars that would clang on beat as they passed over the rails - it never really was a bother, my already fuzzy dreamlike state would enhance the mystery of where those trains were headed. Between that deep thought and the metronomic chugging of the locomotive, it wouldn't take long to fall back asleep. The Mystery Train has always been very real to me, the romantic notion of the great unknown that [...]

Founded in Houston in 1948, ACA Recording Studios was first known for its R&B recordings, a place where Johnny Ace and Lightnin' Hopkins cut a number of their sides along side lesser known artists who appeared on the Peacock and Duke labels. Within 10 years, Ray Doggett, Royce Porter and assorted country and rockabilly artists began to cut their records on ACA's Ampex mono recorder. The studio's founder, Bill Holford, continued to work into his seventies, mastering records on a home four-track long after ACA closed. Here's a sampling of some of the artists who recorded [...]

If you have the patience to watch and enjoy as a rich noir- influenced story unfolds with diverse characters, three loosely interrelated plots, and an absolutely top-notch soundtrack, then Jim Jarmusch's Mystery Train is one you should definitely dig up at the rental place. I never saw this when it came out in 1989 because although I have always liked this kind of music, I was preoccupied with NKOTB at the time and probably wouldn't have been allowed to see it anyways because there are boobies. [...]
