First, a note: please excuse my tardiness. I've neglected my blogging duties of late for no reasons other than general laziness and the love-hate relationship my laptop and I share. And Disneyland. Sorry. I've discovered a lot of bands when they opened for a band that I loved. Last Saturday at the Knitting Factory, however, I discovered a headlining band that a band I love opened for. Well that's not entirely true, as I knew about the Smoking Popes going in. What I knew is that they were a decent post-punk-type band [...]
Remember how earlier this week I mentioned Michael Stanley , who went to my high school and is still a pretty big deal in Cleveland? A reader tipped me off that apparently he's playing KHITS 96's annual Rock 'N' CholesteRoll show at Jefferson Barracks on Saturday, October 4. Also on the bill is Kansas, Pat and Danny Liston from Mama's Pride and the KHITS All-Star Band. All of the ticket/show info is HERE . That same reader tipped me off that Stanley was a KSHE staple back in the day, which aligns well with that station's Midwest sensibilities. [...]

[Local! Music! Friday!] Tell me...what is this Local Music Fridays? I had the pleasure of playing a really lovely show with these guys last week at Goodbye Blue Monday . We did an album trade after the show and this song has been breaking my heart ever since. Everynight.mp3 AP and his sister band [...]
I've got to remember that when I inevitably get frustrated by the conservative politics of my new home state it could be so so much worse : A prosperous hamlet of 6,300, Sioux Center is home to 17 churches, 13 of them with the word "Reformed" in their name, a sign of a strong evangelical presence. In 2004, 16,000 people in the county voted, 14,000 of them for Bush. I've driven through Iowa twice in the past three days and but I missed Sioux Center both times...

Kansas Cityyyyy. We're officially half way across the country. I <3 The Midwest Merch Signings so serious Storms came in and knocked the power out. We had just gotten to a hotel to shower, so it made things very interesting. Jen got immersed in the Hotel reading area. A Day to Remember kept the pits moving [...]
The Song Remains The Same - The Flaming Lips 5.23.08 - Wakarusa Festival - Lawrence Kansas
We were going to make a second Cougar Muxtape and then realized the Happy Gilmore soundtrack is a Cougar muxtape, only available in the popular compact disc format. So crack open the cold gold with Kansas, move things onto the chaise lounge with Exile (pretty intense video below), then close the deal with Lionel. [...]
The nonstop reruns of My Super Sweet 16 and The Hills has made one thing clear in 2007 - rich girls have taken over MTV. I'm not sure if this is metaphorically speaking or if an actual group of armed debutantes has hijacked the station's control room. Either way, the ...
Being as how I?m swamped with stuff to do tonight, including a midnight-4am (central standard time, only on KJHK 90.7FM) free form set, getting money to the bank, grabbing coffee, setting up a new turntable, and possibly watching some Law & Order? here?s a random list. Reviews and quality material ...

We would like to introduce you to White Flight . When we kicked back, threw on the headphones, and listened to this artist we thought "Medley of Beck-esque drops striped with hop-hop sizzle." What did you think? Use a tag or comment to share your thoughts with everyone. Enjoy. Genre: Rock-Pop-Folk Label: Range Life Records Source: My Old Kentucky Blog [...]

This is a free crash course in music education from the last 40 years, courtesy of Gregg Gillis, aka Girl Talk . It goes by really, really fast. My blogger pal Bruce (of Some Velvet Blog hotness fame) came up with an idea to do a massive joint post of all the songs from the ADD-inducing, mile-a-minute mashup disc Night Ripper ( previous post ), which uses over a hundred original songs to make the 42 minutes of party goodness on this album. We both [...]

Of all the indie labels out there, a Merge is one of the best. So when they have a new artist to promote, I find it easier to sit down and give it a proper listen. And Ill admit, most of the time I dont regret that time at all. Merge has already pushed new releases from the likes of Camera Obscura, Spoon, and Portastic this year, with M Wards new gem on the way soon. The newest Merge artist to catch my ear is White Whale. I think you will [...]

Just got word through the excellent new blog Heavy Metal Mouth that Merge is taking pre-orders for White Whales debut album (WWI). Preorder here , I don't imagine that you'll be disappointed. There's a couple good write-ups on the promo materials and pre-released tracks up on Good Hodgkins and My Old Kentucky Blog (although Dodge doesn't answer the question: Who would win in a fight? Superman or a White Whale? That was kind of disappointing.) All in all, I'm pretty excited about this album. Here [...]
