Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive Frank Yang, Chromewaves ROUYN-NORANDA, QUEBEC - From California's Coachella to Chicago's Lollapalooza to Montreal's Osheaga , there's a certain formula for a successful North American summer music festival: lure every available A-list artist to a popular travel destination, pack the schedule with round-the-clock performances across multiple stages, get corporate sponsors to underwrite the expense, and pray that it doesn't rain. Given that it's [...]

Justin Broadbent In an age where many young bands seek to get on the expressway to your skull immediately after their first rehearsal - assuming they rehearse instead of just uploading jams to Soundcloud - you have to appreciate a band like The Wooden Sky . They've taken the time to hone their songcraft and live show since forming as Friday Morning's Regret in 2003, and with their 2009 sophomore full-length If I Don't Come Home You'll Know I'm Gone and its attendant endless touring regimen, have positioned themselves as [...]

Canadian indie rockers Karkwa are only playing three shows in the United States and a Wednesday night stop at Pittsburgh's Brillobox accompanies dates in Chicago and New York. Perhaps this is why it pays to have a great NHL team in the city. Thanks, Mario! Karkwa's fourth LP, Les Chemins de Verre (The Glass Pathways), won the prestigious Polaris Music Prize in Canada. The vocals are in French, which may be a deal breaker for some, but if you just appreciate good music and a great live show, check at Karkwa. Karkwa [...]

Wow it is already December! The first show of the month happened at Ottawa's Ritual Nightclub on December 1, 2011. Playing there was Karkwa , Parlovr and I Spell It With Nature . You can say it was Francophone night at Ritual. Kind of deja-vu considering Malajube played at Ritual on November 10, 2011. I still find it fascinating that Francophone music fans are very supportive to acts like Karkwa and Malajube . [...]

Frank Yang It seems a bit counter-intuitive to travel all the way to Iceland to see a bunch of Canadian bands, but then there's also something to be said about the sense of camaraderie one gets from hanging out with one's countrymen in such a foreign setting. So after finally getting to sample some of Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur's famous wares - those are hot dogs, by the by - and a bit of souvenir shopping, Saturday afternoon was largely spent at the Hressingarskálinn cafe where Canadian Blast had pitched a tent to showcase [...]

September 22, 2011 was a big day in Montreal and for Pop Montreal . Arcade Fire put on a free outdoor concert at Place des Festivals of Quartier des Spectacles where Montreal Jazz Festival is held. The result was 101,000 people came out to see Montreal's favorite band. It was more for the band to give them a big thank you to Montreal for supporting them all these years. Also to have a fun party celebration in the downtown area. [...]

With commemorative cups handed out at water stations and serious fans lining up at noon to get the best view, it was clear that the band's fellow Montrealers were [...]

I am very excited this week because I am going to be heading down to Montreal for Pop Montreal . This is their 10th year in existence. This year everyone is going to be talking about this "band" who will be doing a free outdoor show. So I will give you a list of who I might get to see from September 21st to 24th. *I will be missing out Sunday since I have to head back to Ottawa for this show .* Here is part I for Wednesday and Thursday. Frank Yang Executive summary of this post: Arcade Fires's third album The Suburbs did what everyone kind of expected and won the 2011 Polaris Music Prize last night, and with the $30,000 giant novelty cheque comes loads of praise and under-the-breath mutterings about how they don't deserve it, though that'd have happened no matter who won. If you're the sort of person who only looks at the scoreboard and pays no attention to the boxscores, then you're done here. If you want the blow-by-blow about how [...]
