Directed by Shawn Tegtmeier Phantods is keeping it quirky and catchy on "Creature" ( Donewaiting staffers are yet to discuss it ) which they just so happen to be having a cd release for on Saturday, November 13 at Skully's with The Receiver and Karate Coyote . (Quick aside, Karate Coyote always make me think of Hong Kong Phooey , might be a better band name too) Phantods [...]
Hollows (photo by rodger ruzanka) Happy Independence Day weekend everyone! There might not be any fireworks until Sunday this year, but there's plenty of explosive music happenings going on around town. This weekend we're letting you know about Hollows at Lincoln Hall , The Streets On Fire at the Double Door , Tiny Vipers at the Empty Bottle , Obbityfest 2010 and more! Let's get to it, shall we? [...]
It's been three weeks since our friend Alix Reese was tragically shot in the neck while driving on the east side. Multiple fundraisers have taken place and the support for them has been and continues to be incredible. In yet another selfless effort to raise money for medical expenses, Jacob Wooten has gathered the help of 20 local businesses and musicians to release a special limited-edition record for Alix. The album features 15 different singles, including unreleased tracks by Phantods, Winter Makes Sailors and Wing and Tusk. Only 500 copies will be made, and 100% of [...]
A little bit of everything Saturday night at Skully's as 3 locals ( Blastronauts , The George Elliot Underground , Karate Coyote ) and an out-of-towner (Athens' Manor Animals ) keep the rock rolling (as opposed to the Rick Rolling ) during this Memorial Day weekend. Not really sure of the genesis of this show but it could be the end of a weeklong celebration for The George Elliot Underground who released a new EP, Summer of Weird , earlier this [...]
MP3: ICURN4A187 I'm much more enthused about the second half of Karate Coyote 's new (and first full-length) album, Inner Animals , but the above track (#2 of 12) helps redeem Side A for me. It's got all those things you love about Karate Coyote, if you love Karate Coyote: hoots and hollers, ohhs and ahhs, background shouts of "Hey!", creative vocal lines courtesy of Sam Corlett, little bits of weird/throwback lead guitar that doesn't seem like it should fit but does. CD release show in Columbus this Friday (3/26) [...]
Evan Dando (Credit: Artist's Myspace) Gifts are coming to the IA area a few days early. A great lineup of shows this weekend. Quite a few big names are rolling through the area to make your holidays bright. The fighting Gallagher brothers have somehow not killed each other yet and put out a new album, Dig Out Your Soul , in October. Now Oasis is touring the states, hitting the Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden Friday and the Patriot Center at GMU Saturday. Will it be a great show or a fist fight [...]
Photo By Zach Inscho We've had a lot of luck with Coyote bands this year. First, Denver's Young Coyotes sent us their demos over the summer and quickly became one of our favorites. Now, we stumbled upon Karate Coyote . Karate Coyote formed last year and call Columbus, OH home. Trying to describe them can be a bit difficult, as they can pretty much morph into any genre with ease. Imagine mixing together elements of chaotic indie dance, post-hardcore and melancholy moments that build into a wall of sound like Radiohead is famous [...]
MP3 : Move Yourself by Karate Coyote One of the newer bands in Columbus that I've been excited to watch grow has been Karate Coyote . They've finally released their first EP, a great mixture of Los Campesinos energy and Velocity Girl throwback pop of the mid 90s. I caught the band live over the summer as part of the outdoor Haiku benefit. I thought they were a lot of fun live, and you can hear the good vibes come out in the recorded music, too. They've got a bunch of [...]

Video: Karate Coyote – "ICU2RN4A187″ (vote for it)
Click here to view the embedded video. MP3: ICU2RN4A187 So apparently there's this Michael Cera movie coming out called Scott Pilgrim vs. the World . (I wonder if he plays someone aloof and awkward?) In hopes of drumming of publicity for the film (obviously it's working...) there's a contest going on called "Indie Rock vs. the World" with a bracket full of bands battling each other. Round 1 is over, now it's round 2, and Columbus's Karate Coyote is one of 8 bands [...]

Lohio, Karate Coyote, The Randys - Rumba
In the middle of Lohio 's set at the Rumba Café on Friday night, lead singer Greg Dutton led the band through a song called "You've Got a Lot of Nerve," during which he repeated this sentiment several times: "I can tell you've got some things to learn." Each time I heard it, I couldn't help thinking of that adage about the pot and the kettle. Lohio has much to learn. The Pittsburgh fivesome is pleasant enough on record, merging the squeaky-clean indie pop of bands like Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin with intermittent doses of [...]

Local roundup
Reviews of recent (and not so recent) Columbus albums: The Lost Revival - Homemade Confetti Let me first say that I'm way late on this one. The Lost Revival released its debut, Homemade Confetti , earlier this year, but it somehow passed me by. That band wasn't hiding under a rock, either. The seven-piece multi-instrumentalists have become known for their intense live shows, earning them a spot opening CD101's Summerfest this year. Homemade Confetti , which was apparently recorded in one weekend, doesn't [...]
