Whether it's Radiohead, Justice or Kanye West, lots of artists have used children's choirs in their music and it can have the effect of sounding uplifting, cute, anthemic or just plain creepy. The Langley Schools Music Project album, Innocence & Despair showed that's even possible to maintain the concept for an entire album and still be fascinating. Sigur Rós are the latest to use a children's choir in their gorgeous track "Varúð" (translation: "Caution") from their upcoming sixth LP, Valtari , and it inspired me to make a mix of some of my [...]

There's something about a song with whistling that never fails to captivate. From "(Sitting At The) Dock of the Bay" to "Me and Julio Down By The Schoolyard" to basically any song by Andrew Bird (the indisputable whistle king), it always adds a little something that makes the track burrow deep inside your brain. One recent example is Foster The People's "Pumped Up Kicks", which turned a catchy melody and even catchier whistle into a massive crossover hit (it even inspired a cover version by Weezer ). This is nothing new of course, if you look at [...]

Karen O And The Kids - Hideaway All the people were elated too on the small farms around the lakes for weeks after Fraser Woods had tried to hang himself from a branch of an apple tree in his garden, the unconcealed excitement in their voices as they said, 'Isn't it terrible what happened to poor Fraser?' and the lust on their faces as they waited for their excitement to be mirrored. Words by John McGahern. [ Where the wild things are .]
Last week (AKA: The Best Week Ever! ), Kristin and I got ourselves a new little kitten, and per Logan’s suggestion, I’ve put together a short playlist to celebrate. It’s made up of a songs about cats, some explicitly, and others not so much. Like the Mountain Goats song, for example, is pretty impressionistic in its suggestion of a feline, with lines like “in your arms, I am a wild creature” and “white carpet thick with pet hair”; while both The Weakerthans tracks actually follow the heartbreaking story of Virtute the cat, one of the single saddest [...]
Photography: Buck Forester I didn't know about the film "Where The Wild Things Are", but more importantly about its soundtrack until now. Big mistake, as it turns out the person behind it is none other than Karen O of Yeah Yeah Yeahs , so it's certainly not the kind of OST that you listen to once and never touch again. 'Cause of so, I can only recommend making it yours if you have a few bucks to spend at iTunes . The story could end here, but I [...]

Legendary Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O has a very special place in my Cougar heart so when I found out she has taken on the Jackass theme tune I knew I was going to love it. Her version of 'If You’re Gonna Be Dumb, You Gotta Be Tough' sounds like it wouldnt be out [...]
Contrary to the title of this post we are not giving away Muffins with the characters from Where The Wild Things Are drawn in icing. Although, now that I think about it... We are however, thanks to our good friends at Filter, giving away a Where The Wild Things Are ...

The other day my wife and I had a discussion about why I haven't made her a mix in a long time. I figured, what better day than Valentines to put together some music to profess my undying love for the beautiful woman in my life. I hope she enjoys this as much as I enjoyed putting it together. C=T Valentine's Day Mix 2010 Patsy Cline-Thats How Much I Love You The Marvelettes-When You're Young And In Love Stevie Wonder-I Believe (When I Fall In Love) [...]
This week the nominations for the 82nd Academy Awards were handed out in L.A. in advance of the March 7th award show. With ten nominations for Best Picture this year and all but locked up races for the Best Acting awards it was difficult to be too upset with all the nominations. Every year it seems the Academy does a fairly piss poor job of recognizing the music in movies, opting to nominate every ridiculously happy Disney tune over the darker entries in movies that are a little more adult oriented. Why this is I suppose we'll never know but [...]

Sarah Jarosz is a fresh-faced young lady from the Texas hill country. At just 19, she's already had the opportunity to not only meet, but create a record with some of her contemporary heroes (although most nearly a generation ahead of her). Because her instrumental reputation precedes her (Sarah plays mandolin, banjo, guitar, and even a toy piano on her album), she was able to employ Tim O'Brien, Chris Thile, and Abigail Washburn as additional musicians/vocalists on her first record. Each of these bluegrass legends offered up a glowing foreword about Sarah, praising not only her playing, but [...]
The following reviews were written by Anthony Fantano, and requested by subscribers of his YouTube channel. The views expressed here are opinion, not fact. An opinion is a personal view or attitude. No reason to get upset if you have a differing personal view or attitude.1. Lost Boy- Taste Butter (6) Where some people hear annoying, I hear outgoing. I saw this movie with my dear friend, Lani when it was playing in the theaters and really enjoyed it. There were mixed reviews floating around and even I was skeptical that a children's picture-book with less than 50 pages could be made into a feature-length film. However, I have enjoyed Spike Jonze's work on many , many occasions and was impressed from what I saw in the trailers as far as costumes and design. Then I saw an interview where Jonze claimed that he tapped into [...]
Yeah Yeah Yeahs flirtation with synth-pop was one of the talking points of 2009. Seemingly everyone (with the possible exception of the Pope) praised the bands metamorphosis from angry art-rockers to dance floor conquerors. It is hard to disagree with this assessment as 'It's Blitz' is superb. The decision to sacrifice Nick Zinner's guitars in favour of a [...]

While I professed in my albums post that perhaps this wasn't the greatest year for albums, or at least it didn't have too many true classics, 2009 has been an incredible year for songs. I really had trouble culling this list down to only 100, which is definitely a lot of songs. Of course, when Spencer Krug's various bands take up over a dozen slots, it leaves little room for other things, but this was a really wonderful year. Even more shocking is the staggering list of great new albums expected out in 2010, but we'll save [...]

Pour moi c'est au fin fond de la campagne dans le brouillard! Je vois que tu nous a gâté pour Noël, la hotte déborde de cadeaux!
