It's been a while since I went to a music festival on Wollaton Park and this is the first time I've paid. Those freebies were the Heineken festivals of the late eighties and early nineties, halcyon days. Later the historic hall looked down up on the City in the Park and Distortion festivals and now we have Splendour. An odd and slightly off putting name for a music festival if you ask me. The whole thing is organised by Nottingham City Council and ran by DHP Concerts, the [...]

Wow, this turned out to be an uncommonly excellent week for nocturnal emissions of cool tunes on the tube. Usually, there are one or two clinkers we'll throw into the mix here just for a couple of cheap laughs (And really, what's the point of living if you can't have fun at the expense of others?). But this week it's just solid sounds from front to back, from sharp-shooting buzz bands to old heroes returning to the fray. Cyndi Lauper/Allen Toussaint - Late Show with David Letterman (June 14, 2010) [...]

There will always be a small bunch who will never forgive Justin Currie for the sins of his former band, Del Amitri. Namely, the speed and vigor with which the group abandoned the angular new-wave-ish promise of its 1985 self-titled debut for more conventional pop inroads. Currie makes no apologies for the 17 years and [...]
The former frontman and chief songwriter for beloved Scottish pop/rockers Del Amitri -- best known for the two-minute '95 hit "Roll To Me" -- Justin Currie returns May 4 with his second solo album The Great War (Ryko). The follow up to 2007's wonderful What Is Love For , Currie's new project again skillfully wields the sharp, sweet and edgy hook as the most effective of tools, bringing his incisive wordplay into tight focus with melodies that sometimes seem just too good to be true. You know you're in the presence of a naturally gifted [...]

1. Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid 2008 hasn't been a classic year for albums, but a handful of records stood out, none moreso than this brilliant set from Elbow. They've never convinced me over the course of an album before, despite a handful of tracks from each previous release making an impact. This time though, the heartfelt and powerful songwriting of tracks like One Day Like This, Bones Of You and the astounding Mirrorball have [...]

Back in the late '90s, early '00s, Rkyo tinted their CD gases green. This made it SUPER EASY to find good music in music stores. Whenever you spied a green case, bingo – good music. Fast-forward to 2008 where digital music is king. No more green cases. In fact, you don't even need cases anymore. But Ryko is still putting out good music. Here are 8 songs from the 2008 Ryko catalog broken down into = Band ~ Website ~ Album Title ~ Genre (using food as a metaphor) ~ [...]

Since we're still all turkey'd-up and felling good, we thouht we'd lob another thirteen slices of delicious tunage your way before the month ends. Download and slide them into a playlist with an eye-catching title like "ORIGINAL RADIOHEAD "IN RAINBOWS" DEMOS - NOT FOR DISTRIBUTION", but leave your Nano or Zune out in plain sight so your subway-mates think you are all insider and stuff. Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - "Son Of Sam" mp3 Lydia Lunch - "Hangover Hotel" mp3 [...]

I was never a huge Del Amitri fan, but I've fallen for lead singer Justin Currie's debut solo album, What Is Love For . Justin describes himself as " living a quiet life of standing up and sitting down in Scotland with his two pet television sets ." Whipsmart, he is, and it's reflected in his music. I didn't see this one coming. What Is Love For is a terrific autumn record, [...]
You wouldn't have thought that, would you? But a warrant has been issued for Justin Currie's arrest . Currie was supposed to appear in court yesterday to answer a speeding charge. He didn't show, so now could be dragged to court against his will. And he reckons nothing ever happens. music del amitri justin currie
