If you've heard one thing about Kaki King , it's probably that her unique style of playing guitar landed her on Rolling Stone's list of "New Guitar Gods" back in 2006. But if you haven’t seen her perform live, you probably don’t know that she has an equally enthralling stage presence, laced with witty anecdotes and just enough cursing to keep things interesting. On the last night of her Retrospective Tour, the Atlanta-bred guitarist performed to a small but eager crowd Monday night at the Howard Theatre . Celebrating 10 years since the [...]

EVERY year I, my like most music writers both professional and amateur, bust an absolute gut to compile an Albums of the Year shortlist. Mine can be found here. However, with the best will in the world, no one person's perspective on the past 12 months can be all-encompassing - some of the best music will have been overlooked for one reason or another. Some will have been really low key or cult like Samuel Jackson Five's awesome LP, some will have been released too late to make an impression on a list, such as Gallops and [...]

Kaki King would never refer to herself as a guitar god. In fact, she considers herself a lifelong guitar student as she is always challenging herself to play something new and different on the guitar. Yet, that was how she was labeled when she first began her musical career. It's a term that certainly makes some sense, at least as far as her playing ability, when you see her perform her meticulous and percussive overhand-style techniques on her acoustic guitar. And you might [...]

We've got the premiere of "Rooftop," the first track to be released off the album which you can stream below, where you can also check out the LP artwork and tracklist. Ba Da Bing used to be home to Beirut who Lady Lamb has opened for . [...]

Photo credit: Matthew Saville I want to start off by welcoming back this feature to The Wild Honey Pie. It's been over three weeks since I've been able to post our suggested shows, and for that, I apologize. Fuck you Superstorm Sandy. Anyways, this week is stacked with great concerts across Manhattan and Brooklyn. Unfortunately, the subways still aren't running at full capacity so it might be tough for people to get to Williamsburg. But then again, that might actually be a good thing. Take that as you will. Don't miss Tame Impala [...]

Kaki King: Glow - Having released four subsequent studio albums already, Kaki King has taken on new approach to her completely instrumental album, Glow . A collection of twelve cinematic soundscapes in which she highlights string arrangements and harmony. The largest difference in this approach is how she has given up the focal points of her usual intertwining melodic ideas in order to give more room to build lush soundscapes over the course of the album. However, there are definitely many elements that are unique to King’s style. The album is saturated with [...]
Hey, it's Monday: ► Nicki Bluhm & the Gramblers visit the Troubadour behind their 2011 album "Driftwood," and although as a rule we don't post live videos here, we thought their cover of Hall & Oates' "I Can Go for That," recorded in their tour van, was pretty nifty. ► Kaki King headlines the El Rey Theatre behind her new album "Glow." ► Mika does another night at the Fonda Theatre, supported by The Dolls: Mia Moretti & Caitlin Moe. ► Mia Doi Todd and [...]
