by teepoo Kalle Mattson was probably my most anticipated performance of the entire CMW and he didn't disappoint. He played old music (included the infamous Thick as Thieves ) and some new songs from the upcoming EP Lives in Between . He even busted out the harmonica! They had a red vinyl version of Anchors on sale at the show and I seriously regret forgetting to pick one up. Kalle Mattson- Waterfalls Gallery

Next I met up with Kalle Mattson for a chat! Me and Kalle Mattson T: What was it like to have Thick as Thieves go viral on Vimeo? KM: We had actually made the video with the intention of going viral so I think it did what we wanted. Vimeo's also the hipster more artsy YouTube, so it's pretty cool we made it up there. T: Who's idea [...]

by teepoo Kalle Mattson's Anchors was probably the most underrated album last year until the video for Thick as Thieves went viral. Now he's back with another release Lives in Between EP which will be out March 1st, 2012 . Here's a new track Water Falls highlighting Kalle's unique style of experimental folk. The background vocals sound at first like they shouldn't fit, but as you listen on, it becomes an integral part of creating some really [...]

Lately, it's been really hard for me to move. My knees have developed a mind of their own, and they're telling the rest of my body that they've thrown in the towel and are giving up on flexibility. Getting in and out of bed, in and out of the shower, and up and down the stairs of my house requires a significant amount of mental planning and fortitude to make up for the lack of physical strength in my legs. It's enough to make me want to just stay in bed and not get up at all. Then, [...]

I know we're only into the first week of December, but you know how nutty the holidays can get, what with all the merry-making and the eggnog and the various delicious liquors that go in the eggnog, so who knows if we'll get another Video Hits posted this year. But I have to say, if this is indeed it for the year, it's a great one to go out on. For example, we have what many people are already calling the best video of the year: Kalle Matson's Thick As Thieves . As [...]
Outstanding Sault Ste Marie/Ottawa band Kalle Mattson have released a really cool video for their track "Thick As Thieves" from their sophomore album Anchors . Watch it here: To celebrate the success of the video, the band are giving away the entire album for free for a limited time. Oh hey, look, that album was #3 on my list of Best Canadian Albums of 2011 that I posted earlier today! All the more reason to go get it here . [...]

Anyone who knows me, I mean really knows me, knows I'm more of a Scrooge than Santa at this time of year. It's not something I'm proud of, but I well aware that the holidays can bring out the worst in me. That's why this year, I'm trying to bring about some inner cheer by spreading some outer love to all QBiM faithful readers. It's been a pretty good year 'round QBiM, don't you think? I have a lot to be happy and proud about (and I am), and I think that I can carry some [...]
by teepoo Kalle Mattson - Thick As Thieves (Official Video) from Kevin Parry on Vimeo . Hey look on Vimeo front page right now! Canada's own Kalle Mattson has made it on the Videos We Like List awesome. It's an adorable history of the world told through arts and crafts.
Discovered this incredible stop-motion arts and crafts history of the world music video last night while browsing on Vimeo . The video is directed by Kevin Parry and it's for the song "Thick As Thieves" by Kalle Mattson .

Maybe you missed it earlier this year in the deluge of music that came out in March and April, but Kalle Mattson 's sophomore LP, Anchors , has become one of my go-to records of 2011. The young band from Sault Ste. Marie that started out as a solo project for songwriter Kalle Wainio has developed some very impressive chops in the two years since their debut, Whisper Bee , was first released, and things just keep getting better and better. Yesterday, Parliament of Trees (who signed Kalle Mattson [...]
Great Sault Ste Marie/Ottawa folk/rock band Kalle Mattson are releasing a new single on November 8th. These songs had their origins in the same sessions that produced the Anchors album, which looks like a good bet to be on my top 10 albums of 2011 list. Have a listen now:
The Shore/Palm Sunday 7" by Kalle Mattson
Kalle Mattson play The Boat in Toronto on November 21th.

by teepoo Kalle Mattson is a 4 piece group from Sault St. Marie, Ontario. They've grown from a pretty simple folk band to more of a indie-rock type deal and was a rave at CMW. They just released their second album Anchors last week. Here's a track titled Thick As Thieves , a catchy indie-rock tune with very folk sounding roots. I've been thinking a lot about how I would describe Anchors , the new album from Sault Ste. Marie ON's Kalle Mattson , without repeating what I've already said about them in previous posts . In terms of the album, there's much to celebrate; Anchors is a bright, accomplished album that showcases vocalist/guitarist Kalle Wainio's burgeoning songwriting talent. "Thick As Thieves" and my personal favourite, "Good Morning, Goodnight" are absolutely effervescent pop moments that spill forth from your speakers like liquid gold. That the band can balance these performance with a [...]

Yesterday was the perfect storm of awesomeness to issue Spring into Halifax. As the sun made a cameo appearance, thousands of people deliberated painfully with a spring jacket in one hand and a winter coat int he other. Then, like the mother in The Good Son , we let our winter jacket fall to an early death, turned and embraced thinner and less intrusive outwear. Throw in the drunken douchebaggery of St. Paddy's Day and the opening tip of the greatest (non-World Cup) tournament in the world and someone better call Nelly as it is indeed getting hot in [...]
Day 2 of Canadian Music Week means it's time for me to ramp things up after a leisurely opening night. The first stop of the night was The Piston to catch Montreal's Domestic Crisis Group, a show that was rescheduled at the last minute. I believe this was the duo's first appearance in Toronto, and hopefully not their last. Showcasing their self-described "melancountry" they reinforced what I
