Lucinda Williams is surely better known - or at least more easily recognized - for her ragged heartbroken delivery and emotional way with a guitar than her songbook per se. But as we noted back in May of 2009, when we featured her interpretations of other peoples' songs , it wasn't always the case: her first Grammy win was as a songwriter, for Mary Chapin Carpenter's 1992 performance of Passionate Kisses . In many ways, of course, Williams' is an unusual path towards stardom: though her 1979 debut [...]

Do Brooklyn duo Kaiser Cartel sound familiar to you? Maybe it's their "Like a Better Version of She and Him" vintage charm and or maybe it's because no less than three of their songs were featured on HBO's underground favorite Bored To Death . You might have gleaned a bit of Kaiser Cartel info from us at Radio Free Chicago earlier in the summer when Kaitie reviewed their CD or from when they hit Schuba's with the lovely Jeremy Messersmith . Regardless of why you know them, admit it: That [...]
Brooklyn-by-way-of-Indianapoli s kids, Kaiser Cartel have released a new video for Ready To Go , from their recently released album Secret Transit . The video was directed by by Matt Kaiser, and made possible by the fans of Kaiser Cartel through the use of Pledge Music (the internet is pretty rad). Well, the family shoal is spread far and wide this Friday 13th, with me and the two youngest visiting friends in Switzerland, and MM plus the eldest in the more tropical climes of Morocco looking for wildlife, mainly of the scaly kind. I find August quite a strange month, and possibly one of my least favourites, aside from the welcome family time. (I know there's January to consider, but I quite like cold, sunny winter's days). Family, friends and acquaintances off travelling at different times, a strong sense of disassociation from the usual course of life, and the [...]

I can't play an instrument to save my life. Not the guitar or a flute. Not the drums or a harmonica. Maybe a tambourine. Maybe . Which is a shame really, because I love music so much and would love to make music of my own. If I could play a lick (or sing and not make people cover their ears), I'd want to be in a band like KaiserCartel . I'd like to be paired up with someone that when put together, we became one. I've written about them before ( here , here , and [...]

Photography by Me! WHEEE! Okay kiddos, I'm not going to lie... This mixtape was built in a day. It was not curated over a week, it was only test driven once, but that's kinda the point. It's now, for me, now for you, and now for now. Most of these are Oh Teners, some are just Oh Teners To Me (09? 08? whatever). Either way, it's been a short, fast, & furious week of catching up & getting it going, and now, wrapping it up. So. With that in [...]

Video: Kaiser Cartel "Favorite Song"
Hello dear readers! Em here. I've been absent from the blog for a while - I was in the beautiful country of Peru! But I'm back now, and I'm very pleased to have a review of my favorite Brooklyn due KaiserCartel's new album to share with you for my comeback. For those of you familiar with KaiserCartel, you will probably be a bit surprised by their new self-released album, Secret Transit, which
Not many indie - cred performers can talk about their love of "catchy pop songs" or declare that their goal is "to try to reach every person intimately through our music" without the slightest hint of irony. But it's just that disarming sincerity and refreshing directness of Courtney Kaiser and Benjamin Cartel that makes their impeccable smart-pop songs such an unmitigated treat. New sophomore album Secret Transit (June 15, Daniel) is a slightly more polished and experimental extension of the duo's 2008 debut March Forth [...]

Kaiser Cartel - Ready To Go "Courtney Kaiser and Benjamin Cartel began writing songs together in 2004, creating a musical partnership crafting luscious harmonies and infectious melodies. Prior to forming Kaiser Cartel, Courtney toured as a back up singer for John Mellencamp and both of their desires for creative variability currently finds Benjamin additionally fronting his self-titled side project band and Courtney occasionally moonlighting for Sean Lennon's band as well as lending her vocals to choral arrangements on [...]
Brace yourselves for Secret Transit. It'll see daylight on 6/8. Visit Kaiser Cartel on Facebook. MP3: Kaiser Cartel - Ready To Go
I was really taken with the beautiful pop of Kaiser Cartel's 2008 debut March Forth. Their intimate performance at Canadian Music Week 2009 sealed the deal. Now the band has announced that they're returning on June 8th with the new record Secret Transit. The recording of the album was aided by donations from fans. Get yourself a taste with a download of the new track "Ready To Go". Kaiser
Tuesday evening I popped over to the Living Room to catch my favorite Brooklyn duo, KaiserCartel, who I haven't seen in way too long. They played mostly stuff off their upcoming new album, Secret Transit, due out in June. The album sounds like it's going to be a little bit of a departure from KaiserCartel's usual quiet, calm sound - almost every song they played at the concert was totally rockin'

Every year, we listen to mp3's of every band scheduled to appear at SXSW. We then present you with an A to Z preview of the bands that we think should earn your attention. I would say having your own `signature edition` guitar certainly confirms an already legendary status most of today`s artists could merely dream off. Roy Orbison`s 1962 Epiphone 12-string is as iconic to his memory as those trademark dark shades, Orbison used his original Epiphone acoustic to write and perform many of his most well-known songs including perhaps his biggest hit, `Oh, Pretty Woman`. Although a stunning limited-edition piece of kit the U.S retail price runs just over $1300, the combination of fine materials and build quality make it a valuable purchase. Looking forward to Gibson/Epiphone`s unit price here in the [...]

The 2010 South By Southwest Festival schedule was posted this week and it's huge! Over 1,800 bands will be converging on Austin's downtown area from March 17th until the wee hours of the morning of March 21st. The schedule is available on the SXSW web site here , but be prepared to spend a considerable amount of time scrolling through all the shows. We spent some time reviewing it this week and compiled a list of unusual band names. We have no idea what most of them sound like, [...]
