I know this might be old news about the long-list for the 2011 Polaris Music Prize . Since I was at NXNE , why not check out the nominees. They always have great food at the Drake Hotel. It was a great way to meet musicians and some industry people there. It was a surprised to see Dan Snaith of Caribou there. He was there to announce the ten nominees. I told him that I thought he was in England since Pick A Piper played the night before at the Garrison and [...]

On Friday, I told you about the thousands and thousands of CDs I got to sort through in my Program Director's office last week at WDVX. I shared a few of my finds with you then, and I'd like to share a few more of them here today. Rebecca Pronsky - Departures & Arrivals As I mentioned here last month , Brooklyn native Rebecca Pronsky's new [...]

Justin Rutledge doesn't make it out this way very often, but when he does it's something special. He wowed the congregation when he performed with Daniel Ledwell and my all-time favorite female vocalist Jolie Holland and getting the chance to see him in the warming confides of the back-to-back ECMA award winning venue, The Company House , is one not to miss. Oh, did I mention that the lovely and talented Jenn Grant will be warming the stage for him too? Could that mean we will hear them deliver [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive , Awards , Junos Six Shooter/Warner Justin Rutledge stands on the stage coolly picking a rockabilly lick on his acoustic guitar. A beautiful blonde woman struts towards him, loosens his tie, slips it over his head, and plants a wet and lingering kiss on his mouth. Rutledge is a good-looking guy and he writes sensitive folk songs. Undoubtedly, his music has set the hearts of women [...]

With a growing number of albums hitting Beat Surrender's virtual doormat I've started to carry around with me more of the new music that gets sent my way, listening on the move is not always ideal so the music needs to quickly grab my attention, Justin Rutledge's latest album The Early Widows did just that and after the first listen I was immediately reaching for the repeat button. The Early Widows is Toronto native Rutledge's fourth release, all on Six Shooter Records, for this album he was persuaded to [...]
So goes the motto of Canadian indie label Six Shooter Records and who can argue when you listen to the three albums they have set for release over the next month or so, Amelia Curran "Hunter Hunter" gets a UK release on 6th Sept, Justin Rutledge "The Early Widows" on 27th Sept and Luke Doucet "Steel City Trawler" on the 4th October. Three very different albums all top quality and all worth some attention, all three artists are touring the UK in the autumn, check the dates here , all [...]

If you have been reading The Late Greats for a while, you know The Duke champions bands from Canada. So when news broke this week that one of my favorite music festivals - The Philadelphia Folk Fest - will be featuring a "Canada Stage", I got extra excited for the event (August 20-22). Slated to play said stage (on Sunday the 22nd) are: Treasa Levasseur If you like your blues piano with sultry vocals, you'll LOVE Treasa. [...]
A lot of jokes involve Canada (and we've perpetuated a lot of those stereotypes here at CoS). But if there's one thing our neighbors to the north do well, it's honor their best and brightest musicians with the Polaris Prize . And that they'll do come September 20th in Toronto. As of now, however, 40 acts and their must-hear albums have been announced, but that list will get leaner by next month. According to the Montreal Gazette , the 2010 award honors albums released from June 1st, 2009 to May [...]
Here is part 2 of who I or you should check out at NXNE in Toronto. So this will be Thursday night's event. It is going to be busy insane Thursday at NXNE. A hard decision to choose on who to see badly. Let's check out who will be playing. Found out that from Thursday to Sunday there is going to be a " Live in Bellwoods " picnic series at Trinity Bellwoods Park. It is present by The Musebox and Humble Empire. [...]

Other than being much more attractive than myself, Justin Rutledge has a new album out called "The Early Widows". This album is something I was really looking forward to. The album is chock full of Justin's signature delicate vocals over numerous ballads with just a bit of twang for good measure. Ever since his fantastic track "Alberta Breeze" from his Man Descending album from a couple of years back, I can't get enough of this guy. I know the die hard fans will go to an earlier album "The Devil On a Bench in Stanley Park", which was pretty darn [...]

Filed under: Exclusive , New Music , Canada Many acts road test new material on stage before going into the studio. Toronto singer-songwriter Justin Rutledge had another idea: he posted sample lyrics from his new album, 'The Empty Widows,' on Facebook. As he was writing, snippets and sketches of ideas would be posted as status updates for friends and family to comment on. "Sometimes I would get two thumbs up, and other times people would be like 'WTF?'" Rutledge tells Spinner. "It was a really good [...]

(source: facebook.com) In this morning's Globe & Mail , music journalist Brad Wheeler has a nice little piece about Justin Rutledge , the Toronto-based singer songwriter whose last album, Man Descending was inspired by the short story collection of the same name by Guy Vanderhaeghe. Rutledge has been working on a new LP, The Early Widows (slated for release on May 4), and turned to literature once again for lyrical inspiration: Michael Ondaatje. Ondaatje and Rutledge have been collaborating on When [...]

Unfortunately we didn't make it out to any In The Dead of Winter festivities last night, but hopefully you did. Tonight is chock-a-block full of options again, as you likely remember from our Friday Preview - again, that Bahamas/John K. Samson bill at St. Pat's will be hard to pass up. But today, we're going to have a look at what's on tap for Saturday night: St. Patrick's Church, $25 : 8:00 - Catherine MacLellan 9:00 - Justin Rutledge 10:00 - [...]

Filed under: Exclusive , Northern Exposure , Canada Toronto indie label Six Shooter Records (home to Luke Doucet , Jenn Grant and Justin Rutledge , as well as Polaris Prize -nominees Elliott Brood ) has a knack for rooting out artists who carry on the Canadian troubadour tradition. Their latest discovery, East Coast singer-songwriter Amelia Curran , fits right in. With four albums already to her name, Curran's no stranger to Canadian roots-music fans, but her new release [...]

Filed under: Exclusive , Northern Exposure , Canada It's hard to say whether it's getting easier or harder to discover a good song. Today's iTunes culture lends itself to sifting through a ton of music, but that inundation of choice often feels like one big muddle. But when the latest single from the latest band jumping on the hipster bandwagon starts to get tiresome, coming across a new song by an artist you haven't heard before can feel like uncovering an alluring secret. That's what it's like [...]

Concert Review: Justin Rutledge with NQ Arbuckle, The Mod Club, Friday, May 29, Toronto Rule number one when headlining a live gig: don't let the opening band upstage you. NQ Arbuckle opened the early show at the Mod Club in Toronto on Friday, May 29, with some serious country-rock. Lead by raspy-voiced Neville Quinlan, the band rocked through eight songs spanning all three of their Six Shooter Records releases. They opened with a smoking version of "Huntsville Affair" [...]
