In August of 67, British prog traders Soft Machine were heavily en vogue in France, touring the Côte d'Azur including a legendary gig taking place in the village square of Saint-Tropez – which led to an invitation of producer Eddie „Bluebeard" Barclay's (the man had nine wives) then-fashionable Nuits Psychédéliques and eventually to an unforgotten performance at the Paris Biennale in October of the Été d'Amour. Their first album, recorded in NYC the following year, features Plus belle qu'une poubelle (More beautiful than a garbage can), a short, superior and stony reminiscence of those intoxicated Riviera days. In 1994, Nick Currie alias Momus placed an ad in French Nova magazine: „Girl singer wanted for an album of songs in the style of 1970s Italian soft porn films." The final babe of his choice was half French, half Thai art student Laila France whose role model was clear right from the start. She was going to be Momus's European clone of Kahimi Karie – Her Majesty of the Irresistibly Whispered Japanese Ultra Babypop who had recorded a good dozen of knockout smash hits with the Scottish artist –, while Momus sticked to his usual [...]

Due to a well-informed FS reader (see comments here ), we now know that Japanese uber-poupée Kahimi Karie married tap-dancer Kazunori Kumagai two months ago. Congratulations, Kahimi! For more info, also see the web journal of Kahimi collaborator Momus, and don't forget to check out the free-minded and funny discussion at the end of the page. Some people might have lost track of her, but you - well, I, see here - can't praise Kahimi Karie highly enough. Serge wasn't around anymore to take advantage of her, so Cornelius/ Keigo Oyamada and Nick Currie/ Momus took over to produce the most sincere, dishonest, tender, over-the-top and still unsurpassed bébé pop, an amalgam of Birkin-esque whispers, Claudine style, Vanessa tongue-play, and a fairy-tale fetish innocence that's gone in a split second - grab it while you're there. Kahimi Karie - Dis-Moi Quelque Chose Avant De Dormir

The only way to make love worthwhile is without caution. Kahimi Karie - Habanera Trapeziste (2003) Roberto Cardoso - Taquito Militar (Milonga Porteña) Guitarra (Dial, 1999) Susana Baca - De los Amores Eco de Sombras (Luaka Bop, 2000) Brigitte Fontaine - Il se passe des choses Brigitte Fontaine... est Folle (Saravah, 1968) [...]

Kahimi Karie "What Are You Wearing"

"The Japanese pop phenomenon known as Shibuya-Kei exploded forth from the ultra-trendy Shibuya shopping district of west Tokyo, an area home to some of the most fashionable and best-stocked record and clothing stores in the world. Shibuya-kei -- literally, "Shibuya style" -- was the name given to the like-minded pop musicians who emerged from this consumer culture, a group of young Japanese weaned on a steady and amazingly eclectic diet of Western pop exports; the result was an unprecedented collision of sights and sounds, with trailblazing acts." (allmusic.com) So here's "Bossa-Shibuya-kei-A la Française": (or [...]

Mr. David Hamilton is photographing me Like a pervert teacher with his languid creature Sketching out an adolescent sexuality Where Nature longs for Culture, Culture longs for Nature I've been waiting for a chance to make a post on David Hamilton, the iconic 70s photographer. Above is a quote from Kahimi Karie's ode David Hamilton, which says it all, really. London-bred Hamilton made a classic lesbian movie ( Bilitis , with music by Francis Lai), the best known film out of the five. [...]

Guestposting time again - Sky on Japanese babypop princess Kahimi Karie: Kahimi Karie’s career began in 1992, with the release of her EP Mike Alway’s Diary , a tribute to the legendary founder of Él Records. Muse and lover of Keigo Oyamada a.k.a. Cornelius, she was already an icon of Tokyo’s hip Shibuya district, when she met Nick Currie a.k.a. Momus in 1994, who didn’t become her lover („If you want to know whether I fucked Kahimi, I have to say, alas, no“, he told me a few years ago) but wrote her [...]
