![New Editions Of Pop Chestnuts Remind Us Yet Again Why New Edition Was So Popular In The First Place [Listening Station]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1362356_lg.jpg)
Continuing Cover Song Wednesday Morning, here's a stream of the latest Guilt By Association compilation, in which indie bands try to show that they have some sort of pop sensibility through the power of performing popular tunes. As you may expect, the results are a bit hit or miss (also: I still am wary of the idea of a "guilty pleasure," because it's all tied up in Catholic indoctrination that I've been trying to get over for years and years), but Frightened Rabbit's version of N-Trance's UK dance hit "Set You Free" is transformative and very [...]
Various Artists Guilt By Association Vol. 2 / Engine Room Recordings / BUY While we here at the Rind feel pretty firmly that one need not feel guilty for liking cheesy pop songs (seriously, you should see some of our playlists), the idea behind this second volume of covers from Engine Room is a great one [...]

I thought I might have been the only one at Sunday night's Mountain Goats show more excited and amped for Kaki King 's opening set, but I was surprised to see a few others were wearing the same hat. She is every bit as good as I've read in magazine praise-pieces and heard from Dave Grohl 's sound bytes. (Yes, he actually has been quoted to have said "There are some guitar players that are good and there are some guitar players that are really fucking good. And then there's Kaki King." ) Man, she owns more guitars [...]

I didn't get into The Mountain Goats until about two years ago. In fact, I used to hate them. John Darnielle 's voice would grate on me. My friends flocked to his set at the Pitchfork Music Festival three years ago, so I was forced to watch it, not really understanding what the big deal about him was. But then I heard "Palmcorder Yajna" in my friend's car. This song single-handedly opened me up to what The Mountain Goats were all about: simple pop songs with fantastic lyrics. I had to see him live. [...]

picture My reason to get down to New York has finally come in the form of a Kaki King & Mountain Goats tour getting there around the 8th of November. Good god, anything anyone can say about Kaki King is just completely insufficient to how incredible she really is, and I have to say that The Mountain Goats are also pretty far up there as well. This collaboration is extraordinary, really. It took me a few listens of the six song Black Pear Tree Ep, to finally get it, and then, "this is amazing" [...]
So we all know John Darnielle as that vocally-challenged, lyrically-brilliant one man show known as THE MOUNTAIN GOATS , but how many of us have taken the time to look into KOTTKE -esque, percussive guitarist KAKI KING ? Luckily for me, in my short time as a classical guitar major (believe me, there's no career in that, you'd also drop out), I was exposed to Ms. King's music in late-2004 ( Legs to Make Us Longer , to be precise. Go. Check it out. It's grand.). Knowing what I do about both the Mountain Goats and Kaki [...]
(Ed's Note: Not much coming through the pipeline this week so I thought I'd do a special edition of some tour EP's I've recently culled together. Hope you enjoy!) Who: The Mountain Goats & Kaki King Title: Black Pear Tree Release Date: available on tour & eMusic Label: Cadmean Dawn Thoughts: For some time John Darnielle has admitted to a loving adoration of Kaki King's music, so to take that

The middle of fall, nothing like it. It is also a huge weekend for shows in the area. Quite a few big names are rolling through the area and pulling multiple city stops. Here's what to check out. The Pacific northwest has produce numerous indie acts. One of the biggest, The Decemberists are playing two shows this weekend with fellow Portlanders Loch Lomond . You can catch them at the Electric Factory Friday and Rams Head Live in Baltimore Saturday. mp3: The Decemberists - [...]
by misky I used to pay rent for a room in Kaki King 's old apartment at the Mckibbon Lofts in Bushwick. She was in Europe touring so it was me, a dangerously quiet tatto0 artist, an effeminate actor dude prone to emotional outbursts, a tall Jewish graduate student guy who looked like Weird Al, and an untrained pitbull puppy. Long story short, we all left a month before the lease was up when the tattoo artist almost stabbed the grad student in the chest at 5 AM one [...]

Monday: Nonhorse @ Cake Shop 8pm $7 There isn't much going on this Monday evening, but Nonhorse seem to have a pretty interesting reputation behind them and should be something to enjoy in some way. Apparently their debut album is spliced together out of pieces of old cassette tapes and at a recent show they burned incense and cut onions to add smells to the sounds of their music. Not sure if
One girl in particular became so incredibly ecstatic she whirled around and made out with a young lady behind her. It was rad to see someone experience music so completely they lose their minds for a moment. read more

The Mountain Goats return to the Bay Area once again for two shows in San Francisco - Thursday at The Independent and Friday at The Fillmore , both with Kaki King (NY). The amazingly prolific and talented John Darnielle was kind enough to do an interview with our own Adrian Bischoff this year during Noise Pop. It's no surprise that since then, he has released a new EP, entitled Satanic Messiah , that can be downloaded online (he's counting on [...]
Word (via a series of text messages on my phone last night and my keen intuition) has it that the Mountain Goats show at Neumo's was a blast last night. read more

There's a scene in Elf where Will Ferrell's character, as naive and untainted by the world as he is, falls for Zooey Deschanel's shopgirl character. He stretches out his arms wide and yells, " I'm in LOVE! And I don't care who knows it!! " As I stood four feet from John Darnielle and his rotating crew of Mountain Goats at a sold-out show at the Bluebird on Friday night, I found myself thinking the same thing, with almost that same embarrassingly unabashed fervor. [...]

A busy test-filled week, a car that wouldn't start, the weather getting cold and still being tired from a show the night before almost deterred me from going to this gem of a concert. But I toughed it out and ended up having a phenomenal time checking out lo-fi 90s act The Mountain Goats and guitar legend Kaki King . I must admit that I mostly wanted to go to this show to check out opener Kaki King. I also must admit that I jumped on her bandwagon after learning about her creative [...]
