Junk Culture is a new project by Deepak Mantena, a recent signing to Illegal Art, home of Girl Talk, Steinski, Bran Flakes and more. The first Junk Culture EP, "West Coast," will be released October 27, 2009, with another EP following in the spring of 2010. Junk Culture will play select west coast shows with [...]

Junk Culture could very well be the indie world's replacement for Girl Talk and his ever growing popularity. A couple of years ago I saw Girl Talk play at the Echoplex, a 700 person venue that wasn't even close to being sold out. Now, he's practically headlining festivals, getting evening time slots at Coachella, Lollapalooza, and practically every other popular festival of the past couple of years. I hear he's already working on his next EP with more traditional vocals and songwriting. From the [...]

MP3: Junk Culture - "West Coast" On first listen, Junk Culture sounds a lot like a typical Illegal Art act. It's sampling to create something new. However, Junk Culture is a bit more of a live band than your typical Illegal Art output. The project from Deepak Mantena has some samples, sure, but some of those are Mantena sampling himself. His brother, Nitin, joins in on drums for the live show and vocals are sung over the samples. It just goes to show that the art of stealing can be used to make [...]

We don't have access to Deepak's mp3's just yet, but here's a link to his myspace page that has "West Coast" & "City Side," two great songs on his upcoming EP [...]
