It's that time of year to look back on the past 12 months and say "what the hell happened to the last 12 months?!". It's also that time of year where us music bloggers and self-proclaimed critics take the time to put together some Best Of lists for your reading pleasure. They don't really mean a whole lot and you can love 'em or leave 'em, but it seems like the right thing to do to sum up the year in preparation of the next. This year we're featuring personal lists from all of our fantastic writers. [...]

As we've reported over the last few weeks, 2011 saw the release of plenty of great music. Luckily, in a year with so many great releases, we also had the opportunity to see plenty of great shows. From arena blow outs to dive bar ragers, the following are the 13 best live performances I saw the last 12 months. 1/15: Punch Brothers @ Bowery Ballroom (NYC) Punch Brothers are arguably the most talented touring band today, and their mid-January Bowery Ballroom performance did not dissapoint. Billed as one of their famed "P-Bingo" Nights, Punch [...]

Hit the gallery to check out the winners of this award, truly the people's champions when it comes to crushes. Just outside the fray: EMA and Wye Oak's Jenn Wasner for the ladies, Fleet Foxes' Robin Pecknold, Noah Lennox and Kurt Vile for the fellas. And for the person that voted for '3112 in every single category, we'll relay the (paraphrased) wisdom of an old sage as advice; "Failing to fetch me at first, keep encouraged. [...]

Recently for a special CBC show, the National (pictured above) teamed up with Bon Iver 's Justin Vernon for a unique duet on 'Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks', from the National's last album 'High Violet'. For some of you, this is probably your wet dream (not mine, but diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks and all that), so enjoy it below. Click here to view the embedded video.

It's been nearly three years since local-favorites-turned-Grammy- nominees Bon Iver have played a show in their hometown of Eau Claire, but on December 12 th and 13 th , the band took to UW-Eau Claire's Zorn Arena for two sold-out shows. Thousands of fans – many of whom camped overnight and waited for hours in sub-freezing temperatures for tickets – were finally able to welcome the band back from their latest European tour, and easily filled the 3,500 capacity venue. The show was opened by Lianne La Havas, a Londoner who warmed up the crowd with a solo [...]
This is an automatic "You Gotta See This"--if for no other reason than to see Justin Vernon in his fitness gear.
Tweet vaso link The National were on CBC Radio's "Q" show in Toronto last week, and lightning rod Justin Vernon joined them for a live rendition of "Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks." Here is the evidence.
With four Grammy nominations , an appearance in a workout video and brushing off arguments over whiskey via Twitter, 2011 has been a big year for Justin Vernon . Since the release of Bon Iver , there have been a number of musicians and fans breaking out their instruments to perform their own versions of the songs. Some covers are good while others are bad, but a few that really stick out from the pack. One such cover includes Columbus, Ohio-based Deadwood Floats ' version of "Holocene". Deadwood Floats' version [...]

The best thing to hit the web this week was undoubtedly a three-minute video focused on Justin Vernon's workout regime. Well, not only is the clip real, but it's part of a full-length workout DVD. Entitled On The Road , the DVD was directed by Dan Huiting, the same Dan Huiting behind Bon Iver's videos for "Calgary" and "Holocene" . Speaking with MTV Hive , Huiting confirmed the clip's authenticity, explaining that the full-length DVD spans "45, 50 minutes" and features music from Bon Iver, S. Carey, Megafaun, We are the Willows, and others. "It's like a workout [...]

At indie's top table, there can't be many others more content at the moment than The National & Bon Iver's Justin Vernon. The former are coming to the end of a mammoth slog of touring and promotion for last year's High Violet , a record that continued their spellbinding, slowburning rise to the pinnacle of modern guitar music. The latter, despite Vernon audibly hating such things, have featured in many Best of Year Lists' top 5 and been nominated for four Grammys for this year's beautiful self-titled effort. It's only fitting then that the two collided before [...]
One of the more candid, well-done interviews you'll see with the mind behind Bon Iver. Just killing the hair game too. Tweet
The National feat. Justin Vernon - "Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks" // Leave it to Canada's CBC Radio to bring together The National and Bon Iver's Justin Vernon for a beautiful version of one of High Violet 's best songs. - MW
Last night, Bon Iver and the National were both guests on Q , a show on the Canadian network CBC Radio. They came together in a live session, with Bon Iver's Justin Vernon singing backup on the National's High Violet track "Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks." Vernon's backing falsetto sounds pretty great alongside Matt Berninger's baritone, but Vernon's going to have to start dressing a little nicer if he's going to hang with those dudes. Below, check out video of Vernon with the National, as well as a video of Vernon's interview on [...]

Confession: when I work out, Kanye's "The New Workout Plan" is always on the playlist and have this wonderful image of Ye working out alongside with me. Okay, so that's one workout plan (kind of) we know of. But did you know that Ye's buddy Bon Iver has an actual workout plan (did you know that Bon Iver worked out)? He doesn't strike me as the type, but it's also stated in the video that his purpose is to retain his health. Good for him. To have such an incredible career and to ensure he's in good shape too? The barriers to becoming a successful artist have diminished over the years, but is Simon Cowell to blame or are we?
